Rabbi Yisroel Belsky was the Senior Halachic Consultant for the OU where he served in that capacity for twenty eight years along with ybl”ch Rabbi Herschel Schachter and Rabbi Menachem Genack. Rabbi Belsky was also the Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath as well as the Rav and director of Torah programming in Camp Agudah for decades. He was 77 years old and received his smicha from both Yeshiva Torah Vodaath and Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l. For the most part, it ignores the doctrines, faith, and practices of Orthodox Jews, and barely touches upon synagogue hie, which is the most meaningful expression of American Orthodoxy. It is hoped that the reader will find here some appreciation of the vitality of American Orthodoxy. Earlier predictions of the demise of 11 am indebted to many people who assisted me in making this essay possible. More than 40, active in a variety of Orthodox organizations, gave freely of their time for extended discussions and interviews and many lay leaders and rabbis throughout the United States responded to a mail questionnaire. A number of people read a draft of this paper. I would be remiss if I did not mention a few by name, at the same time exonerating them of any responsibility for errors of fact or for my own judgments and interpretations. The section on modern Orthodoxy was read by Rabbi Emanuel Rackman. The sections beginning with the sectarian Orthodox to the conclusion of the paper were read by Rabbi Nathan Bulman. Criticism and comments on the entire paper were forthcoming from Rabbi Aaron Lichtenstein, Dr. Marshall Ski are, and Victor Geller, without whose assistance the section on the number of Orthodox Jews could not have been written.

ww ww VOL. y h / NO. 7 IYAR 5771 / MAY 2011 s xc THEDaf a K ashrus a monthlyH newsletter for th e o U r a bb inic field representative DAF NOTES On Sunday, March 27, for the first time, the Harry H. Beren ASK OU OUTREACH Kashrut Shiurim were presented to the Sephardic community at Bnei Shaare Zion in Brooklyn, NY. The OU Poskim, Rav Hershel Schachter and Rav Yisroel Belsky, both discussed the current Pesach status of enriched white rice for those who are permitted to eat Kitniyot on Pesach. These discussions sparked much interest in the Sephardic community. Although by now, Pesach is behind us, the Daf feels it important to share with its readers the research Rabbi Gavriel Price has made on this subject in the article below, as well as the accompanying Teshuva written by Rav Schachter Shlita. Rav Schachter writes in his Teshuva that the potential Chametz in rice that is produced by several major US manufacturers would be Botul before Pesach. How- ever, it is proper for Sephardim to wash the rice to remove the possible Chametz in the added vitamins. It is preferable for Sephardim to use any unprocessed brown rice or white rice with an acceptable Kosher L’Pesach certification as found in Eretz Yisroel, for those permitted to eat Kitniyot. Please refer to the Teshuva for the reasons Rav Schachter gives for these Psokim. Parboiled, pre-cooked, boil-in-a-bag, and converted rice are either pesach statUs naturally enriched or use a special method of enrichment that will of enriched white rice not be discussed here.

The positions included: • R’ Elyahu Mizrachi (15C Turkey) - kabbalistic concepts are highly esoteric and, although special individuals are free to adopt them, ordinary people are not required to follow them. • Radvaz (16C Egypt) - kabbalistic practices are acceptable as chumrot, but not where they contradict the Talmud. • Beit Yosef (16C Eretz Yisrael) - incorporates selected halachot of the Zohar into the mainstream halacha. Where the Zohar conflicts with Talmud, the Talmud prevails. However, where the Zohar conflicts with the post-talmudic poskim, the Zohar prevails. • The Rema (16C Poland) - disagrees with the Beit Yosef on the latter point. According to the Rema, the Zohar cannot even override the post-talmudic poskim. • The Maharshal (16C Poland) - is concerned in many cases about the problems of integrating kabbala into halacha. • The Maseit Binyamin (17C Poland) - considers that the Zohar outweighs all the post-Talmudic poskim put together! • R. Ya’akov Emden (18C Germany) - whilst skeptical about the origins of every word of the Zohar, maintains that, although in any dispute between the Zohar and the Bavli we follow the Bavli, where the Bavli is unclear and subject to many interpretations and the Zohar can clarify the position, we are to look to the Zohar. The Zohar should not be rejected in halacha, provided it does not directly contradict the Bavli and we should try wherever possible to reconcile the Zohar and the Bavli.

Torah.org Rightfully Mine The Judaism Site https://torah.org/learning/integrity-mine/ RIGHTFULLY MINE by Rabbi Daniel Travis And there was a quarrel between the herdsmen of Avram and the herdsmen of Lot. And the Canaanites and the Perizites were then living in the land. (Bereshith 13:7) Lot's herdsmen were wicked, and allowed their cattle to graze in others' fields. When Avraham's herdsmen rebuked them they responded, "This land has been given to Avraham. Since he has no heir, Lot is his heir, so this is not robbery at all!" However, the Torah makes it clear that Avraham was not yet entitled to possession of the land, for it states that the Canaanites and the Perizites were still living in the land.(1) Some people are scrupulous about theft from non-relatives, but when it comes to family members, anything goes!(2) In truth, even if one is a rightful heir to another's property, he has no right to take it. Being a future inheritor does not make the property yours now. An estate remains exclusively the property of the original owner as long as he is alive. One who takes something that is bequeathed to him while the owner is alive has violated the prohibition of theft.(3) What's more, he is even worse than a normal thief as the verse in Mishlei says, "Someone who steals from his father and mother and denies that he has committed a crime is a companion of vandals."(4) This is because he should be doing the opposite: safeguarding his parents' money and honoring them with his own money.(5) We must be especially careful about items we feel are "coming to us." If someone accustoms himself to taking things he feels he has a right to, he can easily fall into theft.

Indeed, it is not only the experience of the ceremonies of the Chag that make them exciting. Rather, when we analyze, consider and discuss why we do what we do when we do it, we become more aware of the purposes of the Mitzvos and the holiday and become closer to Hashem in the process. In the days of old, the public shiurim of Yom Tov were a major part of the celebration.
