Cirugía y embarazo, del doctor y miembro fundador Ignacio Chávez. Dicha obra, fraguada en las prensas de los talle- res tipográficos de la Editorial Stylo, bajo la dirección de Francisco Orozco Muñoz, fue la simiente de lo que se llamaría la biblioteca de El Colegio Nacional, que hoy suma, a 77 años de su fundación, más de mil títulos publicados. El Colegio Nacional se creó el 8 de abril de 1943 como una ins- titución pública dedicada a la divulgación de la cultura científica, artística y humanística con el fin de transmitir “la sabiduría de la época” y fortalecer la “conciencia de la nación”, como se lee en su decreto fundacional. Esto se realizaría principalmente mediante conferencias o exposiciones gratuitas, de libre acceso y sin ninguna restricción curricular o de registro para quienes quedaban “impedi- dos de concurrir a los centros en que normalmente se imparten es- tas enseñanzas” o para “quienes, ya iniciados en ciertas disciplinas, buscan su perfeccionamiento”. La idea de su fundación fue del filó- sofo Antonio Caso, quien, inspirado a su vez en el Collège de France, lo concibió como una acción en favor de la cultura y la civilización contra la barbarie de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En su origen se designaron quince miembros fundadores, quienes a su vez eligieron a los miembros restantes hasta completar veinte, el número previsto en el decreto antes mencionado. Los primeros fueron Mariano Azuela, Alfonso Caso, Antonio Caso, Carlos Chá- vez, Ezequiel A. Chávez, Ignacio Chávez, Enrique González Martí- nez, Isaac Ochoterena, Ezequiel Ordóñez, José Clemente Orozco, Alfonso Reyes, Diego Rivera, Manuel Sandoval Vallarta, Manuel Uribe Troncoso y José Vasconcelos. Desde aquel lejano año hasta el 2020, han formado parte de la institución ciento ocho hombres y mujeres que representan lo más destacado del pensamiento y la creación de sus generaciones, entre quienes se encuentran más de setenta premios Nacionales de Ciencias y Artes, los tres premios Nobel mexicanos, seis premios Príncipe de Asturias, dos premios en ciencias de la Unesco, cuatro premios Cervantes y muchos más. Dada la diversidad de disciplinas y saberes que conviven en la institución, la producción de El Colegio Nacional se ha caracteri- zado por su universalidad temática, articulada en cuatro áreas del conocimiento: Artes y Letras, Ciencias Biológicas y de la Salud, Ciencias Exactas y Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades. A su vez, es- tos ejes están determinados por un principio rector en la definición editorial: todas las obras publicadas por la institución son de la au- toría, coordinación o versan sobre alguno de sus colegiados. A lo largo de estos setenta y cinco años de historia edito- rial, el catálogo se ha cristalizado en las siguientes coleccio- nes: Discursos de Ingreso, Opúsculos, Textos, Obras, Músicos y Medicina, Biografías y Pensamiento Jurídico Contemporáneo, así como en ediciones especiales, obras audiovisuales, coediciones y la Memoria de El Colegio Nacional. El presente catálogo de publicaciones concentra la información del fondo vivo de El Colegio Nacional, estructurado a partir de las colecciones antes mencionadas. Dentro de cada una se presenta información detallada de lo producido de 2016 a 2020, indicando a qué área temática y materia específica corresponde cada título. Como podrá notar el lector, cada área se distingue con un color: Artes y Letras Ciencias Biológicas y de la Salud Ciencias Exactas Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades General Al final del catálogo, se ofrece una lista con la totalidad de los títu- los actualmente disponibles para su venta, publicados entre 1951 y 2020. Estos listados se presentan agrupados por área temática para facilitar las búsquedas. Este catálogo pretende ser un vehículo de aproximación para ofrecer la riqueza editorial de El Colegio Nacional al mayor número posible de lectores. Garcia was a student at San Francisco State where some of the earliest protests against racism in higher education institutions took place. This collection has material on that event in 1968 and 1969. The bulk of the nearly 600 posters span from the late 1960s through the 1980s. These posters include protest art, civil rights demonstrations and marches, Vietnam War-era protests and rallies, as well as United Farm Workers (UFW)-related events. Additionally, there are writings, publications, teaching papers and other informative materials that Garcia gathered as part of his research and teaching in Chicano Arts and the Chicano Movement, ranging from 1967 to 2000s.
