2018 was a wonderful year as we created the new Beaumont Ward on the 5 March 2018 from parts of Mogul Ward and Peavine Mountain Wards. We are a small ward (250 members) but have outstanding active families and individuals. Our attendance is in the 50% and 60% range.

We have a large and spiritual group of young men and young women (about 50) who love the Lord and love each other. We have had two youth join the church this past year.

We have grown together with love and service to each other and trust the Lord to guide and bless us. We know as we continue to serve the Lord that the individuals and families in our ward will be blessed.

Below is a list of missionaries that have served from our ward during 2108. And young men eagle scouts who were living in the ward during 2018. We have a number of youth that are ready to receive their eagle awards, receive the young women recognition awards and serve missions in 2019.

Sister Lorna Whaley was our Primary President. There were 35 Primary children, including Nursery, with 11 teachers. In January, our music leader, Jon Orgill, challenged our Primary to memorize “The Living Christ” document. Interestingly enough, that same week, the Stake Relief Society President also challenged the sisters in our stake to memorize the same document. Then, a week or so later, our stake youth leaders also challenged our young men and young women to memorize “The Living Christ” before their Trek. This challenge within our Reno Stake was truly meant to be. It blessed lives and blessed families, and our music leader had no idea that the other auxiliaries had planned the same challenge. On March 25th, almost all of the ward boundaries in Reno Stake were realigned and renamed. Peavine Mountain Ward was trisected and each section was added upon from parts of Mogul and/or Sierra Highlands wards. The northern most ward is called Peavine Valley Ward. Eight of our original Primary children were now in their ward. The southern ward is called Canyon Creek. Nine of our original Primary children were now in that ward. That left us with 18 children in our newly named Beaumont Ward, which sits geographically in between Peavine Valley and Canyon Creek wards. Beaumont also gained 21 children from the western mid- section of Mogul ward which is now in Beaumont Ward. This created a kaleidoscope of three new Primarys in three new wards in NW Reno. Sister Lorna Whaley was now in Canyon Creek ward. In fact, most of the original Primary teachers and leaders were also in other wards now. Beaumont Ward had only four teachers, one activity day leader, and two cub scout leaders to serve a new total of 39 children. This also marked the beginning of a two-week spring break for our local school , and General Conference the following weekend. For better or for worse, our wards had two weeks to reassemble everything before anyone could be officially sustained in church. Andrea Neahusan became Beaumont Ward’s Primary President. Even with the new two-adults-per-classroom guideline, all of the Primary positions quickly got filled. This boundary realignment has really unified the three wards that share the Robb Drive church building. We all have parts and pieces of each other now. We all have friendships and emotional/spiritual investments in each other. This attachment helped greatly for our three Primarys to work together to form a tri-ward Cub Scout program from that point forward which works fairly well, thanks to the efforts of many leaders from each ward. This combined pack provides enough boys at each level of scouting for fun synergy in the dens. It also gives us a big enough resource from which to pool together 9 Scout leaders to make the program happen. June was a big month for our scouts. On June 8-9, our 11 year old scouts attended Helaman’s Camp. This was the first year each stake in our ran their Helaman’s Camps separately. Beaumont ward had five boys participate. It was a great event, especially considering many of the scout leaders were new as of April. Two weeks later we had four Beaumont boys participate in Cub Scout Day Camp at Davis Creek Regional Park. Many were unable to attend because of summer scheduling conflicts. It was a successful event for those in attendance. On September 23rd the Primary presented their Sacrament Program. The program reviewed the songs and the “Choose the Right” theme that the children had learned about in Sharing time all year. Many of the older children shared some of their own personal stories and testimonies over the pulpit. It was a powerful program. Perhaps almost as big as the ward realignments in March, were the announcements made in October general conference. We are excited for the home-centered, church supported approach for 2019. This meant Primary had some priority shifts as well. We spent the last two months of the year gearing up for the new “Come, Follow Me” curriculum. Then the last big announcement of the year happened on December 14th. Our current 11 year olds will no longer be part of Primary. This is bittersweet for our organization. We are thrilled for them, but sad to see them go and will miss their strength and examples in Primary. The Sunday after this announcement, we recited the Article of Faith of the month, which happened to be number 9, all about revelation. This was not a coincidence. We chatted together about how we were living the words in this Article of Faith right now. So many recent revelations from our Prophet were directly affecting them right now. I testified to them that God knew that they were ready for a higher bar. They were ready to attend the temple and be ordained to the Aaronic priesthood. They have been prepared well in their families and in their years in Primary. Because of these changes, there will be no Valiant 11 class or 11 year-old scouts in 2019. We ended 2018 with 43 total Primary children and 10 teachers.

