Brian Birdwell" www.rotaryeclubone.org Evan Smith is the Editor in Chief and CEO of The Texas Tribune, a non-profit, non-partisan digital news organization based in Austin. The Tribune's deep coverage of Texas politics and public policy can be found at its website, texastribune.org; in the pages of the New York Times; and in newspapers and on TV and radio stations across the state. In not quite four years in operation, the Tribune has won four Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association, a Sigma Delta Chi award for excellence in journalism Club Events from the Society of Professional Journalists, a general excellence award from the Online News Association and a Knight-Batten award for innovations in journalism. A New York native, he has a bachelor's degree in public policy from Hamilton College and a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University. Lt. Col. (Ret.) Brian Birdwell is a native Texan, decorated military veteran and lifelong conservative Republican currently representing Texas Senate District 22. In 1990, he deployed to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for Exceptional Meritorious Achievement. On Sept. 11, 2001, when American Airlines Flight 77 was crashed just yards away from his second floor Pentagon office, Brian was critically wounded and severely burned. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received that day. Upon retirement in July 2004, he was awarded the Legion of Merit. In June 2010, Brian won a special election to the Texas State Senate. Five months later, he was re-elected to serve a full term. Brian serves as the vice-chairman of the Higher Education committee, vice-chairman of the Veteran Affairs committee and is a member of the Economic Development and Government Organization committees. In January 2012, he was appointed by Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst to the Sunset Advisory Commission and the Joint Interim Committee to Study Human Trafficking. Brian and Mel have been married for 26 years and they have one son, Matt, who a recent graduate of Texas Tech University. Sept. 23 Coaches Kevin Gill and Ricky Rhodes "MCC Basketball" MCC head men’s basketball coach Kevin Gill took over the program in 2002. Since then, the Highlanders have secured a regional tournament berth every year, advancing to the semifinals four times. The Highlanders are 243-73 under Gill’s watch. Last season, Gill collected his 400th career victory as a head coach. Gill has led the Highlanders to four conference titles: NTJCAC Champions in 2006, 2010 and 2011 and Co-Champions in 2007. In 10 years, Gill has seen 43 players named all-conference. Gill came to MCC from Waco's La Vega High School. In three years at his alma mater, Gill led the Pirates to a 92-11 record and a state championship for the first time in the school's history. Prior to La Vega, Gill was head coach at Hubbard High School, where the Jaguars advanced to the state playoffs for the first time in 10 years and compiled a 25-7 record. Gill began his coaching career in 1993 at Lake Air Middle School in Waco and then was an assistant at La Vega for two years before moving to Hubbard. Gill graduated from Paul Quinn College in 1990. In 1998, he earned his master's degree from Prairie View A&M University. Gill and his wife, Suzette, a teacher and coach at LaVega High School, are the parents of two daughters: Chelsi, 17, and Kobi, 14. In his 13-year tenure, Ricky Rhodes has led the Highlassies to two North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference championships and has had 57 all-conference players, 21 all- region players and four NJCAA All-Americans. Under Rhodes' guidance, the Highlassies have made 11 regional tournament appearances. The squad is a regular at the tournament, making an appearance in 23 of the last 26 years. Rhodes took over the women's program in 1999 after three seasons as an assistant for the men’s team. In just his second year, Rhodes had three players named all-conference, with two of those being unanimous choices, and he garnered Co-Coach of the Year honors that season. After graduating from Waco's Richfield High School in 1986, Rhodes was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1987 and spent five years playing baseball in that organization before attending MCC, where he played basketball. He later transferred to the University of the Incarnate Word, where he led the Crusaders to a Heart of Texas Conference championship in 1994 and a tournament championship the following year. Rhodes was an all-conference selection both of his years at Incarnate Word and an All- American as a senior. He also led the Crusaders in rebounding and assists both years. Rhodes graduated from Incarnate Word in 1995 and earned a master’s degree in physical education from Tarleton State University in 2000. Rhodes and his wife, Ginger, a teacher at La Vega Elementary, have two daughters: Avery, 14, and Reese, 11; and 6-year-old twin sons, Derrick and Allen. Sept. 30 Coach Kim Mulkey "Lady Bear Basketball" Kim Mulkey is the head women's basketball coach at Baylor. She is the first person in NCAA history to win a basketball national championship as a player, assistant coach, and head coach. In 2000, Mulkey took over a Baylor program that had finished the 1999 –2000 season 7–20 and last in the Big 12. In her first season at Baylor, she led the Lady Bears program to its first NCAA tournament bid.
