Magazine October 2017 5 FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK Hi Everyone, The 2017 year has been quite exciting with the quality and number of events conducted by the club so far. Sunday 13th August had to be one of the busiest days this year with 2 great events happening on the same day. Firstly the happy laps and breakfast morning was again a sensational event with a large number of members joining a very memorable and well organized morning and a fantastic opportunity to stretch the legs of those amazing HDT’s and HSV’s at an iconic race track. Then to be given the choice of staying and watching some great classic racing or cruise to the Tekno open day which was a huge event at their magnificent new facility with a huge display of club cars and the Tekno fleet of race and road going monsters. This would have to be the largest crowd support of an event at a race workshop experienced in South East Queensland to date. Congratulations to Tekno on the new facility and the organizing of a magnificent and well received open day. Sunday 20th August Extreme Karting event was organized at Pimpama by Alastair Mitchell with approx. 20 members and friends taking part. This is always a great event where old scores are settled and a number of the front runners are a prime target to get taken out. This was a great day and a whole lot of fun for those that attended and competed. Just a reminder that the Toowoomba All Holden Day is again being held on Sunday 1st October at the Valleys Rugby League Club Toowoomba. We need as many cars as possible to help with a club display to equal all other displays due to the last year of Australian built Holdens and HSV’s. We need your help, the car doesn’t have to be perfect, just needs to be clean and the tyres shining. Let’s do this and support the Toowoomba FX-FJ Club with a huge display. Call Craig Barrass 0411 344 517 and tell him you are joining the display. 6 HSV Owners Club of Qld. Inc. Magazine October 2017 Saturday 14th October the very popular drags at Willowbank Raceway and the last of these events for 2017. Come and join us for a great afternoon. Friday – Sunday 10-12th November Coffs Harbour weekend away with the NSW Club. Phone Opel Cove resort and book and don’t forget to tell them you are with the HSV Owners Club Qld to get the special rate. Saturday 11th November Sprints at Lakeside Raceway, last sprint event for 2017. Do not miss this one. Call Peter Woods to book your spot. Saturday 18th November the HSV Owners Club Queensland 35th Anniversary afternoon and dinner at the Railway Museum and Workshop Ipswich. Book now as there are limited places available as this is booking out fast. You must not miss this huge celebration and very special guests on the night. Motorsport update Does anybody have an active crystal ball that can predict the outcome of this year’s Super Car Championship? This is a crazy year and super hard to pick from a number of contenders and the results so far are too close to call. Now we enter the Enduro part of the season where an absolute outsider can get in the mix. Points so far in the Championship for the Top 10 1. Scott McLaughlan 2058 2. Jamie Whincup 2046 3. Fabian Coulthard 1951 4. Shane VanGisbergen 1800 5. Chaz Mostert 1794 6. Mark Winterbottom 1503 7. Craig Lowndes 1446 8. David Reynolds 1395 9. Garth Tander 1368 10 . Cam Waters 1264 There are only 794 points separating 1-10 in the championship and now the Enduro’s begin. The game can change very quickly from here. GOOD LUCK with your prediction on who is going to win 2017 championship!!!!! We need your support for these great events that are coming our way. Look forward to seeing you all real soon. Les Gray - President HSV Owners Club of Qld. Inc. Magazine October 2017 7 Sunday 10th September 2017 Cruise to Flaxton Gardens 8 HSV Owners Club of Qld. Inc. Magazine October 2017 HSV Owners Club of Qld. Inc. Magazine October 2017 9 Happy Laps at Lakeside Sunday 13th August 2017 We had 49 people attend the Happy laps and Breakfast at Lakeside Raceway as part of the Lakeside Classic. Everyone was well behaved as per normal and the group enjoyed the full 30 minutes track time following our normal bacon and eggs breakfast. We had an earlier start than normal and approximately half those attending stayed on to soak up the atmosphere of the Lakeside classic with historic race cars on track and in the pits. The other half convoyed to Techno for the Tekno open day. As the organiser, I thank all those that supported our 3 events this year and we will be attempting to get 4 events next year with two at Lakeside and two at QR. 10 HSV Owners Club of Qld. Inc. Magazine October 2017 Sunday the 20th of August HSV Xtreme Karting Challenge Sunday the 20th of August saw 11 karters taking to the track for the annual HSV karting chal- lenge. We were all pumped up to hit the track to see who was going to set the fastest time for qualifying and with a fairly trouble-free run for most saw Chris Sharples set the pace early and put his kart on pole and Adrian Knight 2nd Followed by Alastair Mitchell 3rd.

  • MAGAZINE September 2019
B Manawatu Car Club Inc MAGAZINE September 2019 Something for Everyone Page 1 of 47 EDITORSPEAK … I sometimes wonder if I write for my own benefit, being isolated up here in “almost Jaffaland”, so it’s nice to get occasional feedback from other members, be it positive or negative. A positive email this month with long time enthusiast BJ sharing his submission to the “Road to Zero” proposal and endorsing the viewpoint that both theoretical, and more importantly, “hands on” driver training is the primary key to a lower road toll. I admit to not putting together a submission of my own, I am afraid I’m far too cynical of my favourite Government department and consider the present Minister of Transport, and more especially his Associate Minister, to have an agenda designed to push the current barrow of increased use of public transport, walking, biking and increasing uptake of EV’s. How this works when there is no infrastructure outside of the main cities in this country I am at a loss to explain – and so are they, but hey, why ruin a perfect plan.... I’ve also had some to and fro correspondence with Auckland Transport over their Vision Zero scheme, and the responses show me that 1. Public opinion doesn’t matter one jot; 2. Ideology rules despite clear evidence that it is often not practical; and 3. Application of emotive rhetoric, selective figures and spin is considered better than transparency and rigorous and robust discussion. So forgive me if I appear a bit jaded and non-committed by NOT completing a submission similar to BJ’s.
