Začala tak třiadvacetiletá historie mimořádně hodnotného duchovního časopisu, ve které bylo vydáno 22 roč- níků; historie, která nebyla přervána válečnou vřavou, byla však zadušena ideologickou nenávistí. Vedoucím a odpovědným redaktorem byl po celou dobu existence časo- pisu (tzn. do 12. čísla roku 1948) SILVESTR MARIA BRAITO, kněz, domini- kán, doktor teologie, učitel, myslitel, mimořádná duchovní osobnost. Pře- devším a jednoznačně jeho přičiněním byl konstituován list, který měl přesně stanovený náročný cíl, který dokázal k sobě přitáhnout řadu vý- znamných osobností českého i evropského křesťanského života a který oslovoval řadu lidí toužících po hlubokých duchovních hodnotách. Ze sto- vek příspěvků, které sám BRAITO pro časopis napsal, je patrné jeho niterné přesvědčení o smyslu práce, která byla pro něj zcela přirozeným výrazem jeho křesťanského přesvědčení. Myšlenky o vytvoření časopisu pro duchovní život si BRAITO přináší ze svého tříletého teologického studia v belgickém Saulchioru, kde získal lek- torát teologie. Po svém návratu do Čech v roce 1925 se snaží uskutečnit připravenou koncepci, která má být podle něj snahou o obnovení duchov- ního života v Čechách. Zamýšlená revue chtěla být také naplněním BRAI- TOVÝCH snah předložit českému čtenáři časopis analogický významnému francouzskému měsíčníku dominikána BERNADOTA La vie spirituelle, který se neorientoval jen na odbornou teologickou obec. BRAITO však chtěl širší čtenářský okruh oslovat kvalitním textem s vysokou teologickou i kulturní úrovní. Projekt Hlubiny tak vznikal zajímavou oscilací mezi tradičním od- borným Časopisem katolického duchovenstva a mezi řadou náboženských časopisů pro laiky. Hlubina byla v podstatě profilována jako revue o du- chovním životě pro katolickou inteligenci. Pro tento projekt získal jak teh- dejšího převora olomouckého kláštera EMILIÁNA SOUKUPA, tak tehdejšího dominikánského provinciála VÁCLAVA BUBENÍKA. Definitivní název časo- pisu vzešel z návrhu EMILIÁNA SOUKUPA. První vytištěné číslo bylo k dis- pozici na březnový svátek sv. TOMÁŠE AKVINSKÉHO roku 1926 v nákladu 2000 kusů; pro velký ohlas se muselo toto číslo ještě dotisknout. Redakce a administrace sídlila trvale na olomoucké adrese dominikán- ského kláštera v ulici Slovenská 14, telefon Olomouc 626. Od sedmého 3 čísla sedmého ročníku (1932) se objevuje v souvislosti s BRAITOVÝM pů- sobením v Praze (kde po smrti ODILO POSPÍŠILA v letech 1933–1934 půso- bil jako řádový ředitel misií) i pražská adresa redakce (Praha I., Husova 8, telefon 25424; nepřetržitě do konce devátého ročníku), sekretariát a admi- nistrace zůstávají v Olomouci. V době válečné byla uváděna adresa redakce a administrace v Bernardinské ulici č. 14. Z důvodu intenzivní publikační a vydavatelské činnosti se v olomouckém klášteře staví v roce 1934 míst- nost pro expedici knih a časopisů a rozšiřuje se místnost pro redakční kni- hovnu. Expedují se zde vedle Hlubiny i měsíčník Růže dominikánská, čtvrtletník Filosofická revue a desítky knih dominikánské edice Krystal. V letech 1928–1930 absolvoval BRAITO podle řádových předpisů o vzdělávání profesorů řádu dominikánů v Římě komplementární studia, která zakončuje na papežském institutu Angelicum doktorátem teologie. V době jeho římského studijního pobytu (Via San Vitale 15) působil jako redakční sekretář v Olomouci dominikán AUGUSTIN SCHERZER (v tiráži by- lo jeho jméno uváděno do třetího čísla z roku 1930); BRAITO však nadále zůstává redaktorem a řídí redakci z Říma. Jak se uvádí v Redakční