The original re-housing and inventorying project was completed by the Library & Archives in 1988, and maintained the original order of the maps established by the Engineering Department. In addition to addressing the unique preservation issues of the East/West Maps, this re- housing project served several purposes: made maps easier to handle; and facilitated the creation of a new Microsoft Access database inventory with additional keyword indexing to identify proper names not brought out in the original indexing system which allowed only one alphabetical term to be indexed per map. Descriptions of maps for the numerical inventory were taken directly from the original 1988 inventory and verified against the maps during the re-housing project. During re-housing, several maps were found to be missing and were so identified in the inventory, and several un-catalogued maps were discovered and added to the inventory. The maps were originally housed in oversize map books with items glued front and back to heavy stock cardboard pages. The bindings were removed in the initial re-housing, but the maps were left adhered to the cardboard. Over the years, storage and retrieval of the maps on these acidic pages had caused increased deterioration and damage to the individual maps including tears, discolorations, transference of ink and graphite, and unnecessary wear and tear. In an effort to preserve the maps and halt the damage this record series was re-housed in 2009. All maps whose adhesive had disintegrated enough to allow safe removal from the cardboard were separated. Those that could not be removed were left alone but re-housed in individual folders so they would no longer be touching. All maps were re-housed in legal sized folders and document cases or oversized folders in flat file map drawers, based on their map size. Prepared by L. Spracher and J.
