Fresh Fruit / RELEASES Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express „Looking in the eye of the world” a division of CD Cat. Nr.: MIG 60112 Format : CD Genre: Rock Cover: Hildesheimer Straße 83 30169 Hannover GERMANY www.mig-music.de Overview: Brian talks about the album LOOKING IN THE EYE OF THE WORLD “Butterfly” was written by my friend Herbie Hancock. It is such a beautiful tune and I wrote the lyrics for that. Herbie is a Buddhist , and in Buddhist philosophy the butterfly is the symbol for the soul. I try to actually explain that with the lyrics. When you die, the butterfly is finally leaving the body and returning to its source. Savannah liked Marvin Gaye’s “Trouble Man”. We have been doing it live; Karma wanted us to do it in a more HipHop style. Karma has created a whole new funk rhythm backtrack for the piece. I’m really knocked out with this version. Several years back, I was asked to write some tunes for a Freddie Hubbard album. He is my favourite trumpet player. Freddie was not so well at that time. He was in a phase where nobody knew whether he was going to turn up or not. I wrote two tunes. One was untitled but as Freddie never turned up I decided to call it “Freddie’s Flight”. Obviously, he had flown somewhere and just disappeared. Two years after that he turned up at one of my gigs. He had blown out his lip and couldn’t play. He said, I should rest my lip now for at least a year.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

  • Women in Rock OLLI Berkeley Course Material
Syllabus for Women in Rock: From the 1950s to the 1980s Instructor: Richie Unterberger, [email protected] OLLI Berkeley Week One: Women in Rock: The Early Years and The Girl Groups In the 1950s, rhythm and blues singers like Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker have some of the first rock’n’roll hits; Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids are top rockabilly acts; and Brenda Lee becomes the first woman rock superstar. As New York’s Brill Building becomes established as the top place for rock publishers, women like Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich become some of pop-rock’s most successful songwriters. Girl groups like the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Cookies have numerous hits in the early 1960s, forming one of the major trends in rock of the period. In the early 1960s, some of the most R&B-oriented girl groups become some of the first soul stars, especially for Motown Records, with the Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Mary Wells. Week Two: Women in Soul and British Rock Women soul singers emerge throughout the country, some of them more pop-oriented (Maxine Brown, Dionne Warwick), some of them earthier (Carla Thomas, Irma Thomas, Etta James). Aretha Franklin is anointed the Queen of Soul after moving to Atlantic Records and adopting a tougher, more spiritual sound. Other women soul singers with a forceful style emerge and increase in popularity, like Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and the Staple Singers. Although all-male guitar bands dominate the British Invasion, a good number of women singers also make an impact both in their native UK and in the US.

A Year in the Life of Bottle the Curmudgeon What you are about to read is the book of the blog of the Facebook project I started when my dad died in 2019. It also happens to be many more things: a diary, a commentary on contemporaneous events, a series of stories, lectures, and diatribes on politics, religion, art, business, philosophy, and pop culture, all in the mostly daily publishing of 365 essays, ostensibly about an album, but really just what spewed from my brain while listening to an album. I finished the last essay on June 19, 2020 and began putting it into book from. The hyperlinked but typo rich version of these essays is available at: https://albumsforeternity.blogspot.com/ Thank you for reading, I hope you find it enjoyable, possibly even entertaining. bottleofbeef.com exists, why not give it a visit? Have an album you want me to review? Want to give feedback or converse about something? Send your own wordy words to [email protected] , and I will most likely reply. Unless you’re being a jerk. © Bottle of Beef 2020, all rights reserved. Welcome to my record collection. This is a book about my love of listening to albums. It started off as a nightly perusal of my dad's record collection (which sadly became mine) on my personal Facebook page. Over the ensuing months it became quite an enjoyable process of simply ranting about what I think is a real art form, the album. It exists in three forms: nightly posts on Facebook, a chronologically maintained blog that is still ongoing (though less frequent), and now this book.

  • Stefan Firca Dissertation
Circles and Circuses: Carnivalesque Tropes in the Late 1960s Musical and Cultural Imagination DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University by Stefan Firca , B.M., M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Professor Arved Ashby, Advisor Professor Graeme Boone Professor Danielle Fosler-Lussier Copyright by Stefan Firca 2011 Abstract Circus, fairground, carousel, carnival imagery is everywhere during the late 1960s: in cover art, song lyrics, band names and song titles, music criticism, names of music venues, festivals, movies, literature. From circus tents to clowns, from jugglers to magicians, from carousels to parades, an entire carnivalesque lexis seems to be at play in what is generally termed “psychedelia.” The current study attempts to read and offer “thick description” (Geertz) of this vocabulary as part of a larger cultural and countercultural imagination, and integrate musical manifestations of the period (popular psychedelia and avant-garde / experimental music) in a semiotic network of metaphoric representation. If language is nothing more than a chain of metaphors (Lakoff), it is nevertheless true that we often take such metaphors as “rock ’n’ roll circus,” “song-carousel,” “riot of sound” for granted, since they are so widespread and culturally shared that an explanation of their meaning may appear pedantic. But what do these word-images actually mean? What is the range of their connotations? What is the relationship between them? Why are they so frequent in the late 1960s? And how are these tropes translated or suggested musically? One possible answer to the last question involves the broad concept of circularity , emblematic for the psychedelic era: a round melodic motive or harmonic progression, ii a cyclic phrase articulation, a motoric-recurrent riff, a spiraling or whirling waltz in triple time.

BRIAN AUGER BIOGRAPHY For over forty years, Brian Auger has been a musician’s musician. Jazz pianist, bandleader, session man, Hammond B3 innovator, and key player in the rise of jazz/rock fusion, Brian has done it all and then some. An incredible gentleman with one of the most varied careers in music, he has incorporated jazz, early British pop, R&B, soul and rock into an incredible catalog that has won him legions of fans all over the world. Auger’s unique musical career started at a very early age. Growing up in London during World War II, his family’s house had a player piano, and, at the age of three, ‘this thing fascinated me, with a pair of pedals. You put a piano roll in it, you pedaled, and, as you pedaled, paper was drawn across this grill, with corresponding holes it in for the 88 notes,” Brian remembers. “After a while I noticed that I was able to recognize the patterns in all the notes… I began to copy the notes [and] I was actually able to copy these melodies.” The Auger family’s home was bombed in 1944. “We were actually very fortunate, because the house was absolutely ruined, plastered, but none of us were hurt,” he recalls. Evacuated to the Leeds/Valley area for nearly two years, he lived with another family, and, as fate would have it, “they had a piano, and I would play it a little bit on there. When I got back home the thing that really grounded me was when I walked in the room, there was my piano.” Once home with his family, Auger became the entertainment for the neighborhood.