The year 2018 could be termed “The Year of Change”. Before 2018, the Beaumont ward did not even exist. However, the creation of a new ward, with some young men leaving and others coming, is minor when looking at the list of many changes that occurred throughout the year. Below is a list of changes that directly affected the young men’s organization:

- President Monson passed away and a new First Presidency was organized with Pres. Nelson being sustained as prophet, seer, and revelator. President Nelson implemented many church- wide changes. - President Nelson held a church-wide fireside focused on the youth of the church. The youth were invited to understand and participate in the literal gathering of Israel. - The Reno Nevada stake reorganized wards within its boundaries including new ward boundaries, the creation of a new ward, and renaming existing wards. As a ward, we lost some young men and added others with the overall number of young men being relatively the same. - Missionary interview and recommendation process was updated allowing young men to expedite the process and receive a call more efficiently. One young man in the ward recently went through the process and received a call to serve in Puerto Rico. - We no longer refer to ourselves as “”. The young men are being encouraged to say they are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in order to place more emphasis on who is at the head of the church they belong to. - Home Teaching was replaced with . Many of the young men have been called to serve as ministering brothers. - The High Priest Group was combined with the Elders Quorum to create one Elders Quorum. After graduating high school, a few of the young men chose to alternate weeks between attending Priests Quorum and Elders Quorum. This proved to be a learning and growing experience for these young men. - The church wide meeting schedule was announced to a 2-hour block with priesthood quorums meeting every other week. We adjusted lesson schedules and quorum meetings accordingly. The young men are encouraged to use the new “Come Follow Me” curriculum to use the extra time on Sundays to study the gospel with their families in the home. - The young men now advance to the next priesthood office in January of the year that they will turn 12, 14, or 16. This didn’t affect our priest’s quorum, but was a big boost to the teacher’s and deacon’s quorums for our 2019 quorums. This change has collectively had the greatest positive impact on our young men’s program and has allowed more young men opportunities to participate in responsibilities specific to their priesthood office. It has been a great experience watching the young men step up and meet the challenges of their new responsibilities.

Other activities specific to the ward include the following:

- Marcus Layosa earned his Eagle Scout award, graduated high school and is currently serving a in Mexico. - Spencer Maloy earned his Eagle Scout award, graduated from high school, is currently attending BYU-Hawaii, and recently received a call to serve as a missionary in Puerto Rico. - Justin Thompson earned his Eagle Scout award, graduated high school and is currently working to save money for missionary service. - Alexander Olson graduated high school and is currently working to save money for missionary service. - Tyson Freeze, who is already an Eagle Scout, graduated high school, is currently attending University of Nevada, Reno, and recently received a call to serve as a missionary in Des Moines, IA. - Carter Moore, who is already an Eagle Scout, graduated high school, is currently attending BYU- Hawaii, and is waiting on his call to missionary service. - Micah Hill earned his Eagle Scout award. - Many of the scouts attended a week-long camp at Camp Fleishman participating in activities which included but is not limited to swimming, rock climbing, archery, rifle shooting, wilderness survival, and flag ceremonies. - The older scouts attended a high adventure trip which included camping on Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay, walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, and hiking approximately 40 miles along the California coast. - Other activities included temple baptisms, weekend campouts during different seasons of the year, trip to Lake Tahoe, combined mutual activities, combined social activities, career nights, service at a local food pantry, visit to the local University, learning new games, and family history training. - Quorum presidencies have taken responsibility of assigning quorum lessons, coordinating the preparation, blessing, and passing of the , planning weekly activities, fast offerings, weekly announcements, and extending friendship to each individual quorum member.

Overall, 2018 was successful year filled with uplifting and faith-promoting activities which encouraged faith and growth in each of the young men. We look forward to greater improvement in 2019.

Thanks.

Relief Society 2018 Ward History

Since we have combined wards in March of last year we have done a few activities.

In August we had a salad social at the Earl’s where everyone that participated brought their favorite salad. It was good to get together and get to know people.

In September we did a “speed friendship” activity were we all took turns in a quick manner getting to know the person that was in front of us. We had yummy pumpkin desserts that night.

We also had the stake RS retreat up at Tahoe in September. We had a nice program at the Tahoe Ward building and then paddle boarded in Lake Tahoe. We had a nice picnic provided by the stake also.

In October we got together and finished projects that we had started on our own time. We also had Marilyn Johnson bring blankets for us to tie edges of if we didn’t bring our own project to work on. Apples and caramel dip, vegetables and cookies were there too!

We took November and December off due to Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

History of the missionary work in the Beaumont Ward for 2018 By Robert Craig Eyre, Ward Mission Leader

We established the Ward Mission Statement: Everyone Needs: A friend A responsibility Nourishment by the Good Word of God. We out lined activities first for the Ward Council and asked them to set an example. Then we shared the mission statement and activities with the ward members through the members of the Ward Council. The plan was typed and handed out through the Priesthood and Auxiliary leaders in the Council. This has not gone forth as well as planned. People are reluctant to open their mouths. We teach the members to Share the gospel by example and serve to others. We seek Referrals from member who are the finders in the mission. The full time missionaries are here to teach. We have divided up each week of the year for the Priesthood and Auxiliaries for Splits with missionaries. This has gone well with the member’s good support and attendance. The Ward Missionaries went out weekly to visit less active members and investigators. Brother Alex Leon will be baptized next year. And his wife will be baptized soon. We held Weekly Missionary correlation meetings. Where reports and assignments are exchanged. Our plan for the New Year is to hand out copies of the Book of Mormon for the members to share with friends and neighbors, then report their experience back to us. The Stake has a meeting quarterly where all missionaries and those who have a stewardship over missionary work in the stake are to attend We have periodically a “Why I Believe” fireside In the region where we can attend and bring friends.
