QUALITY THROUGHOUT ALL ASPECTS OF MANUFACTURE Principle of the Extrusion Process (Brass, Copper and Aluminium)

The extrusion process uses continuous cast billet which has had Manufactured to ISO 9001 the outside diameter machined to remove oxides and other casting All Kormax bronze products are manufactured using continuous or centrifugal casting methods. Bronze produced marks. These billets are pre-heated to approximately by either of these methods has significant advantages over sand-cast material. Some of these advantages are: 650-700°C before loading into the extrusion press. Once heated, • Increased tensile strength and wearing qualities – by up to 35% the billet is positioned on top of the die and the extrusion press • Higher hardness and ductility container lowered down over it. At this point 1000 tonnes of pressure is applied by the extrusion press causing the metal to be • Freedom from porosity extruded through the die. The size and shape of the die determines • Fine grain structure the size and shape of the extruded rod. • Improved machining properties and longer tool life • Less ‘clean-up’ allowance needed for machining Broad Range of Lengths Available All Kormax brass, copper and aluminium products are extruded. This manufacturing process is also well known for Kormax clients value the flexibility offered by our user-friendly cutting service. Meeting customer specific the high quality material produced. A brief explanation of these manufacturing processes is given below. requirements is our specialty, that’s why we cut material to suit almost any length requirement – at no extra cost. Bronze is the name for metal usually consisting of 80 - 95% copper with the balance made up of one or more other metals, such as tin, , nickel, aluminium, iron, zinc or manganese.

3000 BC ancient man discovered that adding a small percentage of tin to copper greatly increased it’s strength, hence the beginning of the ‘Bronze Age’.

Bronze is a favoured material when strength and corrosion resistance are called for.

863 Manganese Bronze 863

Overview

863 is a high strength manganese bronze or high tensile brass (HTB3). It is an exceptionally strong material that has higher hardness and strength ratings than even 304/316 . 863 also has good wearing properties and good ductility, making it suitable for extra heavy duty slow speed bearings and for hydraulic cylinder components. Good lubrication is required for components made from 863. This material has reasonable corrosion resistance but de-zincification can occur under certain conditions.

Following this, the component is 14mm 20mm 30mm OM142030 9/16 11/16 1 OI70 heated to a high temperature so that the powder particles bond together to form a sintered part, then it is sized to 16mm 20mm 25mm OM162025 5/8 3/4 1 OI75 16mm 22mm 25mm OM162225 5/8 13/16 1 OI80 obtain the exact dimensions and close tolerances desired. The oil storage capacity of standard sintered bronze is usually 19 – 22% of its total volume. When a 25mm 35mm 50mm OM253550 1 1-3/8 1 OI125 component is in use it is inevitable that there is some friction, which in turn creates an increase in temperature. 30mm 40mm 50mm OM304050 1 1-1/2 2 OI130 35mm 45mm 50mm OM354550 1-1/4 1-1/2 2 OI135 With this rise in temperature, oil is forced out of the pores due to the volumetric expansion of oil being much higher 40mm 50mm 80mm OM405080 1-3/8 1-3/4 1-1/2 OI140 than that of bronze. The flow of oil out of the pores to the bearing surface ensures constant lubrication while a 50mm 60mm 100mm OM5060100 1-1/2 2 2 OI144 machine is in use. When shaft rotation stops, cooling of the bearing occurs and the oil is drawn back into the pores 55mm 70mm 70mm OM557070 1-1/2 2 3 OI145 again. Due to this manner of operation the quantity of oil used is infinitesimal, which means that the oil contained in a sintered bronze bush is sufficient to give good lubrication over a period of many years. 385 Brass 31/32 464 Naval Brass (Tobin Bronze) 33

Brass is a bright yellowy gold metal consisting mainly of copper and zinc. The copper content is usually in the range of 55 -70%

The addition of zinc to copper results in a metal of increased strength and hardness when compared to unalloyed copper.

Brass is a highly machinable, form-able and corrosion resistant metal. Commonly used for plumbing fittings, architectural hardware, fasteners and many more machined parts.

The earliest brass, called calamine brass, dates to Neolithic times. It was probably made by reduction of mixtures of zinc ores and copper ores.

The malleability and traditionally attributed acoustic properties of brass have made it the metal of choice for musical instruments.

29 Copper is a naturally Cu occurring soft, Copper 63.546 malleable metal.

Copper has a reddish, orange lustre. Gold is the only other naturally occurring metal that has a colour other than white or grey.

Copper was the first metal to be used widely by man, over 5,000 years ago.

Today Copper is the third most commonly used metal in the world, following Iron and Aluminium.

Copper was favoured in early times for it’s formability and corrosion resistance. These attributes are still valued, but it is copper’s thermal and electrical conductivity that makes it so widely used today.

4E & 3D 41 Silver Steel 43/44

Cast iron was first used in Asia circa bc then about 2000 years 600later its use gradually spread to Europe, England and the USA. Used widely in architectural and structural applications until steel began to take over in late 1800’s.

Ironbridge in Shropshire, England was the first major bridge in the world to be constructed wholly of cast iron, built between 1777-1780.

Built from tonnes almost 385 of metal with nearly 1700 individual components the bridge is still open to pedestrians today.

Silver steel is sometimes referred to as (UK) or Drill Rod (USA). Supplied as a centreless round bar in annealed (soft) form. It is easily worked into shape then hardened for uses such as punches, shafts, pins and more.

Cast Iron 3D 4E

Overview Kormax 4E Continuous Cast Iron bars consist of a uniform pearlitic structure from surface to core. As a continuous cast iron bar it has a fine grain structure combined with the fine graphite flake size and dense homogeneous structure. The material is well suited for high speed machining and is suitable in applications that demand the ability to withstand high pressures without leaking. Kormax cast iron is also available in a that has a stock grade of 3D and is otherwise known as spheroidal graphite or nodular iron. The material is high strength, ductile and more readily machined than other styles of cast iron. Its properties include being highly elastic and resistant to impact and is suitable for applications involving thermal and mechanical shock. 3D Ductile Iron is also the preferred choice for making hydraulic cylinder components.

6061 Aluminium 47/48

13 Aluminium is a silvery white, non-magnetic, ductile, Al soft, metal. It is a chemical Aluminium 26.982 element in the boron group.

Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the world. It is the third most common element in the earth’s crust, making up around 8% of it.

Pure aluminium is extremely rare. It is so chemically reactive that native specimens are limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals.

Aluminium was first produced in an impure form by Danish physicist Hans Christian Orsted in 1825

Structural components made from aluminium are vital to the transportation, aerospace and construction sectors due to its low density and corrosion resistant properties.

6061 Aluminium 6061

Overview Aluminium Alloy 6061 is a medium to high strength heat-treatable alloy. It has very good corrosion resistance to atmospheric conditions and very good weldability although reduced strength in the weld zone. It has medium fatigue strength and is widely available.
