HSV Owners Club of Qld. Inc. Magazine September 2017 5 FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

Hi Everybody,

The 2017 year is marching on with great events being completed, we hope you are all enjoying the many different events as well as the favourites included in each years calendar.

Sunday 16th July the cruise to Mavis’s Kitchen for lunch was a cracker of an event. Leaving from the Logan Hyperdome and cruising down the M1 to Nerang then to the Hinze Dam for morning tea gives a combination of highway cruising and winding mountain roads, certainly ideal for the HSV’s. After the pit stop at the Hinze Dam cruising through to Mudgeeraba back onto the M1, through to Murwillumbah then heading towards Mt Warning to Mavis’s Kitchen for a great lunch.

This lunch venue was an absolutely stunning setting with fantastic food. A huge thank you to Ian Huddleston for organizing this cruise run with a second to none attention to detail and a pleasure to be part of this cruise. For the members that missed out on this cruise, don’t make the same mistake when Ian organizes the next one. Get in early and put your name down, you won’t regret it.

Friday 28th Sat 29th and Sunday 30th July Supercars Ipswich Super Sprints. Again the club was on the back straight with the marquee set up on the 200 meter braking line with cars displayed from there towards the northern corner. I have to say that supercars got the traffic management plan for the exit each day especially for the club cars correct. This year I was home up to an hour quicker than last year. The only complaint was the lack of toilets and food vendors on the back straight of which I have sent an email to Kris Johnson from supercars regarding this problem, having received a very prompt reply stating he will seriously look into this problem for next year and hopefully have it addressed in a manner satisfactory to us. He also stated that they took such feedback seriously and would do everything he could to rectify for next year. The weekend overall was very good with a pit walk through at Mobil1 HSV Racing each day and an opportunity to purchase Mobil1 HSV Racing apparel from their very own merchandise marquee in side show alley.

We must thank Motorama and HSV for their support of the club again for the weekend. The marquee looked sensational with its signage and a beautiful 30th Anniversary GTS parked in front for all to see. Certainly each race team identified exactly where the club set up was and made very positive comments about it .Thank you to the members that joined us trackside for the weekend and for the members that missed out on park and view tickets due to them being sold out early. Make sure next year you get in very early and secure your position in the display on the back straight.

Also the announcement by the Ipswich City Council to spend 52 Million dollars on the upgrade of Queensland Raceway and the signing by supercars for a further 10 years provided the upgrades are done is a very positive step forward towards creating a world class motorsport facility here in the South East. I would suggest it is badly needed and way overdue. Can’t wait to see how this announcement plays out over the next 12 months.

Once again thank you to all for the support of the club events and encourage you to keep coming along and enjoy what this club has to offer as often as you can.

TREASURERS REPORT We have cash at bank of $1467.44 in chq account and $13013.90 in higher interest deposit for a total of $14481.34. We have increased stock of new apparel in last two months by approx. $2200 which should be converted to cash in coming months. We also made the donation to the Children’s Hospital Foundation for $1000 from the car show profit of same amount. I move that treasurers report be accepted.

Sprints We received great support from participants and spectators for the Two Days of Thunder in June. I have three trophies to present tonight for the joint winners and third. Congratulations go to Rob Droder and Alastair Mitchell for joint first with zero points and 5 laps each of zero. I came third with zero points and 3 laps on zero. The full write up is in the magazine but we have first to third for year to date on zero points with Alastair leading with 11laps on zero, Rob Droder 7 laps and Peter Woods 5 laps. The next outing via entries with normal sprint group is at QR on Saturday 02/09/17 at usual time. Please note entry will have to be made via QR website into their normal sprint group and you should get in early.

Drags Full write up in latest magazine but great to see Toni Kennedy leading the way regardless of gender. Next outing is Saturday 14th October. Please note we will change the pricing from $80 which included two entry tickets to $60 with one entry ticket as Willowbank now only issue 1 ticket with entry and charge $20 per person for any others in car. This also cuts down markedly on my ability to use spare tickets from single entry drivers for others that want to just watch. Please keep this in mind if you come out to spectate. A money grab in my opinion but nothing I can do about it.

