Palimpsest III: The Dialectics of Montreal’s Public Spaces Coles 1 As a site of identity for the multiple affiliations of the people of Montreal, the Montreal Forum represents much more than a hockey arena. Between 1924 and 1996, the Forum hosted thousands of events, from professional hockey, to rock concerts, circus performances, religious gatherings, professional wrestling and events of the 1976 Summer Olympics. In 1996 the Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club, the main occupants of the site, moved from the Forum to the Molson (now Bell) Centre. After the departure of the Canadiens was announced, many Montreal residents feared that the Forum would be destroyed. A huge public outcry to save the building ensued. The Forum was ultimately saved and transformed into an entertainment complex called the Pepsi Forum that incorporated some memorabilia from the site’s history into its design. With this attempt to keep the local affect of the Forum alive in mind, this essay asks why so many were opposed to the demolition of the Forum? Was the adaptive re-use of the Forum successful in capturing the essential and important aspects of the building for its fans? Residential neighbour- hoods will either collapse or redlined for new development as their residents start to move out (The Lure of the Local, 202). At the same time, coun- try towns are being abandoned, working class neighbourhoods are further ghettoized and steel towns are rusting in decay as “deserted downtowns con- trast with exurban building booms” (The Lure of the Local, 202). An example of this type of neighbourhood is Griffintown, which was once a working class neighbourhood squeezed between Saint Gabriel farm and the suburbs of Recollets and Victoria town in Montreal. Griffintown was an industrial and residential district. It was urbanised in the 19th century and gradually decayed through the 20th century. As an industrial district it saw the birth of very first large factories of Canada and was known as the industrial heartland of Canada. The area was of great interest to most developers, and various projects have been proposed for this area. This report addresses the follow­ ing question: How does the extent artefact system in Griffintown represent tangible evidence of the way of life before forced resettlement, and are there any artefacts worth preserving in Griffintown, an area slated for imminent development?     1: Montreal and the Jewish Community in the 1920's Montreal in the 1920's was a sharply divided city, both socially and culturally. Rifts separated the wealthy from the poor, uptowner from East-ender, anglophone from fran- cophone, immigrant from native-born, and Gentile from Jew. From its origins in 1929, the Jewish General Hospital would contribute substantially to the bridging of these differences and to the promotion of greater harmony in efforts for the benefit of all. Both Montreal's population and that of the Jewish community within it had been growing rapidly for some time. Census figures reveal that the number of people living in Montreal, after having more than doubled since the turn of the century, increased from 618,506 in 1921 to 818,577 ten years later. Since much of this increase resulted from im- migration, a great deal of which was Jewish, Jews quickly rose to prominence as the third largest ethnic group in Montreal. After a gradual growth in the old, but small, Jewish community to some 8,100 persons in 1901, by 1921 its numbers had soared to 51,287, despite the interruption of immigration during the war years. Thus, in 1921 Jews accounted for a full seven percent of Montreal's population. Montreal grew in more than population during the first decades of the twentieth century and began to assume aspects of its present appearance. Industry, already the heart of Montreal's economy, continued to expand once the post-war recession was over. This trend was particularly visible in traditional industrial sectors - clothing, textiles, tobacco, and iron and steel products - as well as in some newer sectors, such as electrical appliances and oil products.

Palimpsest III: The Dialectics of Montreal’s Public Spaces An already-made geography sets the stage, while the willful making of history dictates the action …1 The sidewalk plays a fundamental role as a place of transit in the modern city, as well as being a space of sensorial experience. A specific walkway can represent aesthetic change across generations while, nonetheless, eliciting sensory experiences where the pedestrian’s feeling of safety is axiomatic. Such a space is seen in a photograph that is part of Montreal artist Bill Vazan’s conceptual project Highway #37, created in 1970. Detail 151 (Fig. 1), a black and white photograph, illustrates an eastward view of Notre-Dame Street taken from the southern sidewalk along the Notre-Dame Street overpass, a viaduct that spans over the old Dalhousie and Viger stations rail-yards. This is a historic locus linked to travel: this epic street exits Old Montreal towards the eastern part of the island. On today’s maps it spans between Berry and St-Christophe streets. When viewed through Vazan’s framing, this cityscape still serves as a striking palimpsest of the city’s modernist past, where, formally, the sidewalk encompasses all the elements associated with a safe space for pedestrian travel. A comparative view of the landscape seen in Vazan’s photograph between the time it was made and the present further enriches the narrative of this place, which nowadays sits on the cusp of the city’s salient tourist space, Old Montreal.
