Before the Body by Lauren Espinoza a Practicum Presented in Partial
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by ASU Digital Repository Before the Body by Lauren Espinoza A Practicum Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Fine Arts Approved April 2015 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Alberto Ríos, Chair Cynthia Hogue Sara Ball ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2015 ABSTRACT Set in South Texas, the poems of “Before the Body” address the border, not of place, but in between people. Following a narrative arc from a grandfather who spoke another language—silence—to a young boy who drowns in silence, these poems are expressions of the speaker’s search for intimacy in language: what words intend themselves to be, what language means to be. i DEDICATION This book is dedicated to honoring the memory of Rosa Espinoza, Refugio Espinoza, Clementina Smith Garza, Ruby Delgado, and Jose Flores, Jr; and for the Espinozas and Garzas that are not memory, but present—gracias for your voices and your support. Thank you to my professors and friends who have spken to me (at length) about the form and content behind these poems: Casie Moreland, Sara Sams, Michele Poulos, Bryan Asdel, Lauren Albin, Lakshami Mahajan, Chandra Narcia, Monica Teresa Ortiz, and Laurie Ann Guerrero. And finally, muchísimas gracias to my parents, thank you for believing in me throughout the years—it is your strength that has given me everything. -

“Standardization of Cultural Products in Latin Pop-Music”
“STANDARDIZATION OF CULTURAL PRODUCTS IN LATIN POP-MUSIC” RESEARCH PAPER PREPARED FOR THE 28TH ANNUAL ILASSA CONFERENCE ON LATIN AMERICA TO BE HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN FROM FEBRUARY 7TH THROUGH FEBRUARY 9TH ISRAEL ALONSO CHAVEZ LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN CENTER FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY MIAMI, FLORIDA [email protected] 2008 Introduction 2 This work represents the initial stage of a project whose seed germinated thanks in part to what seems to be an ongoing debate between two different approaches to music in the sociological field. The first approach puts much of its emphasis on the functional dimension of music. That is, on the social functions it performs, enables and enhances; but also on its economic functionality. The subservience of music to economic ends does not imply a loss in terms of creativity for the representatives of this perspective. The second perspective does not deny that music fulfills certain economic and social functions. Yet, unlike the former, the latter warns against the atrophy of creativity that can be brought about by the models implented by “the culture industries”, to use Theodor W. Adorno’s concept. My concern here lies with the question of whether the claims made by this important member of the Frankfurt school about the products of “the culture industries” can be substantiated with empirical evidence. I want to investigate whether popular music (Latin pop music in this case) is indeed, as Adorno says, just another standardized product fashioned after the formulas of “the culture industries”. This work, however, forms part of a broader preoccupation with the issue of musical style, what causes it and what makes it change. -

Exclusive Behind the Scenes Video of Martin Cohen’S 76Th
Exclusive Behind The Scenes Video Of Martin Cohen’s 76th Birthday Party 2015 Definitely one of the best parties anywhere, every year, I’m always honored to attend and sometimes perform with the band. Here’s some exclusive video. Sadly, I had to leave early, to perform with The Mambo Legends Orch and Tito Nieves at West Gate, which is fortunate for me. Check out the videos as I give a little tour and talk to some special people in attendance including the birthday boy. By Pete Nater Harvey Averne, Producer, Musician and Living Legend Harvey Averne is an American record producer, and the founder of CoCo Records, as well as its many subsidiaries. Established in 1972, CoCo was a label specializing in Afro-Cuban and Latin American Popular music, with special emphasis on the “New York Sound”, commonly referred to as “Salsa”. Averne’s gift for identifying and bringing together new and established musical talent, along with the careful management of his artists’ public image, initially made CoCo Records a major label nationally, and subsequently an international success. Over the next decade, he signed internationally known artists and was instrumental in bringing Latin American music into the American cultural mainstream. Averne personally ran the label from 1972 until 1979. His only rival was Fania Records, the leading Latin music label at the time and for whom Averne had previously been employed. He incorporated his new company (in partnership with Sam Goff, previously of Scepter/Wand Records) and quickly became one of the leading record producers in the Latin music field. -
