Monday 4: At home all day – writing &c. Tuesday 5: Dined at Barrett’s7 – very large party – played at Blindman’s Buff. Wednesday 68: [Holiday at the Bank, Exchequer, and South Sea House] Cowcher came and had a glass of wine – went there and had twelfth cake – rode with Dodson. 88 Esther Pope proprietor Crown and Thistle 89 This could be a reference to the biannual Visitation of the School by the Mayor and Principal Burgesses, as decreed by John Roysse in 1563. However, there is another Visitation mentioned on 9 August. 90 Coronation (King George IV 1821) 91 The School had a holiday when the Assizes met as they made use of either the schoolroom or the schoolyard. 92 Hewlett was declared insolvent in 1831, and again in 1839, this could be a reference to his own appearance in court for unpaid debts.
