Electronic Make-Up Meetings Evan Smith and Brian Birdwell "Evan Smith Interviews Sen. Brian Birdwell" www.rotaryeclubone.org Evan Smith is the Editor in Chief and CEO of , a non-profit, non-partisan digital news organization based in Austin. The Tribune's deep coverage of Texas politics and public policy can be found at its website, texastribune.org; in the pages of the New York Times; and in newspapers and on TV and radio stations across the state. In not quite four years in operation, the Tribune has won four Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association, a Sigma Delta Chi award for excellence in journalism Club Events from the Society of Professional Journalists, a general excellence award from the Online News Association and a Knight-Batten award for innovations in journalism. Before co- No Upcoming Events founding the Tribune, Evan spent nearly 18 years at Texas Monthly , including eight years as Editor and a year as President and Editor in Chief. On his watch, Texas Monthly twice won the National Magazine Award for General Excellence. For eight years, Evan hosted the Lone Star Emmy Award-winning weekly interview program Texas Monthly Talks , which aired on PBS stations statewide. He currently hosts Overheard with Evan Smith, airing on PBS stations nationally. A New York native, he has a bachelor's degree in public policy from Hamilton College and a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University.

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Brian Birdwell is a native Texan, decorated military veteran and lifelong conservative Republican currently representing Texas Senate District 22. In 1990, he deployed to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for Exceptional Meritorious Achievement. On Sept. 11, 2001, when American Airlines Flight 77 was crashed just yards away from his second floor Pentagon office, Brian was critically wounded and severely burned. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received that day. Upon retirement in July 2004, he was awarded the Legion of Merit.

In June 2010, Brian won a special election to the Texas State Senate. Five months later, he was re-elected to serve a full term. Brian serves as the vice-chairman of the Higher Education committee, vice-chairman of the Veteran Affairs committee and is a member of the Economic Development and Government Organization committees. In January 2012, he was appointed by Lieutenant Governor to the Sunset Advisory Commission and the Joint Interim Committee to Study Human Trafficking.

Brian and Mel have been married for 26 years and they have one son, Matt, who a recent graduate of Texas Tech University.

Coaches Kevin Gill and Ricky Rhodes

"MCC Basketball"

MCC head men’s basketball coach Kevin Gill took over the program in 2002. Since then, the Highlanders have secured a regional tournament berth every year, advancing to the semifinals four times. The Highlanders are 243-73 under Gill’s watch. Last season, Gill collected his 400th career victory as a head coach.

Gill has led the Highlanders to four conference titles: NTJCAC Champions in 2006, 2010 and 2011 and Co-Champions in 2007. Those accomplishments garnered him conference

Coach of the Year honors in 2006, 2010 and 2011 and Co-Coach of the Year honors in 2007. In 10 years, Gill has seen 43 players named all-conference.

Gill came to MCC from Waco's La Vega High School. In three years at his alma mater, Gill led the Pirates to a 92-11 record and a state championship for the first time in the school's history. Prior to La Vega, Gill was head coach at Hubbard High School, where the Jaguars advanced to the state playoffs for the first time in 10 years and compiled a 25-7 record. Gill began his coaching career in 1993 at Lake Air Middle School in Waco and then was an assistant at La Vega for two years before moving to Hubbard.

Gill graduated from Paul Quinn College in 1990. In 1998, he earned his master's degree from Prairie View A&M University. Gill and his wife, Suzette, a teacher and coach at LaVega High School, are the parents of two daughters: Chelsi, 17, and Kobi, 14.

In his 13-year tenure, Ricky Rhodes has led the Highlassies to two North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference championships and has had 57 all-conference players, 21 all- region players and four NJCAA All-Americans. Under Rhodes' guidance, the Highlassies have made 11 regional tournament appearances. The squad is a regular at the tournament, making an appearance in 23 of the last 26 years. Rhodes took over the women's program in 1999 after three seasons as an assistant for the men’s team. In just his second year, Rhodes had three players named all-conference, with two of those being unanimous choices, and he garnered Co-Coach of the Year honors that season.

After graduating from Waco's Richfield High School in 1986, Rhodes was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1987 and spent five years playing baseball in that organization before attending MCC, where he played basketball. He later transferred to the University of the Incarnate Word, where he led the Crusaders to a Heart of Texas Conference championship in 1994 and a tournament championship the following year.

Rhodes was an all-conference selection both of his years at Incarnate Word and an All- American as a senior. He also led the Crusaders in rebounding and assists both years. Rhodes graduated from Incarnate Word in 1995 and earned a master’s degree in physical education from Tarleton State University in 2000.

Rhodes and his wife, Ginger, a teacher at La Vega Elementary, have two daughters: Avery, 14, and Reese, 11; and 6-year-old twin sons, Derrick and Allen.