8 HSV Owners Club of Qld. Inc. Magazine September 2017 Happy Laps The last happy laps and breakfast event is Sunday 13th August at Lakeside with a full write up in the magazine. Please note the 15 minute earlier starting time due to the fact we are part of a full program race weekend. Be there for 7.00am at gate for a 7.15am breakfast and 7.45-8.15 am happy laps. You are welcome to stay on afterwards to watch days events and there will be 19 genuine group A and group C cars competing as well as other categories As this is part of a major race meet you will need to tell them you are there for HSV happy laps and Breakfast. Their preference was to have everybody named but hopefully I have avoided this. I will be taking names and numbers here tonight as we have to prepay and we hope to see you on Sunday 13th. Accepted Nev Weathered 2nd Barry Dunley.

GENERAL BUSINESS Racing trophies. Rob & Alastair shared 1st place. Rob won a trophy from QR & Andrew won a show & shine trophy. Next outing via normal sprint group via QR. Drags – write up in magazine. Toni Kennedy winning. Next event 14/10/2017. $60 only has 1 entry. $20 spectator.

There will be at least 3*4 lap sessions plus passenger ride session at discretion of track management - time permitting.

All entries will need to be made on line with payment to QR direct at current cost of $175 and you should enter early as the events fill up quickly. Other costs apart from running costs are QR AASA track licence of $65 per year or $30 per day. A timing device can be bought for $120.00 which will last for approx. 7 years or can be hired for $30 a day with an $80 deposit required with $50 refund upon return. Helmet hire is available for $5.00 a day. QR operates EFTPOS facilities at both tracks for licence, transmitter, and helmet hire.

18 HSV Owners Club of Qld. Inc. Magazine September 2017 Entries will need to be done via QR website and you need to first register as a user then go to event date and QR will allocate you in a group on the day based on your time. Please email me when you have done this so I know who is coming. Entries will be on a first in first served basis and you should enter ASAP as events tend to be booked out and late entry may not see you make the cut. After June 2017 you will have to pay QR direct on line.

Entrants should arrive at track at approx 11.45 for sign in with the drivers briefing normally taking place approximately 12.15pm with first groups on track around 1.00pm.

Expected finish time is 4.00pm. Prospective entrants should check the motorsport tab on our website to view handy tips for vehicle preparation for the sprints.

If you want to race this is not the event for you. If you want to stretch your cars legs and improve your driving skills we would love to have you along. You should also be aware that your car is unlikely to be covered by comprehensive insurance for any damage whilst on track.

The cruise will begin at the Shell Nudgee truck stop. Meeting time will be 8am departing at 8:30am sharp. Arrive early and grab some brekky and a coffee and have a chat with your fellow club members.

It is here that we will stop for about one hour to stretch the legs. From here we will head up to Peachester turning left on to Bald Knob Road, then through Maleny and Montville before arriving at Flaxton for lunch at about 11:45.

20 HSV Owners Club of Qld. Inc. Magazine September 2017 The cruise route is fantastic with a mixture of long open roads to twisty curves up the mountains, and the views over the Coast and the Glass House Mountains are to die for, just what you need for a Sunday cruise in your mean machine.

Lunch will be off the menu (Menu on the club web site) on pre-order only. Names and meal selection must be in by the 2nd September one week prior to the cruise. Meals payable for on arrival direct to the Flaxton Gardens.

Don’t miss this one members, the cruise route is exceptional and the restaurant superb at reasonable prices.

HDT VL GROUP A

The VL SS Group A was the second car built for Group A racing purposes and also numbered 500 in total. Released in 1986 it was hot on top of Grice’s Bathurst win and the launch of the Unleaded V8. Due to the controversial Energy Polariser there was actually two versions of the Group A. Holden could see no technical merit in the Polariser and thus refused to fit it to the cars, so Brock refused to put decals with his signature on cars without it. As a result, Brock’s signature only appears on the higher spec Plus Pack variant.

The Plus Pack also included revised springs and anti-roll bars as well as revised front suspension geometry and changed spring mounting pads. It also has improved cylinder head cooling with the introduction of an extra water passage to the head and a higher-pressure fuel pump.

