What is a Magnet ?

Magnet are public elementary, middle, and high schools of choice. Magnet schools offer a designed around a specialized theme, distractive curriculum, or academic focus that “attracts” students to the school. An entire campus may be designated as a magnet school or there may be magnet program ‘school within a school: with selected students involved.

Originally conceived to promote voluntary desegregation in schools in the 1960s, magnet schools continue to provide students with a valuable educational and personal experience through innovative practices and compelling modes of instruction. Magnet schools provide student diversity through choice and enhance equitable access for all students to high quality education. Magnet schools are aimed at increasing student achievement while permitting a student to focus on interests, talents, or career goals.

Magnet schools are part of the Seminole County Public Schools system and there are no fees to attend a magnet school. Magnet schools are open to all students who reside in Seminole County by application. Students are assigned to available seats by a random selection process.
