HINDUISM IN EUROPE Stockholm 26-28 April, 2017 Abstracts 1. Vishwa Adluri, Hunter College, USA Sanskrit Studies in Germany, 1800–2015 German scholars came late to Sanskrit, but within a quarter century created an impressive array of faculties. European colleagues acknowledged Germany as the center of Sanskrit studies on the continent. This chapter examines the reasons for this buildup: Prussian university reform, German philological advances, imagined affinities with ancient Indian and, especially, Aryan culture, and a new humanistic model focused on method, objectivity, and criticism. The chapter’s first section discusses the emergence of German Sanskrit studies. It also discusses the pantheism controversy between F. W. Schlegel and G. W. F. Hegel, which crucially influenced the German reception of Indian philosophy. The second section traces the German reception of the Bhagavad Gītā as a paradigmatic example of German interpretive concerns and reconstructive methods. The third section examines historic conflicts and potential misunderstandings as German scholars engaged with the knowledge traditions of Brahmanic Hinduism. A final section examines wider resonances as European scholars assimilated German methods and modeled their institutions and traditions on the German paradigm. The conclusion addresses shifts in the field as a result of postcolonial criticisms, epistemic transformations, critical histories, and declining resources. 2. Firstly, the paper discusses the history and place of contemporary Hinduism within the religious map of Lithuania. -

Leibniz on Consciousness and Self-Consciousness Rocco J. Gennaro [Final version in NEW ESSAYS ON THE RATIONALISTS, Oxford U Press, 1999] In this paper I discuss the so-called "higher-order thought theory of consciousness" (the HOT theory) with special attention to how Leibnizian theses can help support it and how it can shed light on Leibniz's theory of perception, apperception, and consciousness. It will become clear how treating Leibniz as a HOT theorist can solve some of the problems he faced and some of the puzzles posed by commentators, e.g. animal mentality and the role of reason and memory in self-consciousness. I do not hold Leibniz's metaphysic of immaterial simple substances (i.e. monads), but even a contemporary materialist can learn a great deal from him. 1. What is the HOT Theory? In the absence of any plausible reductionist account of consciousness in nonmentalistic terms, the HOT theory says that the best explanation for what makes a mental state conscious is that it is accompanied by a thought (or awareness) that one is in that state.1 The sense of 'conscious state' I have in mind is the same as Nagel's sense, i.e. there is 'something it is like to be in that state' from a subjective or first-person point of view.2 Now, when the conscious mental state is a first-order world-directed state the HOT is not itself conscious; otherwise, circularity and an infinite regress would follow. Moreover, when the higher-order thought (HOT) is itself conscious, there is a yet higher-order (or third-order) thought directed at the second-order state. -

Not all of us were given it in 2014. Many of us saw the transition of loved ones in 2013 and are adjusting to a new reality without them. I know however, that their last gift to us is a reminder to get our house in order, so that when the moment of our own transition arises, we are ready to move into it in grace, peace and joy, and with a sense of accomplishment. Recently, I read somewhere, “So many people complain that there is never enough time and yet they live as though they had all the time in the world.” I am still pondering the insightfulness of these words. When I preside over memo- rial services, I remind us all that whatever it is we have put aside, on the back burner until later, our passed loved ones are saying to us on their departure: “What are you waiting for? When do you think you’ll have enough time to take care of these things? What if you run out of time? Bring these things forward now. Whatever needs mending, fixing, healing and releasing, take care of it now!” The only right time to take care of anything is NOW. This is a great time of year to decide to work on that list of back burner things, and one by one take care of them. -
South Asian Muslims, Sikhs, and Hindus in the Us
1 RELIGION, MIGRATION, AND STATE POLICIES: SOUTH ASIAN MUSLIMS, SIKHS, AND HINDUS IN THE US Karen Leonard, UC Irvine – Paris 2005 South Asian Muslims, Sikhs, and Hindus in the US confront co-religionists in a new national religious landscape. They bring different national histories with them, coming predominantly from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, where state policies toward religions varied at the establishment of the states (India and Pakistan in 1947, Bangladesh in 1971) and have changed over time. India began as a secular pluralistic democracy in 1947, but unlike the US the state actively teaches about and promotes all religions to some extent; India is predominantly Hindu but has many religious minorities, Muslims being the largest at 12-13% of the population. Article 25 of the Constitution of 1950 guaranteed freedom of religion to all Indian citizens, while Article 44 stated that a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would be developed and implemented in the future. Although the Hindu Code Bill of 1955-56 standardized and replaced the multiple caste and regional variations of Hindu law that regulated Hindu domestic lives, the UCC has not been achieved. Sikhs have, controversially, been included as Hindus under the UCC, but India’s Muslims (and Christians) still have their own systems of religious law. India’s commitment to secularism has waned in recent decades as politicians talk of Hinduism as a way of life, not really a religion, and of “Hindu” as a national identity that all citizens should claim; possibly the Indian National Congress victory over the BJP in 2004 indicates a reversal of this rising tide of Hindu nationalism. -

The term applies to all countries in which religion is incorporated into the form of government. Democracies are characterized as secular or religious.The definition of democracy is disputed and interpreted differently amongst politicians and scholars. It could be argued if only liberal democracy is true democracy, if religion can be incorporated into democracy, or if religion is a necessity for democracy. The religiosity of political leaders can also have an effect on the practice of democracy. India is perhaps the largest and most plural society in the world where people speak an array of languages and use a wide range of scripts. All the major religions – Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, and Zoroastrianism - have an enormous number of followers in India. India is the world’s most complex and comprehensively pluralistic society, home to a vast variety of castes, tribes, communities, religions, languages, customs and living styles. -

What the Puck? The Gentle Wind Project, a Quasi-Religious New Age Alternative Healing Organization by Kayla Marie Swanson A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Religious Studies University of Alberta © Kayla Marie Swanson, 2015 ii Abstract The quasi-religious space is important for examining groups and organizations that exhibit qualities of both the sacred and the secular, particularly when groups have a vested interest in being perceived as either secular or sacred. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the Gentle Wind Project, a quasi-religious, New Age alternative healing movement, and to demonstrate how the group fit the category of quasi-religious. First I examined the category of quasi-religion, using Scientology and Transcendental Meditation as two examples of it, followed by examining the religious and secular aspects of Gentle Wind. As part of the examination of Gentle Wind as a quasi-religion, this thesis also briefly explores the role of the internet for Gentle Wind and critics, as well as examines one of the main lawsuits in which the group was involved. Gentle Wind ultimately sued former members and critics over statements made about the group online, and the results of this lawsuit have implications for a long-standing debate within the sociology of religion. This debate revolves around the reliability of former member testimony regarding groups with which they were previously affiliated. In order to conduct my analysis, I followed two research methods. First, I relied heavily on primary source material regarding the Gentle Wind Project, which required me to use an archival methodology. -
