I would like to thank the committee of Thoroughbred Breeders’ WA for having the trust in me to take on the President’s role and for their ongoing support. I would also like to thank Ann Croucher for her time as TBWA President. It’s a tough climate for the breeding industry in Western Australia but racing is very strong, competitive and best value-for-money racing precinct in the world. WestSpeed is a worthy scheme with payouts reaching an all-time high of over $5.5 million in season 2015-16. With the increase of WestSpeed bonuses, the demand for WA bred horses will rise. This year we see four stallions confirmed to start their careers at stud in WA giving breeders a positive range of pedigrees, race performance and physique. They’re a great boost to our industry. TBWA began building some close relationships with Eastern States and Asian buyers last year to try and We wish all the farms involved the very best with their build our buying bench. In a world-class sporting precinct, this new development has the chance to provide Brent Atwell Racing WA with one of the greatest racing facilities in the southern hemisphere. TBWA President SUNSPEED WINTER 2017 3 First-season sires for WA R ommel in Command Mogumber Park freshman Rommel has the score on the board to win over broodmare owners in the Sunspeed State. A striking son of Champion Darley sire Commands, he was an Ascot winner on debut at two and extended to win the G2 WA Guineas (1600m) at three. Following a freshen-up, he was sent to Melbourne and proceeded to upstage their best sprinters in the G3 Zeditave Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield. Rommel was an outstanding sprinter-miler and covers all the bases for Mogumber Park owners Colin Brown and Fiona Lacey. “We have been watching Rommel since his early 2yo wins and always believed he would be an excellent addition to the WA stallion ranks,” Brown said. “For us to have the opportunity to stand him at stud is a tremendous opportunity. “He was the first horse to ever beat Disposition and then franked that form by going up against the best in the east and winning. He’s a stunning physical specimen by a world-class stallion who has all the attributes to make a successful sire.” Rommel won 4 times from 1000m to 1600m for Guagliardo. He cost $140,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions and there was a half-million in the bank after a career spanning just 14 starts. Commands (Danehill) was represented by his 73rd stakes winner when Tashbeeh claimed the LR Straight Six (1200m) at Flemington on May 20. His stock are renowned as tough, durable gallopers who consistently perform at the top level. Rommel’s dam I’mtoogoodtobetrue (USA) won 5 stakes races, and foaled a winner by Macho Uno, before arriving in Australia. She is a daughter of Mr Prospector-line sire Good And Tough and Rommel was her second local foal following Perth speedball Onadowntowntrain. “He was the dominant horse in the WA Guineas,” jockey Steven Parnham recalled. “He put them away at the corner and was strong to the line. We always believed he had the ability and I thought he would be cherry-ripe for a mile.” Mogumber Park will stand Rommel for an introductory fee of $5,500 (inc GST) and will also offer a range of innovative breeding rights this year. G roup 1 sire at Geisel Park Eddie Rigg has imported exciting newcomer Vert De Grece (Ire) to stand at Geisel Park Stud this year. A Group 1 2yo winner of the 2014 Criterium International (1600m) at Saint-Cloud, Vert De Grece is a son of Verglas who has done so well promoting the Grey Sovereign sireline in Australia and France. Rigg’s first foray into standing a sire at Myalup was an instant success with Group 1 stallion All American. He has returned east after a sole Sunspeed book last year, however, Rigg and Perth bloodstock agent John Chalmers are confident they’ve sourced another successful sire in Vert De Grece. “I brought Verglas to WA for the 2003 & 2004 seasons and he built up a 60% strike-rate with stakes winners like Spirited One, Ma Chienne, Grey Monarch, Bites The Dust, Royal Devotion, Sheenasaidgrey, Verossi and the Singapore champion Captain Obvious,” Chalmers recalled. “He descends from the Grey Sovereign line which has given WA outstanding sires Beau Sovereign, Metal Storm, Tribu, Cheraw & Kenvain.” Verglas was Leading Australia Sire (AEI) in 2011-12 and he’s proving to be a successful sire of sires with his sons Stormy River and Silver Frost doing well in Europe. Glass Harmonium is another of his Irish-bred sons to have won a Group 1. Imported to Australian and placed with Mike Moroney, he won the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington before retiring to Blue Gum Farm in Victoria. “Vert De Grece was a superior racehorse to his sire,” Chalmers declared. “He’s taller than Verglas, has more length and overall strength, and has an excellent temperament. “His turn of foot to win the Criterium International was nothing short of amazing and WA breeders have rarely had the opportunity to access a Group 1 winning two-year-old of his calibre.” Geisel Park will stand Vert De Grece for a $5,500 (inc gst) service fee. 4 SUNSPEED WINTER 2017 First-season sires for WA Champion 2YO by a Street Darling View Thoroughbreds has signed Champion WA 2YO colt Lucky Street to start his stud career at Mundijong. Lucky Street was a precocious sprinter of the highest order blitzing the 2015 Magic Millions 2YO Classic, Listed Perth Stakes and Group 2 Karrakatta Plate by a combined margin of 10 lengths.

THE TYRO A REVIEW OF THE ARTS OF PAINTING SCULPTORE AND DESIGN. EDITED BY WYNDHAM LEWIS. TO BE PRODUCED AT INTERVALS OF TWO OR THREE MONTHS. Publishers : THE EGOIST PRESS, 2, ROBERT STREET, ADELPH1. PUBLISHED AT 1s. 6d, Subscription for 4 numbers, 6s. 6d, with postage. Printed by Bradley & Son, Ltd., Little Crown Yard, Mill Lane, Reading. NOTE ON TYROS. We present to you in this number the pictures of several very powerful Tyros.* These immense novices brandish their appetites in their faces, lay bare their teeth in a valedictory, inviting, or merely substantial laugh. A. laugh, like a sneeze, exposes the nature of the individual with an unexpectedness that is perhaps a little unreal. This sunny commotion in the face, at the gate of the organism, brings to the surface all the burrowing and interior broods which the individual may harbour. Understanding this so well, people hatch all their villainies in this seductive glow. Some of these Tyros are trying to furnish you with a moment of almost Mediterranean sultriness, in order, in this region of engaging warmth, to obtain some advantage over you. But most of them are, by the skill of the artist, seen basking themselves in the sunshine of their own abominable nature. These partly religious explosions of laughing Elementals are at once satires, pictures, and stories The action of a Tyro is necessarily very restricted; about that of a puppet worked with deft fingers, with a screaming voice underneath. There is none" of the pathos of Pagliacci in the story of the Tyro. It is the child in him that has risen in his laugh, and you get a perspective of his history.

SATURDAY, 11 MAY 2019 SCENE SET FOR BRIGHT VAN DYCK PUTS DERBY PROSPECTS ON THE LINE AT LINGFIELD By Tom Frary BREEZE IN DEAUVILLE At this time of year, there is barely time to reflect as the races that count come thick and fast. It is not even a week since Newmarket=s Guineas were played out in what seemed like a wintry grip, but already we have a new, red-hot Derby favourite. Sir Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) forced his way past his Ballydoyle peers at a rain-hit Chester and now it is up to stablemate Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to regain kudos with the blue riband on the horizon. Sadly, Lingfield=s Derby Trial no longer carries Group 3 status and there have been many moons since High-Rise (Ire), Kahyasi (Ire) and Slip Anchor (GB) won en route to Derby glory, but last year=s G2 Futurity S. winner is the classiest participant in this listed Classic pointer for some time.
