  • One Baptism, One Hope in God's Call
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDING OFFICERS OF THE GENERAL CONVENTION Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: As your Presiding Officers we appointed the Special Commission on the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion late in 2005. The Special Commission was asked to prepare the way for a consideration by the 75th General Convention of recent developments in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion with a view to maintaining the highest degree of communion possible. They have admirably discharged this very weighty task. With our deep thanks to them we commend their report to you. Here we would like to make three observations. First, though this document is a beginning point for legislative decisions—and indeed includes eleven resolutions—it is first and foremost a theological document. Its primary focus is on our understanding of our participation as members of the Anglican Communion in God’s Trinitarian life and God’s mission to which we are called. Second, the report is intended as the beginning point for a conversation that will take place in Columbus under the aegis of the Holy Spirit. That is, it is intended to start the conversation and not conclude it: the Commission has seen itself as preparing the General Convention to respond in the wisest possible ways. Again, we thank the members of the Special Commission who have been servants of this process of discernment. Third, following up on the careful work done by the Commission, the General Convention is now invited into the Windsor Process and the further unfolding of our common life together in the Anglican Communion.

  • Faith in the Real World Pastoral Letter from the Synod of Bishops 25Th February 2017 Dear People of God, We Greet You in the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ
1 Pastoral Letter from Synod of Bishops – February 2017 Faith in the Real World Pastoral Letter from the Synod of Bishops 25th February 2017 Dear People of God, We greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. As Bishops of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (ACSA), we met in Synod in Benoni from Monday 20th until Saturday 25th February 2017. The full bench of Bishops was present, including: Those from all the countries that make up our Province of the Anglican Communion – St Helena, Angola, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique and South Africa; Those who were Consecrated Bishop on Saturday 25th February – Rt Revd William Mostert, Bishop of Christ the King (southern Gauteng) and Rt Revd Vicente Msosa, Bishop of Niassa (northern Mozambique). As always our meeting took place in a framework of worship and warm fellowship as we shared our lives and worked on issues facing the church and our communities. At our opening Eucharist we heard the words of Jesus, “All things can be done for the one who believes!” (Mark 9:23) and the response, “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24). We met as church leaders and people of faith who are deeply aware of the challenges facing our churches and communities and the desperate need for leadership of the highest quality. Most of our time this week was devoted to receiving training in the basics of Economics and Management, and reflecting on how God is calling us to exercise leadership in today’s economic climate. We were ably led by Prof Martin Büscher (Institute for Diaconic Science and Diaconic Management (IDM), Protestant University of Wuppertal/Bethel, Germany) and Dr Bright Mawudor (Deputy General Secretary of the All Africa Conference of Churches).

  • Chapter 4: BISHOP ROBERT GRAY – an ASSESSMENT
A clash of churchmanship? Robert Gray and the Evangelical Anglicans 1847 – 1872 Alan Peter Beckman Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts (Church and Dogma History) at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University. Supervisor: Dr J Newby Co-supervisor: Dr P H Fick May 2011. 2 ABSTRACT This study investigates the initial causes of Anglican division in South Africa in order to assess whether the three Evangelical parishes in the Cape Peninsula were justified in declining to join the Church of the Province of South Africa when it was formally constituted as a voluntary association in January 1870. The research covered the following: Background to the period in England and at the Cape, based on the histories pertinent to the period; An assessment of the differences in churchmanship between the Evangelicals and the Anglo-Catholics, through study of the applicable literature; A critical assessment of the character, churchmanship, aims, and actions of the first bishop of Cape Town, Robert Gray, drawn from the two-volume biography of his life, his journals and documents obtained in the archives; An analysis of the disputes between Bishop Gray and two Evangelical clergymen, analyzed from the published correspondence and archive material. The conclusion of the study is that the differences in churchmanship between the Evangelicals and the Anglo Catholics were very substantial and when coupled with the character, aims and actions of Bishop Gray, left the Evangelicals with little option but to decline the invitation to join his voluntary association. KEY WORDS Anglican Evangelical Anglo-Catholic Tractarian Churchmanship 3 UITREKSEL In hierdie studie word die aanvanklike oorsake van Anglikaanse verdeeldheid in Suid-Afrika ondersoek ten einde te bepaal of die drie Evangeliese gemeentes in die Kaapse Skiereiland geregverdig was om nie aan te sluit by die Church of the Province of South Africa nie toe dit formeel gekonstitueer was as 'n vrywillige vereniging in Januarie 1870.

  • An Eirenicon
THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND A PORTION OF CHRIST’S ONE HOLY CATHOLIC CHURCH, AND A MEANS OF RESTORING VISIBLE UNITY. AN EIRENICON, In a Letter TO THE AUTHOR OF “THE CHRISTIAN YEAR.” BY E. B. PUSEY, D.D., REGIUS PROFESSOR OF HEBREW, AND CANON OF CHRIST CHURCH, OXFORD. NEW YORK: D. APPLETON AND COMPANY, 1866 Project Canterbury AD 2003 An Eirenicon, by Edward Bouverie Pusey (1866) MY DEAREST FRIEND, You think that, Dr. Manning’s last letter having been addressed to myself, it is desirable that I should in some way reply to it. It would cost me much, not to undertake any task which you might wish me to essay. You know how long it has been my wish to part with all controversy, and to consecrate the evening of my life to the unfolding of some of the deep truths of God’s Holy Word, as God might enable me, by aid of those whom He has taught in times past. This employment, and practical duties which God has brought to me, were my ideal of the employments of the closing years of a laborious life. The inroad made upon the Gospel by unbelievers, or half-believers, compelled me in part to modify this my hope. Still, since there is a common foe, pressing alike upon all who believe in Jesus, I the more hoped, at least, to be freed from any necessity of controversy with any who hold the Catholic faith. The recent personal appeal of Dr. Manning to myself seems, as you and other friends think, to call for an exception to this too; yet, since “the night cometh when no man can work,” I trust that I shall not be thought to shrink from duty, if, hereafter, I should maintain a silence, in order to give myself to that which seems to me more especially my calling.

WELCOME MESSAGE Your Grace Thabo Makgoba, Archbishop of Cape Town and Metropolitan of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa. Dear Reverend Christopher, Chairman of MANNA (Anglican Association of Mozambique and Angola). Dearest Sister Sheenagh, Administrator of ALMA (Angola, London and Mozambique Association). Illustrious Brother John Tasker, Representative of the Diocese of Angola in the UK. Excellencies, Members of the Government and Representatives of Political Parties. Dear Beloved Ministers of the Gospel Dear guests, my Sisters and my Brothers in the Lord. It is a great pleasure and honour on behalf of the Diocese which completes 10 years since its creation and in my personally, greetings to you all in the holy peace of God by expressing our joy at your presence, wishing you a very warm welcome. Your Grace, let me make a few remarks about this celebration: The Missionary Diocese of Angola, created by the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, which was inaugurated in August 4th, 2002 by The Rt. Revd. Job Seoka, Bishops of the Diocese of Pretoria and The Rt. Revd. Dinis S. Sengulane, Bishop of the Diocese of Lebombo, instructed by then Archbishop of Cape Town and Metropolitan of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa Your Grace Njongonkulu Winston Ndungane at the time. For its historical trajectory and transformation, the work of the Diocese was started by a British Archbald Patterson of the parish of St. Clement’s Anglican Church in Liverpool, who once inspired by the World Conference for the Evangelization of Peoples taken in Edinburgh in October 1910, taking the example of others, Patterson decided to leave his land and his family and moved to the land Angola where he came to join his friend Matthew Stober who had already begun its work on the land of Musserra Nzete (Ambrizete).
