Cobb and the Law of Negro Slavery Paul Finkelman* From the Revolution until the Civil War Southern intellectu- als, professionals, and politicians developed and articulated elabo- rate defenses of slavery. The most significant proslavery legal scholar was Thomas R.R. Cobb, a Georgia attorney, law professor and one-time reporter for the Georgia Supreme Court. His trea- tise, An Inquiry into the Law of Negro Slavery in the United States of America,' profoundly illustrates the way antebellum Southern lawyers and judges used their learning and talents to support slavery. Proslavery advocates, such as Cobb, emphatically insisted on the justice and morality-the essential rightness-of slavery. Cobb believed that racially based slavery was a prerequisite for a truly "republican equality"2 because only in such a system were all whites equal in status, regardless of their wealth, property, or sta- tion in life. -

Si svolse, per l'ultima volta, al Palazzo del Quirinale dal 14 al 16 giugno, e, dopo quattro scrutini, venne eletto papa il cardinale Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti, vescovo di Imola, che assunse il nome di Pio IX. L'elezione venne annunciata dal cardinale protodiacono Tommaso Riario Sforza. I cardinali elettori Il collegio cardinalizio[1], alla morte di Gregorio XVI, era composto da 62 cardinali, più 6 in pectore che non furono però mai proclamati. Di questi 62, 2 cardinali erano stati nominati da Pio VII, 7 da Leone XII, e gli altri 53 da Gregorio XVI. Dei 62 cardinali solo 8 erano stranieri, e precisamente: Schwarzenberg, arcivescovo di Salisburgo, Gaisruck di Milano (a quei tempi città imperiale), De Bonald di Lione, Bernet di Aix, Cienfuegos di Siviglia, Carvalho di Lisbona, Sterckx di Malines, De La Tour d'Auvergne, vescovo di Arras. Nessuno di questi partecipò al conclave. Gli altri 54 cardinali erano tutti italiani, e di questi 50 presero parte all'elezione: mancavano i cardinali Villadicani Arcivescovo di Messina, Giacomo Monico Patriarca di Venezia, Ignazio Cadolino, Arcivescovo di Ferrara e Placido Maria Tadini Arcivescovo di Genova. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. “Servants, Obey Your Masters”: Southern Representations of the Religious Lives of Slaves Abstract This paper focuses on how representations of the religious lives of slaves, specifically their abilities to comprehend the Bible and flourish spiritually, became an issue that not only propelled the North and South toward the Civil War, but also perpetuated the conflict. Using original documents from the collections housed at Chicago’s Newberry Library, predominantly sermons written by proslavery ministers as well as documents published by missionary organizations, this paper explores the fierce defense of the institution of slavery mounted by proslavery Christians. Specifically, this paper’s interest is in how the representation of slaves by proslavery evangelical Christians as incapable of achieving spiritual flourishing without the aid of white Christians was the lynch pin that held their defense of slavery together. -

Marquette University, 2019 Is there life beyond slavery? In the past 20 years, there has been a significant increase in research related to human trafficking. However, very little of it has examined the ethical issues that survivors face as they attempt to reintegrate back into society, or that aftercare workers face as they attempt to assist survivors in the reintegration process. And there has been almost nothing written on how the tools of moral and political theology might offer insight into these issues. This dissertation attempts to begin to address this gap in the literature. In order to assess what the nature of these ethical issues are, a series of interviews were conducted with survivors of human trafficking (both bonded labor and sex trafficking) and professionals providing assistance to survivors in Chennai and Mumbai. -

The Catholic Association campaigned for Catholic Emancipation, a successful movement that promoted the participation of Catholic elites in the United Kingdom Parliament. In the 1840s the Friends of Repeal formed in the United States in order to support Daniel O’Connell’s Repeal Association in Ireland. This organization sought the repeal of the Act of Union of 1800, which had created the United Kingdom and dismantled the Irish Parliament. -

