Lost in the Woods Kristen-Anderson Lopez, from II

Waving Through a Window Benj Pasek, from Come raggio di sol Antonio Caldara resided in Venice, Italy. The intention of this composition is to reveal the anguish that inhabits a smiling face.

Come raggio di sol mite e sereno Like a ray of sunshine, gentle and serene, sovra placidi flutti si riposa Resting on the peaceful waves, mentre del mare nel profondo seno While in the deep bosom of the sea sta la tempesta ascosa. The storm is hidden.

Così riso talor gaio e pacato So much laughter, gay and calm, di contento, di gioia un labbro infiora, Of happiness, of joy, a lip like a flower, mentre nel suo segreto il cor piagato While in secret the tormented heart s'angoscia e si martora. Anguishes and martyrs itself.

Non siate ritrosi This piece originates in the opera Cosi Fan Tutti. The premise of the opera are two men who wager that their wives will be eternally faithful even when tested. They disguise themselves and in this particular piece, are attempting to woo their wives under the guise of other men with their manly triumphs of mustaches!

Non siate ritrosi, We’re crazy but we’re charming, Occhietti vezzosi; We’re strong and well made, Due lampi amorosi And as anyone can see, Vibrate un po' qua. Whether by merti or by chance, We’ve good feet, Felici rendeteci, Good eyes, good noses. Amate con noi; Look, good feet, note, good eyes, E noi felicissime Touch, good noses; take stock of us; Faremo anche voi. And these moustaches Could be called Guardate, Toccate, Manly triumphs, Il tutto osservate: The plumage of love. Siam forti e ben fatti, E come ognun vede, Be not wayward, Sia merito caso, Dear beguiling eyes; Abbiamo bel piede, Let two loving lightning flashes Bell'occhio, bel naso; Strike for a moment here. Make us happy, Guardate, bel piede, osservate, bell'occhio, And love with us; Toccate, bel naso, il tutto osservate: And we will make you in return The happiest of women. E questi mustacchi Look at us, Chiamare si possono Touch us, Trionfi degli uomini, Take stock of us. Pennacchi d'amor.

Widmung This stunning 3/2 piece remains a staple for piano/vocal recitals since its birth in 1840. When Robert Schumann composed this, he dedicated it to his soon-to-be wife, Clara, as a wedding gift. Schumann echoes the importance of Clara in this song by professing she is his entire world and that she brings out the best version of himself.

Du meine Seele, du mein Herz, You my soul, you my heart, Du meine Wonn’, o du mein Schmerz, You my rapture, O you my pain, Du meine Welt, in der ich lebe, You my world in which I live, Mein Himmel du, darein ich schwebe, My heaven you, to which I aspire, O du mein Grab, in das hinab O you my grave, into which Ich ewig meinen Kummer gab! My grief forever I’ve consigned! Du bist die Ruh, du bist der Frieden, You are repose, you are peace, Du bist vom Himmel mir beschieden. You are bestowed on me from heaven. Dass du mich liebst, macht mich mir wert, Your love for me gives me my Dein Blick hat mich vor mir verklärt, worth, Du hebst mich liebend über mich, Your eyes transifgure me in mine, Mein guter Geist, mein bess’res Ich! You raise me lovingly above myself, My guardian angel, my better self!

Nacht und Traume This composition could be described as slightly meditational, reflecting on stars and dreams. Franz Schubert cunningly switches to the key of G Major in the middle of the song, while the beginning and end is set in B major. This piece is slow and somber, which fits the ending as sorrow arrives when the day awakes, because dreams are disseminated as the sunlight breaks through.

Heil’ge Nacht, du sinkest nieder; Holy night, you sink down; Nieder wallen auch die Träume dreams, too float down, Wie dein Mondlicht durch die Räume, like your moonlight through space, Durch der Menschen stille Brust. through the silent hearts of men. Die belauschen sie mit Lust; They listen with delight, Rufen, wenn der Tag erwacht: crying out when day awakes: Kehre wieder, heil’ge Nacht! come back, holy night! Holde Träume, kehret wieder! Fair dreams, return!

