  • The Route of Paul's Second Journey in Asia Minor
Tyndale Bulletin 67.2 (2016) 217-246 THE ROUTE OF PAUL’S SECOND JOURNEY IN ASIA MINOR IN THE STEPS OF ROBERT JEWETT AND BEYOND Glen L. Thompson and Mark Wilson ([email protected] and [email protected]) Summary Robert Jewett, in his 1997 article on Paul’s second journey, explored the geographical dimensions of Paul’s travel in north-west Asia Minor as described in Acts 16:6-8.1 His focus was to investigate thoroughly the road ‘down to Troas’ mentioned in verse 8. This study will not only renew that investigation from Dorylaeum where Jewett began it,2 but will also look at the earlier stages of the journey that began at Antioch on the Orontes. In so doing, it will examine the textual and material evidence that provides knowledge of the region’s road system. Regarding this route, Johnson observes: ‘Although endless scholarly discussion has been devoted to determining the precise route Paul took … it is in fact unsolvable.’3 Despite such a pessimistic perspective, hodological research in north-west Asia Minor in recent decades has provided fresh data to aid in evaluating alternative proposals for Paul’s 1 Robert Jewett, ‘Mapping the Route of Paul’s “Second Missionary Journey” from Dorylaeum to Troas’, Tyndale Bulletin 48.1 (1997), 1-22. • In Appreciation…
In Appreciation… One of the outstanding examples of success created through the cooperation of industrial establishments and non-governmental organizations in our country is the solidarity achieved between Philip Morris/Sabancı, The Aegean Foundation for Economic Development and The Association of Aegean Industrialists and Businessmen. Within the framework of the above mentioned cooperation, we launched the program entitled “The EU Training for the Aegean Opinion Leaders” as of 2005 and closely followed the developments related to the European Union Integration processes in the cities of Afyonkarahisar, Aydın, Balıkesir, Çanakkale, Denizli, İzmir, Kütahya, Manisa, Muğla and Uşak; realized impact analysis on the basis of sectors and shared our knowledge in seminars in which 3500 persons participated and also at “round-table” meetings. This book in your hands now, is another outcome of our cooperation. It is an end- product of the project on which The Aegean Foundation for Economic Development (EGEV) has been working since 2007. In this study, which we believe is a valuable reference source for the Aegean Region; Philip Morris / Sabancı, once again, in proof of its strong awareness of social responsibility, has not left us alone. On behalf of The Aegean Foundation for Economic Development (EGEV), we hereby express our boundless thanks and appreciation primarily to the Governorship of Izmir, Provincial Council General of Izmir and Presidentship of Izmir Municipality, to the Board of the Chairmen of Izmir Chambers, to all of our esteemed trustees, to all of the trainers who undertook responsibilities in the training program and to all of the participants for their presence and also for their intellectual support.

The Convention constitutes the legal framework of the Mediterranean Action Plan, one of the Regional Seas Programmes of the United Nations Environment Programme, which has been successfully implemented for a decade now. The Mediterranean Action Plan is a specific form of multidisciplinary cooperation among Mediterranean countries in the research, monitoring, protection and enhancement of the Mediterranean environment through a rational use and development of its resources. Such a cooperation can be developed only through a network of institutions and experts and a reliable information system. The Priority Actions Programme (PAP), one of the components of the Mediterranean Action Plan, initiated the preparation of Directories of Mediterranean Institutions and Experts in six selected priority areas, namely water resources management, renewable sources of energy, aquaculture, human settlements, soil protection and tourism. The first three Directories published in 1983 dealt with water resources management, renewable sources of energy and aquaculture. Information contained in this second group of Directories (human settlements, soil protection and tourism) has been compiled with the cooperation and help of a large number of experts, a majority of Mediterranean National Focal Points, and the Co-ordinating Unit for the Mediterranean Action Plan.

Corresponding author: *E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Turkey shows a notable diversity of habitats, with significant variations in altitude, rainfall, temperature, topography and geological history, which is reflected in its richness of biodiversity. Although there are quite a number of publications on the freshwater fish taxonomy, the data set for endemic freshwater fish as assemblages are poor. According to recent findings, a total of 194 endemic freshwater fish species are now recognised within the political boundaries of Turkey. Endemic fish consist of 47.4% of the Turkish freshwater ichthyofauna (409 species). At the family level, the Cyprinidae comprises the greatest number of endemic species (110 species; 56.7% of the endemic species), followed by the Nemacheilidae (31 species; 16.0%), Cyprinodontidae (18 species; 9.3%), Cobitidae (14 species; 7.2%), Salmonidae (12 species; 6.2%), Gobiidae (7 species; 3.6%), Petromyzontidae (1 species; 0.5%) and Clupeidae (1 species; 0.5%). A total of 143 species (73.71%) are found within a single basin. Considering species diversity, the Konya endorheic basin (64.10%) is the richest in endemics, followed by Burdur (52.38%), Büyük Menderes (40.28%), Van Gölü (38.46%) and Antalya (34.00%).

  • And the Route of Paul's Third Journey from Apamea to Ephesus
Scriptura 117 (2018:1), pp. 1-21 http://scriptura.journals.ac.za http://dx.doi.org/10.7833/117-1-1368 THE ‘UPPER REGIONS’ AND THE ROUTE OF PAUL’S THIRD JOURNEY FROM APAMEA TO EPHESUS Mark Wilson Stellenbosch University Abstract Luke’s phrase ἀνωτερικὰ μέρη in Acts 19:1 has been an interpretative conundrum for scholars of Acts for centuries. How Paul came to Ephesus at the start of the third journey is the geographical issue. The article begins with a brief lexical discussion. It then examines each of the proposed routes and their variants. Recent archaeological and hodological research in western Asia Minor as well as new cartographic productions provide fresh insights into these routes. How contemporary Bible atlases portray the route of the journey is then discussed. The methodological tools of Least Cost Path Analysis, Network Analysis, and 3D modelling are next employed to evaluate these routes. Based on these data, the Meander valley route from Apamea to Ephesus is preferred. The article concludes with several insights about Paul’s travel and ministry programme in Acts derived from the study. Key Words: Paul’s Third Journey; Ephesus; Apamea; Roman Roads; Meander River Introduction1 Paul stopped briefly in Ephesus on the return portion of his second journey. Ephesus was probably the intended destination for this journey, but at its beginning the Holy Spirit prevented him from preaching in Asia (Acts 16:6).2 Now over two years later the apostle arrived in the capital of Asia to an already functioning church. There he left Priscilla and Aquila and visited the synagogue where he was invited to stay and teach (Acts 18:19-21a).
