2018 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The Chicago Women’s District Golf Association completed its 88th year in 2018. The following report summarizes the events of the year.

TEAM MATCH : The CWDGA conducted twenty-five days of Four-Ball Match Play this year. We are very grateful to the host clubs for their hospitality and cooperation. We also thank the club Golf Chairs and their committees who helped to make team play so successful. Congratulations to the winners and the runners-up. The Tournament of Team Champions scheduled at Park Ridge Country Club on October 2nd was cancelled due to rain.

RULES OF GOLF: Cherie Kessler and Mary Sullivan planned the 2018 Rules Seminar. This year there were three teaching stations with the CWDGA Board members and Nick Scillia from the CDGA explaining claims, concessions and most likely score. Nick later discussed with the entire group major rules changes for 2019 concerning stroke situations which must be corrected to avoid disqualification and the provisional ball. A question and answer period completed the morning.

CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT: Our host for the 87th Championship Tournament was La Grange Country Club. The course was in excellent condition and the staff and membership of La Grange did a wonderful job. Kirsten Kaltenmark organized and managed our three-day tournament and we thank her for all her hard work. The Championship winner was Linda Weinstein from Ravinia Green Country Club. Congratulations to Linda and all of the other winners.

TOURNAMENTS: CWDGA held three major tournaments in 2018. Thank you to the host clubs: Onwentsia Club for hosting our One Day Stroke Play Tournament, White Eagle Golf Club for hosting our Better-Ball of Pairs Tournament, and Riverside Golf Club for hosting our Senior Better-Ball of Pairs Tournament. We appreciate the hard work of the host clubs’ staffs, Ladies’ Golf Chair and committees, and the members of the host clubs for the privilege of playing their courses. Our Tournament Chair, Diane Mazurczak, managed each event. Congratulations to the winners.

HANDICAP: The CWDGA continues to work with the CDGA to ensure fair and accurate handicaps for all of our members. Geri McLauchlan, Handicap Chair, is the liaison between the CWDGA and the CDGA. The CWDGA continues to post all scores for Four-Ball Match Play and each of our tournaments.

COMMUNICATIONS: The ongoing update of the website, www.cwdga.org, the yearly brochure, the Handbook for Members , the CWDGA Facebook page, and the Annual Report is managed and coordinated by Communications Chair, Linda Searl, Technology Support Chair, Christine Malmgren, Web Communications Chair, Betty Hruska, and Membership Services Chair, Val Metcalf. We thank these people for their hard work and attention to detail.

COURSE RATING: The CWDGA again works with the CDGA to measure, rate, and slope our member courses upon request. This ensures that a player’s Handicap Index can transfer fairly from one course to another. Our Course-rating Chair is Sally Clissold who coordinates the course ratings.

HOLES-IN-ONE: Congratulations to all our members who made a hole-in-one in 2018. Each of these women receives a pin from the CWDGA as a memento of their achievement.

2018 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

MEETINGS: The CWDGA holds eleven board meetings during the year. Our meetings are held at Itasca Country Club. In addition, we hold our Spring meeting and Annual Fall meeting for our membership where we offer information and guidance to our member club representatives. We thank Itasca Country Club for hosting all of the CWDGA meetings.

BOARD MEMBERS: In 2018 the CWDGA Board consisted of 30 very hard-working women. I thank them for giving so much time, energy, and enthusiasm to this organization. Four CWDGA Board members are retiring this year: Assistant Rules Chair, Mary Sullivan (2006-2018), Web Communications Chair, Betty Hruska (2016-2018), the Northwest Sectional Handicap Chair, Pam Babington (2016-2018) and Past President 2005-2007 and Member-At-Large, Joan Conway (2000-2018). We thank them for their many years of service to the CWDGA. Their enthusiasm and expertise will be missed! The Slate of Officers for 2019 consists of 27 positions.

CONTRIBUTIONS: In 2018 contributions were made from the CWDGA to the Evans Scholars Foundation, the CDGA Foundation, and Women’s Western Golf Association Scholarship Fund.

2018 VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The CWDGA would like to express our sincere thanks to La Grange Country Club for hosting the 87th Championship Tournament, August 21, 22, 23, 2018. The players and the CWDGA members were very supportive on day one, playing and working in the pouring rain. Thanks to the La Grange ground staff for keeping the course in tournament condition despite the rain. We were rewarded on the next two days with perfect golfing weather.

All the flights played eighteen holes on day one. The second day the players played their match and the Championship Flight winners played a second round. The final day, following the matches, everyone enjoyed a champagne toast and lunch on the patio compliments of the CWDGA.

Forty-eight players represented twenty-five participating clubs.

Congratulations to the winner, Linda Weinstein, from Ravinia Green Country Club and the Runner-Up, Ellen Rehm, from Butterfield Country Club.

2018 HANDICAP CHAIR’S REPORT

The CWDGA Handicap Chair’s responsibility is to oversee the administration of Club member handicaps and to help with decisions regarding handicap issues. In addition, the Chair is responsible for handicapping, preparing the appropriate reports for tournaments scheduled during the summer season, and posting of tournament scores from all CWDGA tournaments. The Chair is also responsible for hosting a breakout session at the Fall Meeting dealing with the handicap system and CWDGA member club handicap chair issues.