La belle table est mise A lesser known carol by Frederic Mistral, La belle depicts the joys of youthful living while musically it is gloomy, representing that the author of the song is old and reminiscing on younger, more vibrant times.

La belle table est mise Beneath the verdant arbor De sous les abres vert The table glistens bright Lamour et la jeunesse For love and youth together Ont pare les couvert Have laid the cloth so white Les pauvres vieux qui sont on purgatoire The aged fold know not the joy of living Au coin duh feu e pient But peering from the fireside Les jeunes qui sont rois They see that youth is king Les jeunes qui sont rois They see that youth is king

Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’ Rogers and Hammersteins first ever musical composing together, the musical Oklahoma, was an instantaneous hit. The character Curly McLain opens up the production with singing Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin, establishing him as the highly charming and charismatic lead character. Curly lives in his own world for the duration of this piece, as he sings of meadows, cattle, and trees, all the while dancing in the middle of a farm that is owned by the girl he loves, Laurey.

There's a bright golden haze on the meadow, Oh what a beautiful morning, There's a bright golden haze on the meadow, Oh what a beautiful day, The corn is as high as an elephant's eye, I’ve got a wonderful feeling, An' it looks like its climbin' clear up to the sky. Everything’s going my way.

Oh what a beautiful morning, All the sounds of the earth are like music, Oh what a beautiful day, All the sounds of the earth are like music, I've got a wonderful feeling, The breeze is so busy it don’t miss a tree, Everything's going my way. And an ol’ Weepin’ Willer is laughin’ at me.

All the cattle are standing like statues, Oh what a beautiful morning, All the cattle are standing like statues, Oh what a beautiful day, They don't turn their heads as they see me ride I’ve got a wonderful feeling, by. Everything’s going my way. But a little brown mav'rick is winking her eye. Oh what a beautiful day

Bless Your Beautiful Hide Composed for the musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Rogers and Hammerstein score again with the bizarre, yet charming production of seven brothers who are savage and grizzly in manner, but are socially and romantically coached by a lovely, upstanding woman, Milly. The set opens with Adam Pontipee on a mission. He is on the search for a wife and confidently walks around the town looking for his prize.

Bless your beautiful hide, wherever you may Bless your beautiful hide, prepare to bend be your keen We ain't met yet but I'm a-willing to bet And take that vow ‘cause I’m a-tellin’ you You're the gal for me now You’re the gal for me Bless your beautiful hide You're just as good as lost Pretty and trim but kinda slim I don't know your name but I'm a-stakin' my Bossy and bold but not too old claim Simple and sweet and sassy as can be! Lest your eyes is crossed Bless your beautiful hide, wherever you may be Oh, I'd swap my gun and I'd swap my mule Though whoever took it would be one big fool Pretty and trim but not too slim Or pay your way through cookin' school Bossy and bold but not not too old If'n you would say “I Do” Simple and sweet, and sassy as can be! Bless your beautiful hide Yes you’re the gal for me!

Stranger Based on the movie released in 2003, Big Fish (the musical) debuted on broadway in 2013 and was met with mixed reviews, but still was deemed an overall positive, family-friendly, clean story. Big Fish is a tale about a father and a son, Edward and Will. Edward raised Will with stories that were entertaining, fanciful, but cleary mythical. At some point, Will becomes an adult and recognizes his father’s game. Will becomes estranged from his father, but after marrying and his wife becoming pregnant with a son, he is ready to reconcile, which is where “Stranger” begins.

Stranger, I'm feeling stranger than I've ever felt before. And so much more... different Like something old has joined with something new But still feels true

I'm passing through a right that every parent does I'm walking on some shared familiar ground. Yet every step I take, is not a step at loss. And I've found, I like the sound of stranger.

