We pride ourselves with the likes of Archbishop Tutu, Archbishop Ndungane and Fr Michael Lapsley who have spoken, acted and suffered for being the voice for the voiceless. These men of God were once dubbed INSIDE T enemies of the state because of their just actions on behalf of the poor and the marginalised. Our theme for this edition of Sego sa Meetse is Peace, Justice and Reconciliation which were also key components of Jesus’ ministry. As HOPE Africa, we believe that the three complement each other, and one cannot exist without the other. I can not help but associate Tutu, Ndungane and Lapsley with these values. In his Charge to the Anglican Community, the Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba, said “I believe myself to be called to be Sego Sa Meetse: a vessel for peace with justice and reconciliation, and for cultivating a ‘yeast’ for healing the bruised, crushed and broken in God’s world”. He further invited God’s Church regardless of denominational borders, those of other faiths and none to journey with him in his calling. It goes without saying that the Anglican Church has played a pivotal role in striving for peace, justice and reconciliation in our region and beyond. It was the Church that provided a safe space for the vulnerable and acted as centres of peace and justice ARCHBISHOPs’ MESSAGE 2 during difficult times. Who can forget the 1989 Peace March in Cape Town? An article about the 20th celebration of the Peace March has been included in this edition. As some of you may remember, during the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) proceedings in South Africa, Archbishop Tutu was a figure of peace and even humor in that difficult time. The TRC would not have yielded the same results if it was not led by a leader rooted in faith. In his book “God has a dream”, Archbishop Tutu explains that “God’s dream is a place where laughter, love and peace reign and where we realise that we are all members of one family – God’s family.” The Church is called to respond to unjust situations which we witness in our communities, and to promote peace and reconciliation where conflict seems to be the order of the day. We are reminded by a well-known international author and an GRADUATE ALIVE Anglican priest, Stephen Sizer, that justice in the eyes of Jesus is relational, creative, liberating, vindicating and restorative 5 (Luke 4: 17 – 21). Jesus does not want us to live in fear, bewilderment, destruction, frustration, and worry; thus he leaves us with his peace in John 14: 27. All we are called to do is to share his peace with all God’s creation. On the 25th of November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) through to International Human Rights Day on December 10, South Africa marks the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign. We invite you to join HOPE Africa in prayer for peace, justice and reconciliation at our homes, schools and communities during the 16 Days. Our candles will be lit throughout and we will be part of a Red Light Campaign road show on human trafficking in the rural towns of the Western Cape in our quest to raise awareness on Modern Day Slavery. What will you be doing? In our AGM in June, we bid farewell to Rev. M. Fourie, Rev. Dr. T. Guma, Mrs H. Vember and Mrs N. Biko from HOPE Africa’s board of directors and we salute them for the invaluable contributions throughout the development of the organisation. In the GIVING HOPE same spirit, we welcome Mrs J. Fortuin, Mr. C. Sampson, Dr. S. Magona and Ms. P. Vilakazi on the board of directors. We are 8 looking forward to working with them and being guided by them. They bring with them extensive experience and expertise that will contribute to the growth and development of HOPE Africa. In his Charge to the Anglican Community gathered for his installation the Archbishop of Cape Town used Sego sa INSIDE Meetse as a theme to send the message of service to the community. He said “I chose the Sepedi phrase “sego sa meetse” as my theme. Simply put, sego is a vessel and meetse is water. Yet the two also have deeper meaning, just as living water, the Holy Spirit, does in John’s gospel. Sego sa Meetse not only provides drink for the thirsty; it also transforms various ingredients into sustaining nourishment; and H.O.P.E having done so, it provides thlabego, the yeast, which catalyses the next meal to come.” The Archbishop continued: “In today’s gospel passage, dramatised so powerfully, we heard how the disciples were sent to be channels of peace, channels of the breath – the Spirit – of God and of his forgiveness. Christ said to them “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” In the same way, we, the baptized, the new body of Christ, are called through the Spirit of God to be 2 channels or vessels, sego, of that same peace and forgiveness which we have received.” This newsletter intends to live up to the Archbishop’s Charge and be the channel of Hope Africa’s work to the community.

    Anglican Communion Environmental Network Environmental Racism – When #BlackLives Don’t Matter Juneteenth Statement – 19 June 2020 Black lives are disproportionately affected by police brutality; COVID-19 sweeps through crowded vulnerable communities unable to socially distance; toxic dump sites are placed next to poor communities of Black people; indigenous people are forced off their land. The world is slow to respond to climate change, hanging on to an increasingly precarious and unjust economic system. It is predominantly Black lives that are being impacted by drought, flooding, storms and sea level rise. The delayed global response to climate injustice gives the impression that #blacklivesdontmatter. Without urgent action Black lives will continue to be the most impacted, being dispossessed from their lands and becoming climate refugees. We stand at a Kairos moment - in order to fight environmental injustice , we must also fight racial injustice. In the words of Archbishop Tutu “If you are neutral in times of injustice you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” The Anglican Communion Environmental Network (ACEN) calls attention to environmental racism. We issue this urgent statement today, June 19 2020, a day known as Juneteenth in the United States, marking and remembering the official end of slavery in that country in 1865. We call attention in particular to the impact of environmental racism on indigenous peoples decimated by the effects of colonization. Tribes of people were enslaved, and annihilated by harsh conditions and by diseases for which they had no immunity in the first decades of colonization. Later indigenous groups such as the Taíno in what is now Haiti and the Dominican Republic were replaced by enslaved peoples from Africa.

    Ungusobaba1 [you are our father]: the life of an Anglican bishop, Lawrence Bekisisa Zulu (1937-2013+) Henry Mbaya Department of Missiology, University of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch, South Africa Abstract This study seeks to document the role that Lawrence Bekisisa Zulu played in the Anglican Church in South Africa (ACSA), particularly in the dioceses of Zululand and Swaziland, as a bishop. It records the life story of Zulu as a leader whose gifts as a pastor, teacher and priest enriched the lives of many clergy and lay people. That Zulu was entrusted with leadership positions in three dioceses, also suggests the strength of his moral authority and spirituality. The study demonstrates how the context of colonialism and apartheid shaped Zulu’s approach to the issues of poverty and human dignity. Zulu’s contribution is evident especially in the manner in which he as a community leader tried to enhance social development by fostering the spirit of self-reliance through his pastoral ministry, consequently striving to assert the dignity of humanity. Introduction In this article, I will highlight the contribution of Lawrence Bekisisa Zulu, who in 1975 followed Alpheus Zulu to become the second black bishop in the Anglican Diocese of Zululand, and later Bishop of Swaziland in 1993 and then from 2001 to 2005 a caretaker bishop (Vicar General) of Mpumalanga diocese. To do this, I will address the question: What special contribution did Zulu make to the life of the Anglican Church in Southern Africa (ACSA), particularly in Zululand and Swaziland? In response to this question, I will illustrate how his personal life and ministry of 45 years tried to transform the religious and social aspects of the lives of the people in the rural communities of KwaZulu-Natal and Swaziland.
