RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE LONG BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT IN SUPPORT OF 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE MORATORIUM MARCH

WHEREAS, on August 29, 1970, more than 20,000 demonstrators marched through East Los Angeles for the National Chicano Moratorium Against the , which was the biggest gathering of Mexican American demonstrators in U.S. history to that point and a significant moment in the Chicano civil rights movement; and

WHEREAS, the peaceful demonstration in 1970 to highlight the disproportionately high and death rate of devolved into a conflict with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, resulting in the arrest of hundreds of demonstrators and the death of esteemed Latino journalist and two others; and

WHEREAS, the Chicano Moratorium was coordinated by the National Chicano Moratorium Committee (NCMC) and led largely by activists from the Chicano student movement United Mexican American Students (UMAS) and the organization; and

WHEREAS, on August 29, 2020, several hundred demonstrators once again assembled in East Los Angeles to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Chicano Moratorium in an event that was led by the Brown Berets and called for the end of police brutality and unity among the Latino and Black communities; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the LONG BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT prioritizes equitable student learning and delivering high-quality educational programs and support services to our diverse communities; and

WHEREAS, the LONG BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT is designated as a Hispanic- serving institution, and 54% of the current student body identifies as Hispanic/Latino; and

WHEREAS, the Latinx Faculty & Staff Association of Long Beach City College as well as the student clubs LAC Men of Aztlan and Puente Club LBCC are an active and vital part of the LONG BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT; and

WHEREAS, the LONG BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT provides opportunities for students and the community at large to learn about Chicano art, culture, and history; and

WHEREAS, the LONG BEACH COMMUNTIY COLLEGE DISTRICT is embarking on a Framework for Reconciliation, which begins with acknowledging the existence and long-standing impacts of systemic racism in Long Beach and the country and includes listening to accounts and experiences of racial injustice and inequity;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Trustees of LONG BEACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT hereby joins the Chicano community in remembering this impactful historical event and supports the ongoing effort to fight racial injustice.
