XIV, 2006, pp. 225-237) 1. Una premessa metodologica: il paesaggio “topica” Sul n. 3/2005 del “Bollettino della Società Geografica Italiana” ho proposto una interpretazione del paesaggio inteso come dispositivo fondato anche su modelli linguistici e retorici paragonabili e funzionanti come una “topica”, cioè come repertorio di informazioni capaci di trasmettere di generazione in generazione i valori socialmente condivisi di un territorio. Secondo questa interpretazione il paesaggio reale funziona in maniera non troppo differente da quello rappresentato nella pittura e nella cartografia. La percezione del paesaggio e la ricezione sociale dei suoi valori non sono così dirette come si crede, ma sono mediate dal linguaggio. I luoghi vengono cioè utilizzati come veicoli per comunicare narrazioni, informazioni, necessariamente filtrate dai sistemi del controllo sociale che influiscono, in quanto topiche, cioè in quanto repertori di modelli da imitare, sul comportamento. In quanto scrigno della memoria (come accadeva per i giardini “delle rimembranze”), il paesaggio funziona così come simbolo e veicolo dell’identità, individuale e collettiva. François Walter ha cercato di ricostruire in questa stessa prospettiva, nel suo libro Les figures paysagères de la nation, il ruolo strategico svolto dal paesaggio nella costruzione delle identità nazionali.