hovorně osmého čísla z roku 1928, „každou druhou sobotu bude vyměněna pošta mezi Římem a Olomoucí“ (tj. vzkaz pro ty, kterým by poštovné na dopis BRAITOVI do Říma činilo potíže; dopis tak mohl být zaslán do olomouckého kláštera, odkud byl dále spolu s ostatními dopisy odeslán do Říma na BRAITOVU adresu). Za redakci zodpovídal FRANTIŠEK MACURA. Od prvního čísla sedmého ročníku (1932) je v tiráži uváděn jako zastu- pující redaktor v Olomouci JOSEF PAPICA; od devátého ročníku (1934) je vedle BRAITA v tiráži uváděn jako spoluredaktor dr. REGINALD M. DACÍK a dále JOSEF PAPICA jako sekretář (do konce devátého ročníku). * * * Během prvních tří let revue se vykrystalizovala základní oddílová struk- tura, která byla jen minimálně obměňována. Těžištěm úvodu byl vždy du- chovní kurz, který BRAITO zpočátku (ve druhém a třetím ročníku) psal s jinými autory (ponejvíce s EMILIÁNEM SOUKUPEM), potom již výhradně sám. Domnívám se, že právě tyto seriálové kurzy byly nejnosnější částí Hlubiny i profilovou záležitostí nejvýznamnější osobnosti revue – SIL- VESTRA M. BRAITA. Od druhého do devatenáctého ročníku revue bylo uve- řejněno 16 tematických kurzů, ve kterých BRAITO publikoval 151 jednotli- vých pokračování. Na základě vnitřní struktury i celkové dynamiky těchto seriálů můžeme velmi plasticky vidět úsilí, jehož východisko spočívalo ve 4 formulování základů duchovního života a jehož směrování sledovalo ra- zantní a zásadní prohloubení duchovního rozměru lidství, které nemá – v případě nastoupení nabízené cesty – alternativu. Předmětově jsou zde řeše- na všechna klíčová témata křesťanství, resp. římského katolicismu. Úvodní kurzy jsou věnovány celkovému vpravení do problematiky, pozdější části jsou již skutečnou hlubinnou projekcí křesťanského postoje. V prvních čás- tech BRAITO nezastírá, že chce čtenáře nejdříve připravit na závažnější té- mata, která časem skutečně nastiňována byla. Rozvinování problémů v kurzech bylo postupné, metodické, často jdoucí od evidentního k mystic- kému. Seriály vycházely v tomto pořadí a pod těmito názvy: Kurs duchov- ního života (1927), Přátelství s Bohem (1928), Kurs vnitřní modlitby (1929), Kurs o darech Ducha sv. (1930), Kurs o následování Krista (1931), Kurs o lásce k Bohu (1932), Kurs o milosti (1933), Kurs o kněžství (1934), Kurs o Církvi jakožto zdroji duchovního života (1935), Kurs o ctnosti (1936), Kurs o mystickém těle Kristově (1937), Kurs asketicko-mystický (1938), Kurs o duchovním očišťování (1939–1940), Základy duchovního života (1941), Mystická cesta (1942–1943), Kurs duchovního života pro začátečníky (1943–1944/1945). Od třetího ročníku byla zavedena rubrika Pracovna, která sestávala z krát- kých zamyšlení, úvah a meditací se záměrem praktického naplňování křesťanských zásad. Dominantním tématem zde byla láska a Ježíš; dominantním autorem byl S. M. BRAITO – z bezmála 1200 příspěvků tohoto oddílu bylo téměř 900 BRAITOVÝCH! Vedle Pracovny zaujímají mimořádné postavení v časopise i rubriky anotací (Literatura, Žeň apod.), které stručně charakterizovaly aktuální vy- dávaná díla duchovní, teologické, mystické, beletristické, poetické a čás- tečně filosofické provenience zahraniční i domácí. Oddíl byl řazen vždy ke konci časopisu. Za dobu trvání revue zde bylo anotováno 6987 titulů (!), z toho bylo pouze 119 časopiseckých údajů. Téměř stejným dílem jsou zde zastoupeny tituly české a francouzské (obojí zhruba po čtvrtině rozsahu rubriky), plnou třetinu uvedených titulů však zaujímaly informace z ně- mecké knižní