Residential neighbour- hoods will either collapse or redlined for new development as their residents start to move out (The Lure of the Local, 202). At the same time, coun- try towns are being abandoned, working class neighbourhoods are further ghettoized and steel towns are rusting in decay as “deserted downtowns con- trast with exurban building booms” (The Lure of the Local, 202). An example of this type of neighbourhood is Griffintown, which was once a working class neighbourhood squeezed between Saint Gabriel farm and the suburbs of Recollets and Victoria town in Montreal. Griffintown was an industrial and residential district. It was urbanised in the 19th century and gradually decayed through the 20th century. As an industrial district it saw the birth of very first large factories of Canada and was known as the industrial heartland of Canada. The area was of great interest to most developers, and various projects have been proposed for this area. This report addresses the follow­ ing question: How does the extent artefact system in Griffintown represent tangible evidence of the way of life before forced resettlement, and are there any artefacts worth preserving in Griffintown, an area slated for imminent development? Hammond, and Anja Bock, eds. Palimpsest III: The Dialectics of Montreal’s Public Spaces An already-made geography sets the stage, while the willful making of history dictates the action …1 The sidewalk plays a fundamental role as a place of transit in the modern city, as well as being a space of sensorial experience. A specific walkway can represent aesthetic change across generations while, nonetheless, eliciting sensory experiences where the pedestrian’s feeling of safety is axiomatic. Such a space is seen in a photograph that is part of Montreal artist Bill Vazan’s conceptual project Highway #37, created in 1970. Detail 151 (Fig. 1), a black and white photograph, illustrates an eastward view of Notre-Dame Street taken from the southern sidewalk along the Notre-Dame Street overpass, a viaduct that spans over the old Dalhousie and Viger stations rail-yards. This is a historic locus linked to travel: this epic street exits Old Montreal towards the eastern part of the island. On today’s maps it spans between Berry and St-Christophe streets. When viewed through Vazan’s framing, this cityscape still serves as a striking palimpsest of the city’s modernist past, where, formally, the sidewalk encompasses all the elements associated with a safe space for pedestrian travel. A comparative view of the landscape seen in Vazan’s photograph between the time it was made and the present further enriches the narrative of this place, which nowadays sits on the cusp of the city’s salient tourist space, Old Montreal.

    Transformation of the Bonaventure Expressway at the Downtown Gateway Principal development issues Context The transformation of the Bonaventure Expressway from Saint- Jacques to Brennan Streets will create a major urban boulevard with lanes located on either side of a string of central city blocks to be made available for development. The transform- ation of this expressway segment frees up land owned by the City of Montreal and complements the redevelopment of the adjacent districts (QIM, Cité Multimédia and Griffintown). The project will thus transform the main gateway to Montreal into a populated and vibrant district while extending the downtown area. Development objectives Design a prestigious gateway to the city and a vital link between the downtown area and the Peel Basin (the river); Revitalize the surrounding districts: Faubourg des Récollets and Griffintown; Reduce road congestion by giving priority to public transit while maintaining traffic flow; Improve the quality and safety of surface and underground pedestrian movement, working in close collaboration with the public transit networks; Provide public places that are pleasant, safe and user-friendly; Facilitate vigorous real estate development linked to the downtown area.