(Pope Pius IX and Pope Leo XIII) András Jancsó Danube Institute – March 2021 Introduction On January 16, 2021, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), held its leadership election which was won by Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet. Prior to the election, the website of the German Catholic Church showcased its CDU leadership candidates with the title “Three Catholic Races”, but highlighting at the same time that Laschet was probably the “most Catholic” out of all the candidates. According to the article, Laschet is connected to the Catholic Church in all areas of life, be it education, student union, editing an diocesan newspaper, or administering a Catholic publishing house. It is noted that, as Minister- President, he refrained from direct state interference as regards religious freedom during the pandemic, and was even received by Pope Francis during a private audience (Scholz, 2021). Nonetheless, following the election, the Catholic daily newspaper Die Tagespost reported that there was some disappointment in the CDU’s Saxon and Thuringian Catholic working groups noting that Friedrich Mertz was not the one to be elected as leader of the CDU. Dissatisfaction is clearly due to political and non-religious differences. Both Mathias Kretschmer, a Saxon, and Claudia Heber, chairperson of the Thuringian Catholic working group, highlighted Mertz’s economic competence. However, after the election, Kretschmer expressed concern about whether Catholics are still supporters of CDU at all. He once again stressed the need to clarify the meaning of the letter “C” in CDU when addressing issues like family policy, protection of life, and creation protection (Die Tagespost, 2021). -

TELLING THE TRUTH White Presbyterians and Race in the 19th Century A PRESBYTERIAN TRAGEDY Presbyterian attitudes about race and slavery developed and transmuted from the colonial period to Reconstruction: Regional difference to a degree: Southerners tended to be more pro-slavery throughout Theological shifts: the growing Old School commitment to the “spiritual mission of the church” General inconsistency, especially on the part of the New School EARLY PRESBYTERIAN STATEMENTS ON SLAVERY Following in line with the early revolutionary rhetoric in the 1780s and 1790s, Presbyterians consistently supported the general abolition of slavery (Thompson, 1:324ff): 1787: Synod of New York and Philadelphia approved “the general principles in favor of universal liberty, that prevail in America, and the interest in which man of the states have taken in promoting the abolition of slavery”; urged members to seek the same in their states. 1792: David Rice, a Kentucky Presbyterian minister, published a pamphlet, “Slavery Inconsistent with Justice and Good Policy.” Rice: “The slavery of Negroes began in iniquity: a curse has attended it, and a curse will follow it. National vices will be punished with national calamities. Let us avoid these vices that we may avoid the punishment they deserve.” EARLY PRESBYTERIAN STATEMENTS ON SLAVERY Following in line with the early revolutionary rhetoric in the 1780s and 1790s, Presbyterians consistently supported the general abolition of slavery (Thompson, 1:324ff): 1794: Transylvania Presbytery (KY) overtured the General Assembly regarding holding fellowship with slaveholders 1795: General Assembly replied by urging forbearance, but also noting the 1787 action of the Synod of New York and Philadelphia. -

The View From The Bluff will include historical snapshots much like the Moments in Ministry from previous issues. 1929 at 100 years of founding Bishop Emmett M. Walsh said, “The story of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy is a simple narrative of heroism in danger, patient endurance in hardship, perseverance in the face of discouragement, fidelity in small things, and all the while poverty was a daily companion. It is a story of generous Christ-like service to the sick and wounded, to the orphan and prisoner, to the poor and distressed, in peace and war, in calamity and pestilence. It tells of Missionaries….Under their Bishop they taught the negro and white….in grammar schools and high schools, free schools and academies, in city and country, in parish and mission. Peter Sullivan Twenty-one year old Jane Frances Sullivan of Cork, Ireland, was one of four young women selected by Bishop John England as candidates for the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy during his visit to Ireland in the summer of 1841. She Sr. Anne Francis Campbell entered the Community in November 1841, five months before the death of Bishop England on April 11, 1842.
