Chestnut Avenue Santa Ana, CA 92701 Annual Organizational Meeting and Regular Board Meeting Minutes Santa Ana Board of Education Tuesday, December 17, 2019 CALL TO ORDER Board President Amezcua called the Annual Organizational Meeting and Regular Board Meeting to order at 4:37 p.m. Other members in attendance were Dr. Rodriguez, Mr. Palacio, and Ms. Torres. RECESS TO CLOSED SESSION The Annual Organizational Meeting and Regular Board Meeting recessed at 4:37 p.m. to consider student matters, existing litigation, anticipated litigation, personnel matters and negotiations update. RECONVENE ANNUAL ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING AND REGULAR MEETING The Annual Organizational Meeting and Regular Board Meeting reconvened at 6:45 p.m. Cabinet members present Dr. Rasmussen, Mr. Tauer, Dr. Jimenez, Dr. Stekol, Dr. Allen, Dr. Llamas, Dr. Helguera, Mr. Roychowdhury, Mr. Williams, and Chief Smith. Dr. Martinez was absent. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Mr. Roychowdhury, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services led the Pledge of Allegiance. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Certification of Votes from Orange County Registrar of Voters and Administration of Oath of Office to New Member to Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education Mr. Tauer acknowledged the Certification of Votes from the Orange County Registrar of Voters for new Board Member Carolyn Torres. OATH OF OFFICE Mr. Tauer called Ms. Carolyn Torres and Albert Castillo to the podium for the Oath of Office. Mr. Castillo administered the Oath of Office to Ms. Torres. ANNUAL ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING Annual Organizational Meeting: Election of Officers, Establishment of Date, Time, and Location of Regular and Special Board Meetings for 2020, and Designate Board Representative(s) to Serve on Committees and Commissions Ms. Amezcua opened the Annual Organizational Meeting. President On motion of Trustee Amezcua, seconded by Trustee Palacio, the Board of Education elected Trustee Rodriguez to serve as President of the Board of Education. Dr. Rodriguez accepted and the motion carried 5-0. Vice President On motion of Trustee Palacio, seconded by Trustee Rodriguez, the Board of Education elected Trustee Amezcua to serve as Vice President of the Board of Education. Ms. Amezcua accepted and the motion carried 4-1, with Ms. Torres voting no. Clerk On motion of Trustee Palacio, seconded by Trustee Amezcua, the Board of Education elected Trustee Alvarez to serve as Clerk of the Board of Education. Dr. Alvarez accepted and the motion carried 5-0. Establishment of Date, Time, and Place of Regular and Special Meetings for 2020 On motion of Trustee Amezcua, seconded by Trustee Palacio, carried 5-0, the Board of Education established that the regular and special meetings of the governing Board will be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, at 6:00 p.m., except as noted, in the Board room of the Administration Building, 1601 E Chestnut Avenue, Santa Ana. Moved: Amezcua Seconded: Rodriguez Vote: 5-0 Ayes: Amezcua, Rodriguez, Alvarez, Palacio, Torres By a vote of 5-0, the Board took action to approve the Workers' Compensation Compromise and Release in the amount of $71,000, for former classified substitute employee as named in closed session - Claim number SUSD-009491. Moved: Amezcua Seconded: Rodriguez Vote: 5-0 Ayes: Amezcua, Rodriguez, Alvarez, Palacio, Torres RECOGNITION/ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Family and Community Engagement in Partnership with Orange County Labor Federation Parent Civic Leadership Class Graduation Ms. Amezcua called Gloria Alvarado to the podium to recognize the parent leadership graduating class from Sierra Preparatory Academy and the first class from Romero-Cruz Academy. Orange County Bar Foundation Mr. Palacio recognized the OC Bar Foundation and called on the representatives from Project Youth Associate Director Nazly Restrepo, Board Member Eddie Quillares, and Ambassador Jesus