There was an incredible doctor who was world renowned Even as fall is in the air and the park season will be coming to an end, I feel that I must address and had an unbelievable track record of never losing a single patient, before, during or after any of his surgeries. He had the following issue. While you, the parents, take your kids to the park, feel free to sit and an entire state-of-the-art wing of a hospital named after him. One day a very sick child with a terrible illness was brought schmooze with other parents, but never ever take your eyes off of your children. He reassured the nurses that there was nothing to worry about even though his temperature continued to rise. A few hours later the child was nifter. After hearing this, the doctor was devastated. He went to the hospital to collect all of his belongings and resign. No matter how his colleagues tried to convince him to stay, his mind was made up. He was Dear TFM, adamant that he had to resign. From the editor's desk

“Honey, please pass the apple.” Is this what Adam said to Eve on the very first Rosh Hashana of the world? Is that why Jews have been dipping apples into honey on the first night of Rosh Hashana for so many years? I don’t think so. In fact, the apple has gotten a “bad rap”. The Gemara, when discussing which fruit was actually growing on the Eitz HaDaas (Tree of Knowledge), suggests three possibilities: wheat, figs or grapes. There is NO Talmudic opinion that even mentions an apple as the fruit that Adam and Eve ate. The Zohar suggests that the fruit of the Eitz HaDaas was an esrog. An esrog was sometimes referred to as a “golden apple” (just like potatoes which are referred to as fruit of the ground). Could that be why people think Adam and Eve sinned with an apple? More likely is the Medrash which suggests that the fruit on the Tree of Knowledge was in fact an apple. For some inexplicable reason, Christian Bible Scholars decided to take that opinion (over any of the more authoritative Talmudic opinions) and run with it. Hence the Adam & Eve Apple Sin. But, anyway, why would we use something associated with a sin, as a symbol for a sweet new year? Simple people may suggest that an apple was used on Rosh Hashana because that was a sweet fruit and it was easily accessible. So for purely “practical” reasons, the apple became the centre of this beautiful minhag (custom) of representing our wish, on the very first evening of the New Year, that we be blessed with all good and “sweet” things. Ok, that works, but it is so…simple. Actually, the apple has some very deep and traditional significances. In Bereishis, when Yaakov comes to Yitzchack for a bracha, Yitzchock says that he smells like “the fragrance of a field, which G-d has blessed!” The meforshim interpret this as an apple orchard, as that is the scent of Gan Eden! In fact, in Kabbalah, Gan Eden is referred to as “Chakal Tapuchin Kadishin” – the Holy Apple Orchard. Shlomo HaMelech, the wisest man of all, uses the apple, not once, but twice, in Shir HaShirim to express the closeness of the bond that the nation of Israel has with Hashem. In Chapter 2 he writes “As the apple is rare and unique among the trees of the forest, so is my beloved (Israel) amongst the maidens (nations) of the world.” Later, in Chapter 8, he writes, “Beneath the apple tree I aroused You[r love]”. In gematria (numerology of Hebrew words), the Hebrew word for apple (tapuach) has the same numerological value as the word akeida (“bindng” of Yitzchack), which we also read about in the Torah on the second day of Rosh Hashana. Finally, the Medrash tells us that unlike other fruit bearing trees, the apple tree brings out its fruit even before the leaves that will eventually protect it. This compares to the nation of Israel, who accepted the Torah of Hashem by saying “We will do and we will hear”, even before they knew what the Torah would require them to do. Now, THOSE are reasons for dipping an apple, aren’t they? Perhaps this year you will have a bit more to think about as you savour the sweet taste of the apple and the honey! But, why honey? Let’s save that discussion for next year! Best wishes for a k’siva v’chasima tova!