A child I've yet to meet becomes my everything. My song to sing. Father, and suddenly the weight of it is real, but do I feel, I feel connected in a way I've never known. A life from dad to me to newborn son. So from today I'll never make a choice alone One for all, All for one

And when he's born I'll teach him how to use his sense He'll listen and he'll learn and he'll excel I'll tell my son that life is lived through clear and present tense Not only in the stories we can tell

My father told me stories I could never comprehend In every tale he claimed to be the hero I’ve tried to understand him, but I wonder if I can Because after almost thirty years I still don’t know the man I wish I knew the man

But he’s a stranger My father is a stranger I know very well. A puzzling shell Hopeful, what’s on its way may helps us both to grow

But I don’t know when I’ll understand what made him wild I don’t know why he has the urge to fly I want to face him like a man, and not a child So I’ll try, I’ll really try And in time my boy is sure to see Brighter days for dad and me We can do things better than before So that strangers we will be… No more! You’ll Be Back Hamilton is an incredibly recent musical composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and has become, without a doubt, the most popular musical on broadway. The musical centers on the founding father, Alexander Hamilton, while infusing more of a rap-style, percussive musical genre instead of a normal melodic contour that most musicals follow. “You’ll Be Back” is sung by the character, King Charles, who comedically sings of deeply loving the people who left England, while also threatening to kill their friends and family.

You say the price of my love's not a price that You’ll be back you're willing to pay Like before You cry in your tea which you hurl in the sea I will fight the fight and win the war When you see me go by For your love Why so sad? For your praise Remember we made an arrangement when you And I’ll love you till my dying days went away Now you're making me mad When you’re gone, I’ll go mad Remember despite our estrangement, I'm your So don’t throw away this thing we had man ‘Cause when push comes to shove I will kill your friends and family You'll be back To remind you of my love Soon you'll see You'll remember you belong to me Da dada da da You'll be back Da dadada dayada Time will tell Dada da da dayada 2X You'll remember that I served you well Everybody! Oceans rise, empires fall We have seen each other through it all Da dada da da And when push comes to shove, Da dadada dayada I will send a fully armed battalion to remind Dada da da dayada you of my love Da dada da da Da dadada dayada Da dada da da Dadada da da dayada Da dadada dayada Dada da da dayada 2X

You say our love is draining and you can't go on You'll be the one complaining when I am gone

And, no, don't change the subject 'Cause you're my favorite subject My sweet, submissive subject My loyal, royal subject Forever and ever and ever and ever and ever

Me “Me” is from the musical, Beauty and the Beast, which premiered on Broadway in 1994. It is one of the highest grossing musicals in broadway history. The story follows a character named Belle, who is quirky, headstrong, and extremely beautiful. Gaston is a tall, handsome, but ultimately self- obsessed man who is set on getting Belle to marry him. In the song “Me,” Gaston assumes Belle wouldn’t dare miss the chance to marry a man as incredible as himself.

You've been dreaming, just one dream I can tell that we will share Nearly all your life All that love implies Hoping, scheming, just one theme: We shall be a perfect pair Will you be a wife? Rather like my thighs Will you be some he-man's property? You are face to face with destiny! Good news! That he-man's me! All roads lead to... The best things in life are... This equation, girl plus man All's well that ends with me! Doesn't help just you Escape me? There's no way On occasion, women can Certain as "Do, Re," Have their uses too Belle, when you marry... Mainly to extend the family tree Pumpkin, extend with me! So Belle, what would it be? Is it "yes", or is it "oh, yes"? We'll be raising sons galore Each built six foot four! ME! Each stuffed with ev'ry Gaston gene! You'll be keeping house with pride! Each day gratified That you’re a part of this idyllic scene.

Picture this: A rustic hunting lodge, my latest kill roasting over the fire, my little wife massaging my feet, while the little ones play on the floor with the dogs. We'll have six or seven! Strapping boys...like me!

Her Voice This piece comes from the ever so popular, The Little Mermaid, which was also composed by Alan Menken. Unlike Beauty and the Beast, the musical version of The Little Mermaid took much longer to release to Broadway. The movie debuted in 1989 while the theatrical version debuted in 2007. The musical follows a mermaid named, Ariel, who is dissatisfied with her life underwater, longing to be with the humans who walk on land. “Her Voice” is sung by the main male character, Eric, who has just been saved by Ariel during a storm on the sea, and is already set on finding her.

