The seeds were preheated by dry and wet methods at three temperatures (50, 70 and 90 degrees C) for 10, 20, 30 and 60 minutes. The oil was extracted using the Soxhlet method with hexane. The results showed a significant change in oil acid value when heated at 90 degrees C for 60 minutes, with values of 2.76+or-0.18 for the dry method and 2.90+or-0.14 for the wet method. Volume 52 Number 18 August 10, 2007 Weather and Pests Widespread rainfall this week brought variable levels of moisture to the state. Portions of the southern agricultural areas received generous amounts of precipitation, and this has improved the prospects for late-planted sweet corn, soybeans and alfalfa regrowth. High temperatures and humidity favored an increase in some diseases that were relatively inactive during the prolonged period of dry weather. Crops in the central and northern areas remain under severe drought stress. Corn growers from the east central area report poor grain fill and attribute it to the continued dry conditions. Second and third crop hay cuttings are short and yields are generally below normal. Corn rootworm beetles are now very active and being encountered in high numbers in several counties. Investigating the Use of Buckwheat Strips for the Management of Colorado Potato Beetles in Potato Production and as an Attractant of Native Pollinators for Vine Crops 1. Project Summary This project consisted of two parts. The first was to see if buckwheat strips would attract beneficial predatory insects over to adjacent planted potato rows. My hypothesis was that Colorado potato beetle larvae would have reduced numbers due to the predation by beneficial insect predators attracted by the nearby buckwheat. Compared to the control plot where no buckwheat was planted, the treatment plots showed a significant increase in larvae reduction and predation by four species of predators. The second part of the project was to see if strips of buckwheat planted next to rows of cucumbers would attract native pollinators over to the vine crops to help improve pollination (and increase marketable fruit). Compared to the control plot where no buckwheat was planted, the treatment plots had greater numbers of native bees and wasps. There also was a significant difference between the number of marketable cucumbers and those that were misshapen due to poor pollination. 2. Introduction to Topic Cover crops have great benefits for vegetable production. The cover crops can suppress weeds, reduce erosion, act as a green manure providing nutrients, and adds organic matter back to the soil. Still with all of these fine properties, cover crops still are not as commonplace on an organic farm as they should be. Many small growers have land restrictions so that every piece is needed for production. Having some tied up in cover crops means reduced sales potential in the short run. -

ZOOLOGY FIELD TRIPS: B.Sc (BZC & MZC Entomology students) Sericulture Farm. Shadnagar (17 Sep 2019) The Department of Zoology has a study trip for the Students of B.Sc (BZC / MZC) final year (Entomology) to the Sericulture farm in Shadnagar. We have Visited Three Centers: 1. State Horticulture and Sericulture Office – a Government Institution located in Lingojiguda, Shadnagar under the supervision of Mrs. Nagaratna, disrict sericulture officer. 2. A private farm – where the larvae are reared from eggs to Pupal stage using Mulberry leaves. 3. A Forest area – where Mulberry plantation and Nursery is located. In the First place, the reeling of the Silk Cocoons is done. They purchase Cocoons from the private farm. The Cocoons are then separated based on the quality. The Finest quality of silk is produced from healthy cocoons. Each Cocoon produces 1200 meters of silk. Silk produced from 6 cocoons, is woven as one thread which is very soft & delicate, this is used in fine Kashmiri silk sarees. It weighs very less & the Silk is very soft. In some cases 12-15 cocoons are used which gives a rough texture to silk. The Second quality Cross breed cocoons are yellow in color which is usually mixed with other threads. The Third type is Double cocoons which produce Dupian silk. When unhealthy larvae form cocoons, flimsy silk is produced. In the next step, the larvae are killed inside the Cocoon by keeping them in ovens. The dead cocoons are stored in large trays in big racks in a room. The trays are numbered & dated. Everyday few cocoons are taken for reeling.