CWDGA Member club handicap chairs have specific duties and responsibilities. Please refer to 2018 Handbook for Members, page 136, DUTIES OF CLUB HANDICAP COMMITTEE and The USGA Handicap System Manual which was distributed at our Spring Meeting. See Section 8, Handicap Committee Responsibilities. Please note the Compliance Checklist . Be knowledgeable about posting of home, away, tournament and winter scores. This is important for equality in playing golf and tournaments.

All of our member clubs have been certified and are currently members of the Handicap Posting System through the Chicago District Golf Association. The CWDGA posting season is from April 1 through October 31.

It has been a pleasure serving as the CWDGA Handicap Chair. My sincere thanks to the officers and members of the CWDGA board for their assistance during this past season. If you have any questions regarding the handicap system or posting of scores, please do not hesitate to contact me.

2018 RULES CHAIR’S REPORT

CWDGA presented its 17th Annual Rules Seminar on May 9, 2018 at Itasca Country Club. Although the weather did not cooperate, we used the ballroom for our on course section. This was followed by a discussion of provisional balls and errors that must be corrected to avoid disqualification. Nick Scillia from the CDGA briefly discussed the changes the 2019 Rules Revision will bring. This was followed by a question and answer session.

Invitations to the Rules Seminar are sent to all CWDGA members via email. The seminar is free of charge, and members are able to register on the CWDGA website. We offer one Seminar each year.

The 2019 Rules Seminar will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at Itasca Country Club. Online sign- up will be available early in 2019.

2019 will be a major Rules change year. The CWDGA hopes to have Rules materials for 2019 available at the Fall Meeting. Rules materials will be available for sale at the 2019 Rules Seminar as well as all CWDGA events and tournaments. We are working with the USGA to provide education to all our members regarding these changes that go into effect January 1.

Since 2007, the CWDGA website has included a Rules of Golf Section. During 2018, a golf Rule and/or question along with the answer were presented on a monthly basis. Many of the questions are taken from situations that have occurred in CWDGA team match play and tournaments. This will be continued during 2019.

The Chicago Women’s District Golf Association is always available to provide assistance in the interpretation of the Rules of Golf. We answered many questions from our member clubs throughout the year and will continue to be available to do so.

It has been a pleasure to work with the CWDGA Board and the CWDGA member clubs during 2018. Mary Sullivan, the Assistant Rules Chair, has been an invaluable resource.

Method of Reporting The financial statements are prepared on the cash basis of accounting. The cash basis of accounting is a comprehensive basis of accounting other than generally accepted accounting principles. Under this method, revenues are recognized when received, rather than when earned, and expenses when paid, rather than when incurred. Basis of Presentation Net assets of the Association are unrestricted. Therefore no separate classifications of assets restricted by donors, temporarily or permanently, are reflected in these financial statements. The only asset of the district is cash, which is available currently. Revenues Membership dues are recorded when received. As membership in the Association is voluntary, it is impractical to record membership dues as revenue when billed, since membership can be terminated at any time. All other support revenue is also recorded when received, and not when billed. Income Taxes The Chicago Women’s District Golf Association is exempt from income taxes under section 501(c)(7) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Association was granted tax-exempt status January 5, 1994. Accordingly, no provision for income taxes is reflected in these financial statements. NOTE 2 – CASH AND CASH EQUIVALENTS Cash and cash equivalents are considered to be cash on hand, demand deposits and short-term investments with original maturities of three months or less from the date of acquisition. The Association maintains a checking account and a certificate of deposit with Northern Trust Company in Barrington, Illinois. As of August 31, 2018, the Association’s book balance of cash and cash equivalents amounted to $35,186. All funds are insured to $250,000 by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The Association’s deposits and investments are subject to the following types of risk: Custodial Credit Risk – The Association’s deposits with banks are subject to risk to the extent they are not fully insured or collateralized. The Association’s investment policy minimizes this risk by requiring all deposits above the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) limit of $250,000 to be collateralized by the pledging of additional securities by a third party institution in the Association’s name. Interest Rate Risk – Changes in market interest rates will adversely affect the fair value of an investment. Instruments with longer maturities will generally have greater sensitivity to interest rate risk. The District does not have a policy regarding interest rate risk. However, this risk is managed by structuring the investment portfolio so securities mature to meet cash requirements for current operations avoiding the need to sell securities on the open market before maturity. NOTE 3 – CONTINGENCIES AND COMMITMENTS The Association is not aware of any pending litigation or potential undisclosed liabilities that management believes would have a material effect upon the financial position of the Association. The Association is exposed to various risks of loss related to torts; theft of, damage to and destruction of assets; errors and omissions; and natural disasters. These risks are covered by commercial insurance purchased from independent third parties. There has not been any significant changes in insurance coverage since the prior year. Settled claims from these risks have not exceeded commercial insurance coverage for the past three years. NOTE 4 – SUBSEQUENT EVENTS Management evaluated events and transactions that occurred after the balance sheet date for potential recognition and disclosure through October 3, 2018, the date on which the financial statements were available to be issued.
