1 Message from the Technical Program Co-Chairs

On behalf of the Technical Program Committee (TPC), we warmly welcome all of you to the 2019 International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation (ISAP 2019) in Xi’an, one of the most ancient cities in China.

With more than 155 members, ISAP 2019 TPC has worked hard and formulate a diverse and well-organized technical program, covering the interesting topics important to wireless technologies. A new record of 638 papers from 25 countries and regions has been set in ISAP2019. All the papers have been reviewed and their technical merits and interests in the community have been evaluated by the TPC members and reviewers. Finally, a total number of 540 papers have been accepted for presentations and possible publications in IEEE Xplore, including 24 invited talks. They will be presented in 60 oral sessions and 4 poster sessions from Monday to Wednesday.

The TPC has also invited 4 keynote Speakers to make interesting presentations on current research topics in wireless technologies. The TPC has also received 182 student applications for the student-paper competition. After the strict peer review by the TPC members and reviewers, 19 papers have been nominated for the final run of the Best Student Paper Competition during the conference.

This year, the TPC has adopted the blind paper review by convention of ISAP, which we believe will improve the paper quality and ensure the fairness of the reviews. In addition, all the paper submissions, reviews, and acceptances have been done on line.

On behalf of the TPC, we would like to thank all the authors for their contributions, without whom ISAP 2019 would not have been possible. We would also like to thank all the TPC members, session organizers, session chairs, reviewers, and other participants for their effort and dedication to make this technical program successful.

Last but not least, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to the students, faculty and staff from the Xidian University for their time and efforts in arranging and supporting this conference.

We wish you all an enjoyable and fruitful stay in Xi’an, China.

Sincerely, Ying Liu, Zhangcheng Hao, Jiro Hirokawa and Xiuyin Zhang, Technical Program Co-chairs

14 Keynote Speech 1 October 28 (Mon.), Room A (Ball Room - A, 1F, Building 2, Xi’an Paradise Resort) 09:00 – 09:40 Radio Propagation Modeling for 5G and Beyond Claude Oestges UCLouvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium Abstract of the talk The demand for mobile connectivity is continuously increasing, and by 2020, mobile and wireless communications will serve not only very dense populations of mobile phones and nomadic computers, but also the expected multiplicity of devices and sensors located in machines, vehicles, health systems and city infrastructures. The fifth (and beyond) generation of radio communication networks (5G, 5G+) are expected to implement technologies for supporting wireless connectivity for any rates, type of communicating units, and scenario. Whereas spectral and spatial efficiency are key challenges, in addition to constraints such as energy consumption, latency, mobility, adaptability, heterogeneity, coverage and reliability, the multi-dimensional radio channel remains central in such contexts. Multiple antenna systems (MIMO), interference recognition and management as well as cooperation among separate network nodes are inherently multi-dimensional techniques and should always be designed with a proper knowledge not only of the channel, but also of the interference. In addition, the use of higher frequency ranges (cm- and mm-waves) is investigated to address the spectrum shortage. Finally, new environments are emerging with the application of the wireless Internet of Things (IoT) in several areas. This communication aims to provide an overview of the latest trends in radio propagation, in particular in the context of 5G and beyond communication networks. Going from various radio channel measurements to state-of-the-art modeling techniques, the communication will include an overview of channel modeling activity within COST Action CA15104 (IRACON). Recent results in peer-to-peer, multi-link, vehicular and millimeter wave propagation will be described. Future research topics will eventually be outlined.

17 Keynote Speech 3 October 28 (Mon.), Room A (Ball Room - A, 1F, Building 2, Xi’an Paradise Resort) 10:40 – 11:20 Optical antenna systems for beyond 5G Hiroyuki Arai Yokohama National University, Abstract of the talk Optical bands are expected to provide tera-bps wireless link by very wide frequency band width and silicon photonics technologies developed for optical fiber communication systems. The link budget of optical wireless communication is very strict due to physically small sized antenna systems. Assuming low gain, no beam scanning antenna at user terminals, high gain more than 40dBi should be achieved by base station antennas with beam steering function. Optical phased array, a candidate for this requirement, is given by complicated feeding network, while leaky wave antenna excited by a simple feeding system provides beam steering by the use of tunable laser sources. Short range indoor communication system is a main application of optical wireless communication, avoiding outside weather conditions. To build up uniform coverage area inside room, it is necessary to extend the limited range of wavelength sweeping due to tunable laser of optical source. This talk presents the design of coverage area of indoor system by introducing multi-beam scanning optical antenna. Using multiple beams in parallel, all the coverage areas are scanned quickly with high directivity antenna. We calculate the link budget for short range system using this multi-beam scanning antenna. This talk focuses on optical leaky wave antenna to obtain high gain with beam steering and presents a novel waveguide with small perturbation by waffle structure. The optical antenna is very long in longitudinal direction for high gain beam and is excited by quasi plane wave in waveguide cross section. A conventional feeding structure is a very large adiabatic taper waveguide and is often longer than radiating part. This paper also presents a small plane wave exciter consisting of photonic band gap offset reflector not to use metallic materials. The proposed combination of waffle and photonic reflector provides antenna directivity gain more than 45dBi. This talks also presents phase-less optical antenna pattern measurement technique to evaluate the optical antenna performance.