On the inside was a plaque on the glovebox indicating the vehicles build number. Seats were the familiar Scheel items and naturally the steering wheel was supplied by Momo, as was the leather gear knob.

The Exhaust was of the low restriction big bore variety and had headers designed with Group A racing in mind and as such featured a flange only inches from the cylinder heads. This was done as Group A regulations allowed a free exhaust from the first flange, so they put the first flange as close as possible to the engine to capitalise on the rules. The engine also featured heavy duty con rods and crankshaft as well as Crane (gold coloured) roller rockers and a lightened flywheel.

For the first time the Borg Warner T5G 5 speed transmission was standard fitment and diff was the 4 pinion Borg Warner item with 3.08 ratio The new body kit comprised a new radiator grille, colour keyed bumpers, Racing specification spoilers on the front and on the boot lid and a small grooved Induction scoop attached to the bonnet with a new cold air induction set up. All cars were painted in the Permanent Red colour, but of note is that the two prototypes were white.

Your car does not need to be registered nor does it need to be a HSV or HDT. We have no maximum competitor numbers and we have had up to 35 in the past with everyone getting more than enough track time. We could easily cater for up to 50 so invite your friends along to compete and settle those long-standing arguments once and for all. We don’t mind a bit of any brand verse HSV/HDT action. If your car runs faster than 10.99 seconds please see Willowbank raceway website for special additional requirements.

Clothing requirements Minimum Long sleeve shirt, full length pants and closed footwear. Australian Standard Helmet required

28 HSV Owners Club of Qld. Inc. Magazine September 2017 If you are competing you will be issued with 2 entry forms at the gate. You will then make your way to the staging lanes where you will complete the Willowbank Raceway form and hand to scrutineer. The second club form will be handed in when you are ready to nominate your target time up to a maximum of 3 test passes. They will check your helmet and issue you with a number and the number will be written on your windows with white boot polish. This washes off afterwards with no damage. At nominated times above the lanes will be open and you will be free to run for 1.5 hours. Time slips are printed for each run and are available at the base of the tower for pick up. The club is supplied all timing information the following week to allow calculation of fastest time. Your entry covers you to stay on and run after 4.00pm in the main test and tune event.

For 2017 we are going to run the dial your own time format for scoring. After a maximum of 3 test passes you will hand in your information sheet which will identify you and your race number and you will nominate your time. Points will be allocated for the closest 2 passes for the remainder of the meet to the nominated time and you will need to compete in both events to qualify for the end of year trophy. The trophies on offer will be first to third male and first to third female.

If you want to be in the point score you will need to make sure you hand a nominated time form in on the day.

For 2017 I intend to post scores up after each event so everyone knows how they are going and to attract a little more interest.

It is always a low stress great fun event. So please come out and have some fun and bring your mates with you. No need to advise your attendance in advance. Just make sure you are at the main gate by the nominated time on the day.

HSV Owners Club of Qld. Inc. Magazine September 2017 29 "WINGS AND WHEELS DAY" CABOOLTURE AERODROME SUNDAY 29th. OCTOBER

Caboolture Warplane and Flight Heritage Museum Inc. is holding its annual open day on Sunday 29th October. Club life member, Rod Thiesfield, who is involved with the restoration of aircraft at Caboolture, has obtained an invitation from the Warplane Museum for our club to attend the day again this year. They were so impressed with our display last year they would like us back again this year, so let’s see if we can better last year’s numbers and impress them even more.

This was a fantastic event last year, with both static and live displays from the vintage planes along with military vehicles, and other displays. There was so much to see the time went way to fast.

The hours of attendance are 8-00am to 3-00pm with the public admitted from 9-00am. Catering will be available on site. Entry for the car and driver will be $10.00 and $5.00 for each additional passenger.

We plan to meet at Shell Nudgee Rd at 6:45for a 7:15 departure to arrive at Caboolture Airfield for 8:00am. A second meeting point will be at BP Burpengary (Northbound) people from this meeting point will be able join the convoy as we pass.

As we well and truly enter the second half of the year, the fat man in his red suit is starting to service his sleigh. I hope everyone who attended Ian's cruise enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Les for once again organising a great weekend at the V8 Supercars.
