E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Two new species of the genus Pseudokuzicus are described: Pseudokuzicus (Pseudokuzicus) trianglus sp. nov. and Pseudokuzicus (Pseudokuzicus) platynus sp. nov. from China. In addition, morphological structures, a distribution map for known species distributed in China and a key to the species are provided. All specimens are deposited in the Museum of Hebei University, Baoding, P. R. China. Key words: Meconematini, Pseudokuzicus, new species, China Introduction The genus Pseudokuzicus was proposed by Gorochov in 1993 with type species Xiphidiopsis pieli Tinkham, 1943. Chang et al (1998) described one new species Pseudokuzicus longidentatus Chang, Zheng & Wang from China; Gorochov (1998) reported another new species Pseudokuzicus tamdao from Vietnam. Shi et al (2007) reviewed the genus and described three new species, i.e. Pseudokuzicus (Similkuzicus) quadridentatus Shi, Mao & Chang, 2007, Pseudokuzicus (Pseudokuzicus) spinus Shi, Mao & Chang, 2007, and Pseudokuzicus (Pseudokuzicus) acinacus Shi, Mao & Chang, 2007 from China. Liu et al (2010) transferred Xiphidiopsis furcicauda Mu, He & Wang, 2000 into the genus Pseudokuzicus. The genus includes six species (Eades et al, 2014).

  • Singleton Molecular Species Delimitation Based on COI-5P
Zhou et al. BMC Evolutionary Biology (2019) 19:79 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12862-019-1404-5 RESEARCHARTICLE Open Access Singleton molecular species delimitation based on COI-5P barcode sequences revealed high cryptic/undescribed diversity for Chinese katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) Zhijun Zhou*, Huifang Guo, Li Han, Jinyan Chai, Xuting Che and Fuming Shi* Abstract Background: DNA barcoding has been developed as a useful tool for species discrimination. Several sequence- based species delimitation methods, such as Barcode Index Number (BIN), REfined Single Linkage (RESL), Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD), a Java program uses an explicit, determinate algorithm to define Molecular Operational Taxonomic Unit (jMOTU), Generalized Mixed Yule Coalescent (GMYC), and Bayesian implementation of the Poisson Tree Processes model (bPTP), were used. Our aim was to estimate Chinese katydid biodiversity using standard DNA barcode cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI-5P) sequences. Results: Detection of a barcoding gap by similarity-based analyses and clustering-base analyses indicated that 131 identified morphological species (morphospecies) were assigned to 196 BINs and were divided into four categories: (i) MATCH (83/131 = 64.89%), morphospecies were a perfect match between morphospecies and BINs (including 61 concordant BINs and 22 singleton BINs); (ii) MERGE (14/131 = 10.69%), morphospecies shared its unique BIN with other species; (iii) SPLIT (33/131 = 25.19%, when 22 singleton species were excluded, it rose to 33/109 = 30.28%), morphospecies were placed in more than one BIN; (iv) MIXTURE (4/131 = 5.34%), morphospecies showed a more complex partition involving both a merge and a split. Neighbor-joining (NJ) analyses showed that nearly all BINs and most morphospecies formed monophyletic cluster with little variation.

Introduction and Background on Proposed Action This biological assessment (BA) has been prepared by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to evaluate the potential effects on federally-listed threatened and endangered species and designated critical habitat from the movement of baled garbage and regulated (domestic) garbage (GRG) from the State of Hawaii for disposal at landfills in Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. Specifically, garbage is defined as urban (commercial and residential) solid waste from municipalities in Hawaii, excluding incinerator ash and collections of agricultural waste and yard waste. Regulated (domestic) garbage refers to articles generated in Hawaii that are restricted from movement to the continental United States under various quarantine regulations established to prevent the spread of plant pests (including insects, disease, and weeds) into areas where the pests are not prevalent.

