In the Final “Book ’em Danno.” Analysis — Steve McGarrett, Five-O JO Many, many years ago when I was still a youngster, one of those forbidden television fruits that infatuated my pre-teen mind was the gritty cop drama Hawaii Five-O. The show centered 184 Thorn Hill Road around a special police unit based in Honolulu and led by a man with the most perfectly Warrendale, PA 15086, USA quaffed hair on television, Steve McGarrett (played by the splendidly two-dimensional actor Telephone: (724) 776-9000 ). McGarrett’s unit battled all manner of unredeemable bad guys, and I loved every Fax: (724) 776-3770 lurid minute of it. Best part? Whenever McGarrett bagged the ne’er-do-well of the week and Web: jom.tms.org uttered his signature “Book’em Danno” to, well, Danno. Aside from the action-adventure stories E-Mail: [email protected] and the memorably percussive theme song, the show was also an incredible advertisement for the Hawaiian tourism bureau. Even on our 16” black-and-white Zenith, the locations looked PUBLISHER James J. Robinson fabulous. Little did I realize back in those days that I’d be taking my first trip to the 50th state as MARCH GUEST EDITORS TMS executive director to help the society host the upcoming 8th Pacific Rim International Interphase Defects, Structures, and Phase Stability Conference on Advanced Materials and Processing (PRICM-8, for short). This intensely Chemistry and Physics of Materials Committee international conference will be held August 4–9 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the “big Xiang-Yang (Ben) Liu, island” of Hawaii. PRICM is an event worthy of such a “destination” location. This triennial Los Alamos National Laboratory conference rotates hosting duties and host countries among five societies: the Chinese Society Modeling Mechanical Behavior of for Metals, the Japan Institute of Metals, the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials, Materials Ultrafine-Grained Polycrystals Australia, and TMS, which represents the remainder of the world. Three years ago, Materials Nanomechanical Materials Behavior Committee Australia performed a remarkable job with PRICM-7, attracting more than 1,000 attendees Jian Wang, Los Alamos National Laboratory to Cairns, Australia. Our goal for 2013 is to attract at least as many enthusiastic attendees. EDITORIAL STAFF So far, so good. As I write, there are still three more weeks of abstract collection to perform, Maureen Byko, Editor and already we have in the vicinity of 1,600 abstracts submitted to date. That’s a remarkable Shirley A. Litzinger, Production Editor number. Cheryl M. Geier, Senior Graphic Designer Immeasurable credit for promising early indicators goes to the efforts of the remarkably Ken Grzegorczyk, Web Developer dedicated organizing team, with sub-teams from each country working hard to assure a representative turn out from each region. The PRICM organizing structure is rather formal CONTRIBUTING WRITER Lynne Robinson and complex (I was in need of Cliff Notes in the early going as I familiarized myself with the warp and woof of the organizing culture). The key players for PRICM-8 are the Conference ADVERTISING STAFF Honorary Chair and TMS President Elizabeth Holm (Carnegie Mellon University) and the Caron Gavrish, Sales Specialist very hard-working Conference Organizing Chair Fernand Marquis (Naval Postgraduate School).