Coach Kim Mulkey

"Lady Bear Basketball"

Kim Mulkey is the head women's basketball coach at Baylor. She is the first person in NCAA history to win a basketball national championship as a player, assistant coach, and head coach. In 2000, Mulkey took over a Baylor program that had finished the 1999 –2000 season 7–20 and last in the Big 12. In her first season at Baylor, she led the Lady Bears program to its first NCAA tournament bid. In just 12 years at Baylor, the former Olympic Gold medalist has twice guided the Lady Bear basketball program to the pinnacle of women's basketball, the 2005 and 2012 NCAA national championship, 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, 12, 20-win seasons including three, 30-win campaigns, and an NCAA single-season record, men's or women's, 40 victories. In addition, over the past seven seasons, Mulkey has led the Lady Bears to three Final Four appearances (2005, '10, `12) and seven Big 12 Conference titles.

In 2012, Mulkey swept all Coach of the Year awards, winning WBCA, USBWA, Associated Press, Naismith and Big 12 Conference honors. She is a member of the National High School Hall of Fame, the Louisiana High School Hall of Fame, Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Louisiana Tech Athletics Hall of Fame. In 1999, she was the lone female named among the Louisiana Sports Writers top 25 athletes of the 20th century and was listed by Sports Illustrated as one of the top 50 sports figures of Louisiana for the 20th century. In June of 2000, she was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame located in Knoxville, Tenn. Additionally, Mulkey was inducted into the Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007 and entered the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

Mulkey is extremely active in and around the Waco community, donating her time and money to many organizations. Born May 17, 1962, in Santa Ana, Calif., Mulkey has two children, daughter Makenzie (21) and son Kramer (18).

Rotary Welcomes Two New Members Posted by Julie Carlson

The Rotary Club of Waco welcomes two new members -- Ed Brown and Brenda Shuttlesworth.

Ed Brown is assistant director of operations for Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas for Civil Air Patrol-USAF, Department of the Air Force. He has held that position since 1992. From 1972-1992 he was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force and has more than 4,800 flight hours. He completed a combat tour in Iraq during Desert Storm as Air Liaison Officer to the 24th Infantry Division and was awarded a Bronze Star. Ed has been active with Boy Scouts for more than 50 years, including serving as council president at the Heart O’ Texas Council and Director of the Visitor Center at National Jamboree. He also has held various positions in the Masonic Fraternity and currently is District Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas. He is a member of Highland Baptist Church. He and his wife, Dottie, have one son, Edward Jr.

Brenda Shuttlesworth serves as Executive Director of Waco Habitat for Humanity. Brenda and her husband, Bill, recently relocated from Conroe and love being back home in Waco. Brenda earned her undergraduate degree in Social Work from Baylor University and a Master of Christian Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Brenda has served exclusively in not-for-profit and church organizations. She served 14 years in community mental health and mental retardation

centers in Denton and Conroe, eight years on church staff in Conroe, and three years with Buckner Children and Family Services before joining Waco Habitat for Humanity in March.

Fun on the Water at the Aug. Social at BSR Cable Park Posted by Julie Carlson

A number of Waco Rotarians and their families turned out for the August social held at Waco's new BSR Cable Park. Those attending dined on fajitas while watching wake boarders on the lake. Later in the evening, immediate past president Chris DeCluitt showed his skills on the wake board. Kathy Schroeder and her committee have another social in the works. Stay tuned.

Scholarship Recipients Recognized at Aug. 19 Meeting Posted by Julie Carlson

The Waco Rotary Club recognized its2013 Scholarship Award recipients at the Aug. 19 meeting. Scholarship recipients are juniors or seniors in college, permanent residents or McLennan County and must have resided in McLennan County for at least two consecutive years prior to the scholarship award. All five of our winners have impressive credentials, a number of significant achievements, and are involved in multiple extracurricular activities in the community, at church and with their education institutions.

Armando Contreras

Armando is a graduate of University High and will be a senior at Texas A&M, where he is majoring in Industrial Distribution with a minor in Spanish. He is a student assistant in the Division of Administration and is involved with the Society of Latinos in Science and Engineering, the

Kelsey Dodson

Kelsey attends Austin College where she is majoring in biology and Spanish. She serves as a Student Assembly representative and is involved with the Student Ambassador program, the Chamber Orchestra Ensemble and the Campus Ministry program. Additionally, she has worked as a campus tour guide, teaching assistant in the chemistry department and as a student assistant in the Institutional Advancement Department. She was awarded a $1,500 scholarship.

Carolyn Hoy

Carolyn is a junior at Dallas Baptist University, where she is majoring in English with a minor in communications. She has a 4.0 GPA. Her extracurricular activities include Promise International, intramural softball and various ministry activities. She also is an accomplished equestrian and has worked extensively at the Faith Rest Ranch. She was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Sarah Frazier

Sarah is junior at Rice University, majoring in physics and astronomy while maintaining a 3.6 GPA. She completed an internships this summer at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Last summer, Sarah completed a National Science Foundation internship at the Baylor University Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics, and Engineering Research (CASPER). Her extracurricular activities include Honor Council , Peer academic advising , Rice Thresher newspaper and Brown College Theatre producing theater shows. She was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Katherine Goodnight

Katherine is a junior attending Texas Christian University, majoring in engineering. She is a member of the Concert Choral Choir, JVR Honors College, the Society of Women Engineers and assisted with freshman orientation activities at TCU. During the summer, she has worked as an event planner and as an assistant at Charla Holmes Photography studios. Katherine was awarded a $1000 scholarship.
