Comic books have rarely been treated as a serious art form or cultural phenomenon. It used to be that creating a comic book would be considered shameful or something done only as side work. Beginning in the 1990s, some comic creators were able to leverage enough cultural capital to influence more media. In the post-9/11 world, generic elements of superheroes began to resonate with audiences; superheroes fight against injustices and are able to confront the evils in today’s America. This has created a billion dollar, Oscar-award-winning industry of superhero movies, as well as allowed created comic book careers for artists and writers.

  • International Festival of Comics, Animation, Cinema, and Games
INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF COMICS, ANIMATION, CINEMA, AND GAMES Ryan Ottley XXV Edition Golden Romics In recognition of the great artist behind The Amazing Spider-Man and Invincible and a career dedicated to superheroes Ryan Ottley, artist of the superhero series Invincible, created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker, and The Amazing Spider-Man, will be awarded the Golden Romics in the next edition of Romics (April 4 – 7). This will be a unique opportunity to meet such a great international figure and celebrate his concluding volume of Invincible, which will bring the monthly edition to a close in January 2020. The final chapter of the saga will be celebrated with the variant edition of monthly issue 64 of Invincible, presented exclusively at Romics and dedicated to his presence in Rome. Ryan Ottley is one of the most important comic book artists of contemporary American comics. He is best known for his work on Invincible and, most recently, The Amazing Spider-Man. Enthralled at the age of 15 by an issue of Amazing Spiderman (drawn by Todd McFarland) that his cousin Bryan had given him, Ryan Ottley immediately realized that this was the path he wanted to follow. After debuting as an artist (and co-creator) of the web-strip Bicycle Delivery Boy, he met Robert Kirkman, creator of the cult saga The Walking Dead. Ottley then went on to draw the first five issues of Haunt – a superhero series by Image Comics, created by Kirkman and Todd McFarlane – and then moved on to drawing for the regular Invincible series. From that moment on, Ottley’s life was changed and he established his name as one of the most interesting players in American comics.

  • Vigilantes, Incorporated: an Ideological Economy of the Superhero Blockbuster
VIGILANTES, INCORPORATED: AN IDEOLOGICAL ECONOMY OF THE SUPERHERO BLOCKBUSTER BY EZRA CLAVERIE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English with a minor in Cinema Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor José B. Capino, Chair Associate Professor Jim Hansen Associate Professor Lilya Kaganovsky Associate Professor Robert A. Rushing Professor Frank Grady,Department of English, University of Missouri, Saint Louis ii ABSTRACT Since 2000, the comic-book superhero blockbuster has become Hollywood’s most salient genre. “Heroes, Incorporated: A Political Economy of the Superhero Blockbuster” examines these seemingly reactionary fantasies of American power, analyzing their role in transmedia storytelling for a conglomerated and world-spanning entertainment industry. This dissertation argues that for all their apparent investment in the status quo and the hegemony of white men, superhero blockbusters actually reveal the disruptive and inhuman logic of capital, which drives both technological and cultural change. Although focused on the superhero film from 2000 to 2015, this project also considers the print and electronic media across which conglomerates extend their franchises. It thereby contributes to the materialist study of popular culture and transmedia adaptation, showing how 21st century Hollywood adapts old media for new platforms, technologies, and audiences. The first chapter traces the ideology of these films to their commercial roots, arguing that screen superheroes function as allegories of intellectual property. The hero’s “brand” identity signifies stability, even as the character’s corporate owners continually revise him (rarely her).

  • Jewish Comics; Or, Visualizing Current Jewish Narrative
I Jewish Comics + Jewish Comics; Or, Visualizing Current Jewish Narrative Derek Parker Royal Executive Editor, Philip Roth Studies Over the past several years, there has been rapidly growing interest in Jews and comics-not comics of the Groucho Marx, Woody Allen, and Jerry Seinfeld variety, but those as presented on the paneled pages of the newspaper funnies, comic books, and graphic novels.1 In the past four years alone, there have been no less than seven tides devoted exclusively to the history and analysis ofJews and comic art, and these books do not even include the many recent com ics-related texts with substantive portions devoted to specific Jewish authors.2 1"Graphic novel" is a term that is not without its problems, but I am using it here not only because of its widespread common use, but also to distinguish it from comic books as a publication format or delivery system. In this sense, "comics" applies to the medium as a whole, regardless of the form it takes (e.g., the editorial cartoon, the single-panel gag, the newspaper comic strip, the comic book, and the graphic novel). Furthermore, I use "graphic novel" to refer to long-form comics-as opposed to the typical American comic book which runs 32-36 pages-regardless of genre. This could include long works of fictional comics that are "novelistic" in scope, collected issues of previously published comic books or strips, comic memoirs, comics-based journalism, and even expository comics. 2Recenr books devoted solely to Jews and comics include Simcha Weinstein, Up, Up, and Oy

Kill Shakespeare – This Bard contains graphic language! by Mauro Gentile Today, the adaptation of Shakespeare plays into comic books or graphic novels appears to be a well-established literary practice in contemporary storytelling. As a matter of fact, Kill Shakespeare is inscribed within an ever-increasing circle of comics transpositions that can be considered almost a subgenre per se. This subgenre includes a wide range of Shakespearean adaptations, whose heterogeneity is determined by their intended readers, their graphic approaches, or their adherence to the source texts. On one hand, for instance, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1951), Hamlet (1952), and Macbeth (1955) were published in the Classic Illustrated series and were thought to be a way of drawing reluctant young readers to literature thanks to their visual appeal, whereas the re-interpretations of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1990) and The Tempest (1996) in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman were addressed to an adult audience. On the other, in the 1980s, Oval Projects, Ltd. adapted three Shakespearean plays “in strictly visual terms” (Versaci 2007:193), producing King Lear (1984), a graphic novel in which Ian Pollock’s illustrations stand out for their experimental stance while, in the 2000s, Self Made Hero published the Manga Shakespeare series, mixing Shakespeare and the Japanese comics style. Nevertheless, all these comic book adaptations are not just condensed versions of Shakespeare’s plays as they explore new spaces of interpretation of Shakespeare’s works. The word-image interplay is particularly appropriate to spotlight a new imagery dwelling on the margins of verbal language, revealing the flexible nature of comics language, usually imbued with intertextual elements and metanarrative connotations.