provenience. Nejčastěji uváděnými knihami byly publikace z nakladatelství Herder z Freiburgu i. B., Vyšehrad z Prahy, Desclée De Bröwer z Paříže a M. Marietti z Turína. Anotační rubriky Hlubiny nemají v našich prvorepublikových periodikách svým rozsahem obdobu, lze z nich rekonstruovat i dominující autory té doby, podat duchovní atmosféru doby na základě uvedených vydávaných titulů, přehledy můžou být i dnes cen- ným zdrojem informací. Autor tohoto edičního svazku v původním záměru předpokládal uvést i detailní záznamy jednotlivých anotovaných titulů dle 5 bibliografických zásad, ale jejich uvedení včetně rejstříkových přehledů by neúměrně překročilo zamýšlený rozsah spisu. Rukopisný přehled je však připraven a může být použit – dle zájmu čtenářů či institucí – v rozšířeném, novém či doplněném vydání této bibliografie. Obsah některých dalších rubrik – např. Výhledy, Život – byl veden dvojí zřetelnou linkou: Podávat svědectví a prožitek víry v rovině úvahové a současně naplňovat zásady křesťanství v každodennosti, v praktické čin- nosti, která však jde ruku v ruce s životem duchovním. Dvaadvacet ročníků revue vyšlo celkem na 12 794 stranách, které obsa- hovaly 4474 příspěvků a 6987 anotací. Nejvýkonnějším autorem s 1437 příspěvky (mimo anotace) byl S. M. BRAITO. Nejbližším BRAITOVÝM spo- lupracovníkem a druhým nejvýznamnějším mužem revue Na hlubinu byl REGINALD DACÍK (157 příspěvků mimo anotace). K dalším podstatným přispěvatelům patřili především: EMILIÁN SOUKUP, DOMINIK PECKA, JA- ROSLAV DURYCH, METODĚJ HABÁŇ, ANTONÍN ČALA a JINDŘICH STŘEDA. Každému z nich bylo v Hlubině uveřejněno

Before election to the papacy, Pacelli served as secretary of the Department of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, papal nuncio and Cardinal Secretary of State, in which capacity he worked to conclude treaties with European and Latin American nations, most notably the Reichskonkordat with Nazi Germany.     POPES PIUS XI AND PIUS XII AND THE IDEA OF AN ECUMENICAL COUNCIL Joseph A. Komonchak In the nineteenth century, even before the definitions of papal supremacy and infallibility at Vatican I, a good number of Catholics believed that the age of Councils had passed. At the beginning of the century, Joseph de Maistre devoted two chapters of The Pope to arguing to the superiority of the pope over a council. He recalled "the immense inconvenience of those great assemblies and the abuse to which they were subjected in the first ages of the Church."1 He cited Gregory of Nazienzen's unfavorable view of councils: I never saw a council assembled without danger and inconvenience.... To speak truly, I must say that I avoid, as much as I can, assemblies of priests and bishops; I never saw so much as one concluded in a happy and agreeable manner, and which did not tend rather to increase evils than to remove them.2 De Maistre concluded with an argument for their irrelevance today: Hume has made a brutal remark on the Council of Trent, which it is worth while, nevertheless, to take into consideration: "It is the only general council which has been held in an age truly learned and inquisitive. No one need expect to see another general council till the decay of learning and the progress of ignorance shall again fit mankind for these great impostures." If you take from this passage the insulting and scurrilous tone from which heresy is never free, there remains a good deal that is true: the more enlightened the world becomes, the less will a general council be thought of.
