Hudnut III collection L523 Biographical Note William Herbert Hudnut III was born on October 17, 1932, in Cincinnati, Ohio to William H. Hudnut Jr and Elizabeth Allen Kilborne. He graduated from Princeton University in 1954 and the Union Theological Seminary in New York in 1957. He worked as a Presbyterian minister in Buffalo, New York from 1957-1960 and Annapolis, maryland from 1960-1963 before moving to Indianapolis to serve at the Second Presbyterian Church from 1963-1972. He was then elected to the House of Representatives in the 93rd Congress as a Republican representative for Indiana's 11th district and served from January 3, 1973 through January 3, 1975. As a representaitve he served on the Public Health and Environment Subcommittee as well as the Appropriations Committee. After failing to win reelection to Congress, Hudnut moved on to win a bid for the Indianapolis mayoral campaign in 1975 and was sworn in on January 1, 1976. He was reelected as mayor three times, serving in the position until January 1, 1992. Hudnut later moved to Chevy Chase, Maryland where he served as mayor from 2002 until 2004. Hudnut III while he was in Washington D.C. ranging from 1972 to 1974 regarding his work as a member of the House of Representatives. Series 1 consists of correspondence and general papers related to his professional work and is further broken down into three subseries. Subseries 1.1 contains correspondence, publications, reports, and other papers relating to Hudnut's work in the House of Representatives and as a member of various House committees. It also contains correspondence with his constituents in Indianapolis about his political stances on various national and Indiana interests. Some of the major topics addressed are abortion, busing policies, veterans affairs, public health, environmental issues, education and labor policies, foreign affairs policies, transportation and infrastructure, and economics and trade issues. Subseries 1.2 contains correspondence and publications relating to specific bills, resolutions, and public laws that Hudnut was involved with as a member of the 93rd Congress. - Page 4 - William H. Hudnut III collection L523 Subseries 1.3 contains personal correspondence including subjects such as anniversaries and birthdays, congratulatory letters, condolences, invitations, requests, and newsletters in addition to general correspondence. Series 2 consists of correspondence, papers, publications, and books relating to the investigation of President Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal conducted by the Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities from 1973 to 1974. Series 3 consists of assorted materials such as form letters used for mass mailing, maps, and constituent mailing lists. Some of the major political figures Hudnut corresponded with or referenced are President Richard Nixon, President Gerald Ford, Indiana Governor Otis R. Bowen, Indianapolis Mayor Richard Lugar, and Vice President Spiro T. Agnew.