Where did she go? I can sense her laughter Where can she be? In the ripple of the waves against the shore When will she come again I can see her smiling Calling to me? In the moonlight as it settles on the sand Calling to me... I can feel her waiting Just beyond the pale horizon Somewhere there's a girl Singing out a melody too lovely to withstand Who's like the shimmer of the wind upon the water And her voice Somewhere there's a girl It’s there as dusk is falling Who's like the glimmer of the sunlight on the And her voice sea It’s there as dawn steals by Somewhere there's a girl Pure and bright, it’s always near Who's like a swell of endless music All day, all night Somewhere she is singing And still I hear it calling… And her song is meant for me Her voice… Come set me free… And her voice It's sweet as angels sighing And her voice It's warm as summer sky And that sound It haunts my dreams And spins me 'round Until it seems I'm flying... Her voice.

Lost in the Woods “Lost in the Woods” is the most recently composed piece in this program, releasing with Frozen 2 in 2019. Frozen 2 follows the story of , , Kristoff, Sven, and , a group of five friends who are out to save their town, Arendelle, which is being attacked by material spirits. Kristoff has been trying to propose to Anna several times, but he fails to get the right words out every time. Anna then leaves with Elsa abruptly, leaving Kristoff behind. Kristoff then sulks with an 80s style ballad, with many reindeer providing back ground vocals.

Again, you're gone, off on a different path than mine I'm left behind, wondering if I should follow

You had to go, and of course it's always fine I probably could catch up with you tomorrow

But is this what it feels like to be growing apart? When did I become the one who's always chasing your heart?

Now I turn around and find I am lost in the woods North is south, right is left, when you're gone I'm the one who sees you home, but now I'm lost in the woods And I don't know what path you are on I'm lost in the woods

Up till now the next step was a question of how I never thought it was a question of whether Who am I, if I’m not your guy? Where am I, if we’re not together forever?

Now I kow you’re my true north, ‘cause I am lost in the woods Up is down, day is night, when you’re not there Oh, you’re my only landmark, so I’m lost in the woods Wondering if you still care

But I’ll wait for a sign that I’m on your path ‘Cause you are mine Until then, I’m lost in the woods I’m lost in the woods I’m lost in the woods

Waving Through a Window A fitting piece to end the recital, “Waving Through a Window” was written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul for the musical Dear Evan Hansen. The story follows a young man, Evan Hansen, who is socially awkward, and injures his arm by attempted suicide. He struggles to think that no one sees him and that he will ever make an impact. This is where “Waving Through a Window” begins.

I've learned to slam on the brake I try to speak, but nobody can hear Before I even turn the key So I wait around for an answer to appear Before I make the mistake While I'm watch, watch, watching people Before I lead with the worst of me pass Waving through a window, oh Give them no reason to stare Can anybody see, is anybody waving? No slipping up if you slip away So I got nothing to share When you're falling in a forest and there's No, I got nothing to say nobody around Do you ever really crash, or even make a Step out, step out of the sun sound? If you keep getting burned When you're falling in a forest and there's Step out, step out of the sun nobody around Because you've learned, because you've Do you ever really crash, or even make a learned sound? When you're falling in a forest and there's On the outside, always looking in nobody around Will I ever be more than I've always been? Do you ever really crash, or even make a 'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass sound? I'm waving through a window When you're falling in a forest and there's I try to speak, but nobody can hear nobody around So I wait around for an answer to appear Do you ever really crash, or even make a While I'm watch, watch, watching people sound? pass Did I even make a sound? I'm waving through a window, oh Did I even make a sound? Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at It's like I never made a sound me? Will I ever make a sound?

We start with stars in our eyes On the outside, always looking in We start believing that we belong Will I ever be more than I've always been? But every sun doesn't rise 'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass And no one tells you where you went wrong Waving through a window I try to speak, but nobody can hear Step out, step out of the sun So I wait around for an answer to appear If you keep getting burned While I'm watch, watch, watching people Step out, step out of the sun pass Because you've learned, because you've Waving through a window, oh learned Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at me? On the outside, always looking in Will I ever be more than I've always been? Is anybody waving? 'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass Waving, waving... Waving through a window
