The data in this study were taken from the anime series entitled Monogatari Series. Data from the anime series were collected using the contextual analysis method. The results showed seven dajare formation processes: homophones, mora change, metathesis mora, combining phrases, dividing phrases, mixing foreign languages, and moving commas. Albrecht Classen1 In his Ph.D. dissertation, successfully defended at the Free University of Berlin in 2012 and now printed, Till Weingärtner focuses on the modern phenomenon of comedy in Japan as expressed in stand-up comedy either in entertainment clubs or on the stage in a TV studio. The specific form of comedy consists of two, sometimes three characters on the stage with no props who either present monologues or dialogues and engage in humorous, sometimes even vitriolic exchanges, with one figure normally more sophisticated than the other, and yet still being the victim of confusion and misunderstandings, a situation which causes the audience to laugh about both. This ‘manzai’ has gained tremendous popularity in Japan during the last decade, and Weingärtner offers an extensive analysis of a large number of recorded scenes of ‘owarai’ or comic performances, in total 750 hours aired by TV stations during the author’s stay in Kansai from April 2006 to May 2008. But he also draws from related comedy genres in Japan, such as the sketch comedy, the solo comedy, and ‘rakugo.’ It remains unclear whether Weingärtner limited his study to those recordings, or whether he also included many others from previous years, as his comments and subsequent analysis implies. He selected, for instance, the TV program Bakushō On Air Battle of the station NHK, aired between 1999 and 2010, and the program Enta no kamisama, aired by Nihon TV between 2003 and 2010, which allows him, significantly, to develop a broader historical overview reflecting contemporary Japanese society.

The Wilson QuarterlyISummer 1985 46 Japan's New Popular Culture On any given day, Americans encounter something from Japan. To Detroit's dismay, roughly 1.9 million U.S. citizens purchased Toyotas, Datsuns, and other Japanese-made cars in 1984. At work, we use Canon copiers, Komatsu tractors, and Epson com- puters. At home, we listen to Panasonic or AIWA stereos and watch TV on Sony or Hitachi sets. Scarcely a week of network evening news passes without some mention of Japan, either as economic rival or as political ally. Yet, despite this daily presence, Japan today remains a country no less strange to American eyes than it was some eight decades ago. It was then that the American Lafcadio Hearn, one of the first Japan scholars, wrote of "the immense difficulty of perceiving and comprehending what underlies the surface of Japanese life." Current American attempts to understand Japan reflect continuing confusion. Business analysts speak of Japan's eco- nomic success-quality-control circles, high worker productiv- ity-in almost mystical tones. Sociologists sketch a society of labyrinthine complexity. Historians go back to the violent ex- tremes of the feudal Tokugawa era (1603-1868) or the horrors of the Pacific War. Feature stories in American magazines and newspapers concentrate on kabuki performances, flower ar- ranging, geisha, and tea ceremonies.
