After the museum, guests will head down towards the Bastakiah area – the oldest part of the city, guests will have the opportunity to see the Wind Towers which served as air-conditioners in bygone days. The narrow lanes of Dubai's Bastakiah district are home to art galleries, breezy cafes and authentic Arabic restaurants. Gain a greater appreciation of Dubai’s culture and customs at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU). Since opening in 1998, the SMCCU has been helping visitors get a better understanding of the culture and customs of the UAE. Seeing the location itself is worth the visit – it’s a beautifully restored wind tower house in the historic Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Take a seat on Bedouin-style carpets and pillows while you enjoy a selection of dishes and your local host answers questions about life in the emirate. With its motto ‘Open Doors, Open Minds’ – all questions are welcome and answered, no matter how sensitive they are. ***Kindly note that the Old Dubai City Tour is not possible on Friday morning. ***Lunch will be served at SMCCU during the cultural interaction. ***Lunch inclusive of mineral water, soft drinks and Arabic tea/coffee. I was very lucky during these years to have you as a thesis director. Your assistance was very enlightening and is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your daily comments and help, and most of all thank you for your friendship, and your support to my little family. I would like also to thank the members of my thesis committee, Dr Eric Verdeil and Professor Bernard Declève, for guiding me during these last four years. Thank you for taking so much interest in my research work, for your encouragement and valuable comments, and thank you as well for all the travel you undertook for those committee meetings. This research owes a lot to Université de Liège, and the Non-Fria grant that I was very lucky to have. Without this funding, this research work, and my trips to UAE, would not have been possible.
