December 2012 Proceedings From Golf’s Use of Water: Solutions for a More Sustainable Game PRESENTED BY THE Hilton DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center Dallas, Texas November 6 and 7, 2012 Golf’s Use of Water: Solutions for a More Sustainable Game brought together experts from government, business, academia and golf to identify and discuss the most challenging issues regarding golf’s use of water. With communities continually working to provide sufficient quantities of safe drinking water, it is understandable that water use for recreational purposes is heavily scrutinized. While golf courses contribute to communities by provide green space, positive economic impact and recreation for those who play the game, it also is true that golf course irrigation is a necessary component of their management. It is the responsibility of golf’s leadership to ensure that our most valuable natural resource is used in the most forward -thinking, responsible manner. • JAMES A. BAKER, III the Case for Pragmatic Idealism Is Based on an Optimis- Tic View of Man, Tempered by Our Knowledge of Human Imperfection
Extract from Raising the Bar: The Crucial Role of the Lawyer in Society, by Talmage Boston. © State Bar of Texas 2012. Available to order at texasbarbooks.net. TWO MOST IMPORTANT LAWYERS OF THE LAST FIFTY YEARS 67 concluded his Watergate memoirs, The Right and the Power, with these words that summarize his ultimate triumph in “raising the bar”: From Watergate we learned what generations before us have known: our Constitution works. And during the Watergate years it was interpreted again so as to reaffirm that no one—absolutely no one—is above the law.29 JAMES A. BAKER, III The case for pragmatic idealism is based on an optimis- tic view of man, tempered by our knowledge of human imperfection. It promises no easy answers or quick fixes. But I am convinced that it offers our surest guide and best hope for navigating our great country safely through this precarious period of opportunity and risk in world affairs.30 In their historic careers, Leon Jaworski and James A. Baker, III, ended up in the same place—the highest level of achievement in their respective fields as lawyers—though they didn’t start from the same place. Leonidas Jaworski entered the world in 1905 as the son of Joseph Jaworski, a German-speaking Polish immigrant, who went through Ellis Island two years before Leon’s birth and made a modest living as an evangelical pastor leading small churches in Central Texas towns. James A. Baker, III, entered the world in 1930 as the son, grand- son, and great-grandson of distinguished lawyers all named James A.

  • Columbia Country Club | Chevy Chase, Maryland Golf Course Superintendent
Columbia Country Club | Chevy Chase, Maryland Golf Course Superintendent About the Club Columbia Golf Club was organized in the District of Columbia in September of 1898. The game of golf was introduced with three holes played around the Club in 1898 but the first property was sold in 1909. The Club was reformed into Columbia Country Club by 200 of its original members and by 1911 the club had selected its present location and constructed a Clubhouse and golf course. Columbia Country Club’s golf course was designed by member Dr. Walter Harban assisted by Herbert Barker, professional of Garden City Golf Club. Walter Travis amended the course in 1917 and although the course’s reconstruction involved changing features it remained true to the original design and is the basis of the routing of the Columbia Country Club course as it exists today. Championship golf has a home at Columbia Country Club including the 1921 US Open Championship won by Jim Barnes. The runner up was none other than Fred McLeod, Columbia Country Club’s first head professional who was an accomplished professional golfer. The Club has hosted a number of other state, regional and national golf championships, including the U. S. Boys Amateur Championship won by Brian Harman in 2003. The Club will host its 3rd USGA championship this summer with the 2021 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship in July. The course is parkland style and features ryegrass fairways and tees and poa annua greens. The course plays from 5,191 yards to 6,808 yards with par of 70 for men and 74 for ladies.
