    Dusting ‘Em Off: Lush – Lovelife consequenceofsound.net/2012/04/dusting-em-off-lush-lovelife/ 4/28/2012 Lush’s third and final album, Lovelife, turns 16 this year. A sixteenth birthday is admittedly an unusual time to revisit an album, as tradition dictates that such occasions be reserved for anniversaries divisible by five, but Lovelife is one of those albums that has and will likely continue to remain uncelebrated and forgotten on its milestone anniversaries. Sure, Lush still retains a dedicated, loyal following and continues to gain new fans, but how often do they appear in critics’ “top albums and songs of the ’90s” lists? Not often enough. One of the guarantees in the world of music journalism is that any discussion of the history and relevance of 1/3 shoegaze will inevitably focus on how Cocteau Twins and The Jesus and Mary Chain pioneered the shimmering style, while My Bloody Valentine perfected it. Sometimes, Slowdive and Ride will be included, but Lush will likely earn a passing reference at best. Despite generally positive reviews and a commercial viability that found the London quartet playing television shows everywhere and successfully touring American cities other British bands of the ’90s never dared to tread, Lush has seemingly been forgotten or omitted for consideration as one of the shoegaze greats. This diminished legacy is at least partly because Lovelife is when Lush allegedly “went pop.” “Ladykillers” opens Lovelife with an attention-seizing circular melody and spunky vocals from Miki Berenyi that are no longer floating along in a sea of reverb. Confidently at the forefront, Berenyi eviscerates Anthony Kiedis, Matt Sharp, and men with transparent agendas and dubious attitudes towards women everywhere with an infectiously sarcastic wit.

    2 To Be Somebody: Ambition and the Desire to Be Different The context for difference This chapter aims to identify some of the bands that enjoyed chart success during the late 1970s and ’80s and identify their artistic traits by means of conversations with band members and those close to the bands. This chapter does not claim to be a definitive account or an inclusive list of innovative bands but merely a viewpoint from some of the individuals who were present at the time and involved in music, creativity and youth culture. Some of these individuals were in the eye of the storm while others were more on the periphery. However, common themes emerge and testify to the Scouse resilience identified in the previous chapter. Also, identifying objective truth is a difficult task, as one band member will often have a view of his band’s history that conflicts with that of other members of the same band. As such, it is acknowledged that this chapter presents only selective viewpoints. Trying something new: In what ways were the Liverpool bands creative and different? ‘Liverpool has always made me brave, choice-wise. It was never a city that criticized anyone for taking a chance.’ David Morrissey1 In terms of creativity, the theory underpinning this book which was stated in Chapter 1 is that successful Liverpool bands in the 1980s were different from each other and did not attempt to follow the latest local or national pop music trends. None of the bands interviewed falls into the categories of punk, disco or New Romantic, which were popular trends at the time.

    grey is the colour of hope is the fourth audio work compiled by Alan Dunn, artist and Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Art at Leeds Metropolitan University. Taking its cue from the manners in which the colour grey has been used in literature, art and design from the Old Testament to the present day, the CD brings together new audio works from students and staff in the School of Contemporary Art and Graphic Design alongside artists' compositions and archival material. The School comprises Contemporary Art Practice, Fine Art and Graphic Design. Permission has been secured and negotiated on each excerpt and the CD is produced in a limited edition of 1,000 and given away freely to students and interested parties. Support for the project has come from the Arts Council of England and Metropolitan University and design of the CD packaging is by John Barton and Sean Thomas, two Second Year Graphic Design students. Composed to echo JMW Turner's 1797 Moonlight, a Study at Millbank ­ a grey landscape shot with one brilliant spash of joy ­ the CD deploys a Leadbelly spoken word introduction from and a newly composed piece from Bill Drummond (Grey and me to bookend a lengthy grey sound collage (with one splash of colour) blending student works and content from Henry Miller, Gerhard Richter, Lydia Lunch, Rodney Marsh and William Shakespeare. Dunn's accompanying essay traces a personal interest in the colour, referencing Irina Ratushinskaya's prison journal the colour of hope, John Major and late 1800's photographs of Glasgow.     Middleton is firmly rooted between Rochdale, Oldham and Manchester. Middletown. Originally a typical Lancashire cotton town, the horizon dotted with tall mill chimneys. The 1950s & 60s brought a huge influx of people from the Manchester slum clearances on to the newly built Langley estate and this had a big bearing on the number of young people now living in Middleton. These young people in the 50s/60s had money to spend on fashion and music and it was against this background that the beat boom, already happening in Liverpool and Manchester, began taking shape in Middleton. Groups of young lads and some lasses headed down to Manchester’s music shops for guitars & drums and the occasional saxophone to form beat combos. Youth clubs and coffee bars became the places where these groups had their first taste of fame before moving on to the clubs of Manchester surrounding towns and the many dance halls of that period. For such a small town it was amazing that four local groups became so successful that they could become full time musicians and were given recording contracts by major London record companies:- The Country Gentlemen, signed to DECCA; TD Backus & The Powerhouse also on DECCA; The Measles on COLUMBIA and Ivans Meads on PARLOPHONE. Middleton’s musical heritage continued through the 70s and then in the 80s post punk band The Chameleons hit the headlines. The 80s brought The Mock Turtles, at the forefront of the Madchester Indie movement. Other notables in the music and entertainment sphere to emanate out of Middleton are Steve Coogan, John Richmond, Clint Boon of Inspiral Carpets, Maartin Allcock of Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull, Brendan and Martin Coogan.

The group’s seventh (and first self-produced) album, it’s a thrilling spread that feels spontaneous and vigorous. Simone and Amedeo Pace offer a deep gravity in sprawling, warm guitars than pulse and blush, piano lines that puncture, and tinny hi-hat percussion that conveys only a mote of passing time. Singer Kazu Makino channels the glum wonderment of classic shoegaze in the title track, sighing with featherweight elegance, “23 seconds, all things we love will die/23 magic, if you can change your life,” while Amedeo Pace’s distorted vocals on “Publisher” edge ever-closer to bluesy yelps over draping, mathy guitars and subtle electronic fuzz. But what makes this trio an indelible part of “the scene that celebrates itself,” across a pond and then a continent, is the roaring, fuzz-laden music of their debut, Shot Forth Self Living. The album’s resonant centerpiece, a chugging dirge cheekily named “A Short Happy Life,” features vocalist Beth Thompson crooning, “If you smile now, I just might melt” and evoking images of “honey sliding across the floor.” Beneath the tinnitus-inducing feedback, Medicine often fixate on love’s slow fade, that familiar theme of many shoegazing songs, balancing it with less likely doses of off-kilter instrumentation and effects (banjo, a ham radio, the hurdy-gurdy).
