  • Vivaldi Gloria and Imeneo Europa Galante
Vivaldi Gloria and Imeneo Europa Galante Martina Belli Léa Desandre Fabio Biondi Europa Galante Gloria e Imeneo is a serenata containing some of Vivaldi's finest music, alternating virtuosity with elegance, poignancy, and dramatic fervour comparable to his most compelling operas. Commissioned by the French Ambassador to commemorate the nuptials of Louis XV and the Polish princess Maria Leszczyska, Vivaldi’s work was first performed in 1725 in a loggia at the end of the garden at the ambassador’s residence in Venice, a building which still stands today as the Grand Hotel ‘Palazzo dei Dogi’. The two characters are Imeneo (Hymen, representing marriage) and La Gloria (Glory, the attribute of the French monarch). Throughout the work the two protagonists compete with each other in celebrating the radiant future of the French monarchy, and in congratulating the young royal couple in the most extravagant language each can muster. After competing with one another, the two soloists eventually join together and duet and the work climaxes with a final recitative: this celebration, sings La Gloria, will remain etched in human memory forever. The exceptionally high quality of the music features arias with tune-like qualities equivalent to the most unforgettable of Vivaldi’s concerto melodies. Recitatives are short and lively and they never distract from what was most important to the composer and his French sponsors: a solid hour of ravishing and exciting Baroque music. Orchestration: 2 soloists 15 musicians (Fabio Biondi + strings + harpsichord) For more information contact Vicky Shilling, Associate Director, International Touring [email protected] +44 (0)20 7608 9931.

Musical Criticism.com The new source for concert and opera reviews, articles and interviews on the web Mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux on her BBC Proms debut ‘Music has always been a huge part of my life.’ By Dominic McHugh July 30, 2009 We’re a couple of weeks into the BBC Proms now, but the excitement doesn’t stop. Next week, the BBC Philharmonic takes to the stage for two contrasting programmes, the second of which includes a concert of music with an Italian theme in tribute to the orchestra’s Principal Conductor, Gianandrea Noseda. The centrepiece of the concert is a two- aria performance by American mezzo- soprano Vivica Genaux, who has been dazzling audiences the world over with her baroque and bel canto performances. She’ll be singing two arias by Rossini: Angelina’s thrilling rondo-finale from La Cenerentola and Malcolm’s ‘Mura felici’ from La donna del lago. Genaux’s Proms debut is an important event for the mezzo, who I caught up with in advance of her appearance to ask about her preparations for the concert, as well as her forthcoming Vivaldi recordings. Photo Credit: Harry Heleotis To start, Genaux elaborates on the challenge of coming onstage and singing just two showcase arias, rather than a longer, mixed programme: ‘It used to be quite difficult for me because I was more accustomed to singing entire operas. The energy and concentration one uses for a concert are quite different, and I used to watch a lot of sports on TV to see how athletes prepared themselves for different events.

  • With an Utterly Unique Personal Narrative Beginning in Fairbanks
2016 – 2017 Season Biography [940 words] With an utterly unique personal narrative beginning in Fairbanks, Alaska, and an international career that now spans more than two decades, mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux charms audiences and critics alike with her charisma, commitment, and astounding vocal technique. After noting that she ‘has stage presence in spades,’ Clive Paget wrote in Australia’s Limelight Magazine in April 2016 that Vivica ‘demonstrated complete mastery with her exemplary phrasing and effortless vocal dexterity. Add to that a voice of great richness, easy at the top, yet with an ability to plunge at will into a beefy bottom register, and you have what can only be described as the real deal.’ Milwaukee, Wisconsin, witnessed her professional début in 1994, when she interpreted Isabella in a Florentine Opera production of Gioachino Rossini’s L’italiana in Algeri, a part that she reanimated to great acclaim in 2015 for Opera Fairbanks. Her 1997 début at New York’s Metropolitan Opera was in her most-performed rôle, Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, and she returned to the MET for more Rosinas in 2002. In the wake of those milestones, Rossini rôles have taken Vivica to opera houses and concert halls throughout the world. Her Angelina in La Cenerentola has been heard in her native United States in cities including Charlotte (North Carolina), West Palm Beach (Florida), and Washington, DC, and internationally in locations ranging from the prestigious Grand Théâtre de Genève, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, and Wiener Staatsoper to Bremen (Germany), Rieti (Italy), and Santiago (Chile). In addition to Angelina, she has sung another pair of her finest Rossini rôles for Washington Concert Opera, Falliero in Bianca e Falliero (2008) and Arsace in Semiramide (2015), as well as singing music from La donna del lago and Maometto secondo in the 2016 gala concert celebrating WCO’s thirtieth anniversary.