E-mail: 1 [email protected]; 2rambo/[email protected] Abstract In this paper, one new genus, three new species are described: Alloxiphidiopsis gen. n., Alloxiphidiopsis cyclolamina sp. n., Alloxiphidiopsis /ongicauda sp. n. and Alloxiphidiopsis ova/is sp. n. (Meconematini). Two new combinations are pro posed: Alloxiphidiopsis emarginata (Tinkham, 1944) comb. n. and Alloxiphidiopsis irregularis (Bey-Bienko, 1962) comb. n. from Xiphidiopsis. A key to the species is given. Key words: Taxonomy, Meconematini, A/loxiphidiopsis, new species Introduction Meconematini is the largest tribe in Meconematinae, which was proposed by Burmeister (1838). 31 genera are presently recognised in this tribe, most of which are distributed in Asia. During the course of a revision of Chinese Meconematini, we discovered that the males of Xiphidiopsis emarginata Tinkham, Xiphidiopsis irregularis Bey-Bienko and three new species have highly modified 9th abdominal tergites, and the females of two species (the others are unknown) have denticulated ovipositors. These characters differ clearly from the other genera of Meconematini. Thus we think it is wiser to treat them as a single genus for the time being. The type specimens are deposited respectively in Shanghai Entomological Museum, Chinese Academy of Sci ences (SEM); Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IZCAS); Nankai University, Tianjing (NUT) and Bishop Museum, Hawaii (BMH). The type species is preserved in the Museum of Hebei University. Key words: Meconematini, Kuzicus, new species, China Introduction The genus Kuzicus was established by Gorochov (1993), and was divided into two subgenera: Kuzicus and Neokuzicus. The type species is Teratura suzukii Matsumura & Shiraki, 1908. He transferred Xiphidiopsis denticulatus Karny, 1926 and Xiphidiopsis cervicercus Tinkham, 1943 to the subgenus Kuzicus (Kuzicus), and described one new species, Kuzicus (Neokuzicus) uvarovi. Ingrisch & Shishodia (2000) erected another new subgenus Parakuzicus, and described two new species: Kuzicus (Parakuzicus) cervicus and Kuzicus (Parakuzicus) excavatus, and transferred Xiphidiopsis forficatus Bolívar, 1900 to the subgenus Kuzicus (Parakuzicus). Mao et al. (2009) reviewed the genus Kuzicus from China, and reported one new species, Kuzicus (Kuzicus) multifidous Mao & Shi, 2009. Up to now, the genus Kuzicus includes 3 subgenera and 13 species all over the world (Bolívar, 1900; Matsumura & Shiraki, 1908; Tinkham, 1943; Gorochov, 1993; Ingrisch & Shishodia, 1998; Ingrisch & Shishodia, 2000; Sänger & Helfert, 2004; Sänger & Helfert, 2006a, 2006b; Ingrisch, 2006; Mao et al., 2009).

  • Orthoptera Species Checklist of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve in the Zoological Reference Collection, Singapore
Gardens’ Bulletin Singapore 71(Suppl. 1):331-338. 2019 331 doi: 10.26492/gbs71(suppl.1).2019-13 Orthoptera species checklist of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve in the Zoological Reference Collection, Singapore M.K. Tan Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore, 14 Science Drive 4, 117543 Singapore [email protected] ABSTRACT. While work on Orthoptera in Singapore is not lacking, there is no species checklist for the species found within the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (BTNR). Here, a checklist of orthopterans in the reserve is given based on specimens deposited in the Zoological Reference Collection of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, Singapore. In total, 83 species, 30 from the suborder Caelifera (grasshoppers and relatives) and 53 from the suborder Ensifera (crickets, katydids, and relatives), are recorded from the reserve. Keywords. Crickets, diversity, grasshoppers, insects, katydids, richness Introduction There are more than 2000 species of grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids in Southeast Asia (Cigliano et al., 2018; Tan et al., 2017c). Collectively known as the Orthoptera, the grasshoppers belong to the monophyletic suborder Caelifera, whereas the crickets and katydids belong to the other monophyletic suborder Ensifera (Song et al., 2015). These insects include a very few species that are notorious pests (Willemse, 2001). However, owing to the richness in species and diversity of form, orthopterans provide more ecosystem services than might have been expected. They can function as potentially mutualistic pollinators (e.g., Tan & Tan, 2018), predators of other pest species, prey to charismatic species (e.g., Fung et al., 2018) and potential ecological indicators (e.g., Tan et al., 2017a).