know firsthand from hundreds of conferences and speaking events that people miss tremendous opportunities simply because they are unaware of the way to best use their I time while they are there. While some of the tips I’m going to share with you may be obvious (and other tips almost heretical), I strongly encourage you to read this from beginning to end. I don’t expect you to follow all of my suggestions, but I do suggest you use whatever nuggets resonate with you. • Don’t attend all of the sessions if you don’t need what is being discussed. Use that time to meet new people, or review your notes from another session in case you get to meet the presenters and ask them questions. • Ignore your friends and ignore people in your industry. "All the books and courses won't help, if a person doesn't work on himself while trying to apply chinuch methods to his child." (With Hearts Full of Love) Any and all problem should come as a wake-up call to do teshuva. If you try to solve it in a typical way, the outward manifestation of the problem might disappear but it will show up again in a different way. When it comes to education, you have to improve yourself first. This has two benefits. Firstly, it allows you to solve your own problems and secondly, your child will improve. He also says that if you want to give someone $100 and you only have $10, no matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to give $100. For example, if we didn't yet master patience and we sometimes get 12*24 12*48 24*24 24*48 angry, we can't help our child stay calm when he's angry. "If we live it we can give it." The reason why a book from a gadol hador is not like any other, besides for being from a daas $20.99 $26.99 $30.99 $37.99 Torah, is that it goes to the root of the problem. He doesn't just tell us the do's and don'ts of raising children – he gives us the key to the root of the matter - that our kids are here to teach us and help us mold our character and get close to Hashem by working on ourselves and davening to him. When it is a Torah book, the different can complement and prove each other’s points - but it’s all one Torah. 36*36 48*48 72*48 Everyone knows the pasuk, "Chochmah baGoyim taamin”, roughly translated as there is wisdom $44.99 $63.99 $88.99 among the nations, but don't believe that there is Torah among the nations. We have it. So why don't we use it? Torah can and should be used on a practical level. Another one of the important points he mentions is, "Tehillim and treirin". This famous quote from the Brisker Rav means Tehillim and tears. Without hearts filled with tefillah, there is no way that we will be able raise our children properly. 25 647-773-3000 [email protected] Inc. Seven o’clock sharp.” Sarah is 18 years old. She plans to go into the writing field professionally. Michael gave him a huge smile. “Wear anything you want. We’re going to have a grand old time.” When Eli got to the clubhouse, everything seemed great. Some of the guys were playing Monopoly. A few others were munching popcorn and watching. “Hi, Brian, Rick, Bob, Zack,” said Eli. The boys shook hands and slapped him on the back. He sat down and made himself comfortable. That night, Daniel ordered pizza—two slices for each boy! He paid for the whole thing from the club’s cash fund. Eli wondered again why he hadn’t been asked to contribute to the fund, but he pushed the thought aside. He wanted to enjoy himself, not spend time worrying. At nine o’clock Eli left for home. Tonight was the greatest, he thought. He wished the club could meet every night. Having a great time with your friends, going to school and feeling important, having pizza—this was really living! Eli couldn’t think of anything better in the whole world. funny The weekend went by quickly. Eli was looking forward to going back to school. When he sat down to eat breakfast on Monday morning, though, a small article in the newspaper caught his eye. Suddenly he choked on his cereal. The article was a report on some unsolved robberies that were being pics: investigated by the police. The addresses of the houses where the robberies took place were the same as the addresses of the houses they had been to just a few weeks ago. Eli walked to school in a daze. By now it was clear that his friends were thieves. And if they were, so was he. Daniel had handed him a bag to carry back to the clubhouse. Eli had actually helped steal other people’s possessions. Eli had a heavy heart and a pretty bad stomach ache, but he cheered up a bit when he got to school and everyone there was nice to him. He felt very important. Maybe the rest of it didn’t matter after all. But, as the day wore on, he knew he couldn’t continue this way. He was beginning to hate himself. He didn’t go directly to Daniel himself to ask for a meeting, but asked Michael to ask for him. After class it was Rick who came to tell Eli to meet Daniel behind the school. Again Eli was scared. He knew Daniel would threaten him again, even more than he had before, but he didn’t care. He didn’t think Daniel would have the nerve to hit him, even if he wanted to and he had decided, at long last, that he wasn’t going to be staying in this gang.