Felix. Girl Scouts of America Ms. Amezcua recognized Girl Scouts of America. CHANGE IN ORDER OF AGENDA Classified Employee of the Month for December 2019, Manuel Martinez III Dr. Lawson recognized classified employee of the month for December, Manuel Martinez III, Plant Custodian at Fremont Elementary School. Certificated Employee of the Month for December 2019, Leah Wellikson Dr. Lawson recognized certificated of the month for December, Leah Wellikson, teacher at Fremont Elementary School. SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT Mr. Tauer congratulated Dr. Rodriguez and gave the Superintendent's Report. He announced the winter break/non- instruction which is December 23, 2019 through January 3, 2020. All students return on Monday, January 6, 2020. He also shared that Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) employees and families are planning the Caring Educators Nourishing All (CENA) Christmas event for Santa Ana families and students, on December 24, 2019, we will continue this tradition at Santa Ana Valley High School, located at 1801 S. Greenville St. Each year at CENA, Santa Ana Unified employees, community partners, families, and friends come together to provide a warm meal, toys, and books to hundreds of our students and their families on Christmas Eve. Volunteering and participating in CENA is a highlight for our families during the Holiday Season. Mr. Tauer stated that the District wide Neighborhood Canvassing - where groups of parents, staff, and students go door to door meeting their neighbors and educating them about the great things happening at their schools, will be Saturday, January 11, 2020. Dr. Rasmussen and Mr. Tauer shared their gratitude for their time here at SAUSD as Mr. Almendarez will be starting January 1, 2020 and wished everyone a Happy Holiday Season. Ogni tanto si vien meno a una promessa di matrimonio, e quando si vede una propria lettera sui giornali ci si trova tremendamente a disagio e si capisce che non si sarebbe mai aperto il proprio cuore in tale onesta e ampia misura se si fosse saputo di scrivere per il pubblico. Non che nella lettera si ravvisi qualche cosa di non vero, di poco onesto e non degno di rispetto; ma non importa: si sarebbe stati molto più riservati se si fosse saputo di scrivere per il pubblico. Mi è sembrato di poter essere franco e spontaneo e disinvolto come una lettera d'amore, sapendo che ciò che scrivevo non sarebbe stato esibito ad occhio umano prima che fossi morto, e perciò ignaro e indifferente.

Albert Einstein (…) Gli apparve davanti uno spettacolo di rara bellezza, un panorama da rallegrare l’occhio e mozzare il fiato… (…) Potrai cercare in ogni dove della terra, non troverai da alcuna parte uno scrigno prezioso come questo… (…) Anziché essere un corpo di case fosse stata una donna, Polignano mi avrebbe portato via il marito e lui si sarebbe fatto tranquillamente rapire. (Dai brani: “Polignano ieri e Polignano oggi”) Presentazione Con estremo piacere mi accingo a scrivere queste poche righe di presentazione della nuova ‘fatica letteraria’ di Carlo De Luca, il quale da anni ci offre i suoi Diorama, frutto di ricerca instancabile e contemporaneamente di quell’abnegazione che trova le sue radici nell’amore del De Luca verso la cultura in ogni sua forma. Questa volta è la forma del romanzo. Il vento caldo delle Murge, infatti, è un inedito di Vito Errico, scritto con la sapienza di chi sa coniugare i dialoghi serrati alle coinvolgenti descrizioni di paesaggi. Una scelta, quella del De Luca, fatta per farci conoscere un autore. Per farci conoscere un testo che ha il pregio di unire il vero al verosimile e io, direi con Manzoni, l’utile al dilettevole ovvero questa capacità evidente, scorrendo le pagine del romanzo di Errico, di saper intrattenere l’immaginazione nostra e parimente di saper suscitare riflessioni e confronti tra il passato, qui descritto, e il presente nel quale noi viviamo, tanto da provare la forte impressione che, pur cambiando nomi e volti, la realtà sostanzialmente resti la stessa, allora come oggi.
