The Year 4 and 5 children have been going out every week to Les Quennevais for their swimming lessons, which they say they love doing. One of the WrittenNews by Evelyn, Emily, Jessica and Harriet children in Ye ar 4 says that he is already in training for the Swimarathon (which he has to wait a whole year for until he can be in the team, so he will be very fast by then). Christmas was a busy and exciting time for We have had some great visitors who have come to our school too. Year 5 get to have clarinet teachers every week. They have already learned how to play two pieces of music us at St Lawrence Primary School. One of and they are going to perform a concert in our Parish Church in Apri l. On Australia day the highlights has to be the pantomime, one of the children’s dads came to assembly and played his didgeridoo for us, which the although the church service was also really whole school really enjoyed. It has certainly been a very musical start to the year! At our school, we have special core values. We believe that it’s important to be good. The pantomime was called ‘Jersey Jack independent and responsible and this is how we will be successful. One of the ways we and the Beancrock’ and it was a parody of the aim to learn independence and responsibility is to run our own clubs. These have become traditional tale, Jack and The Beanstalk. Our very popular this term and we now have seventeen clubs running which range from Quiz club to Adventure club to Dance club. There really is something for everyone. When we teacher, Mrs Mc Cartney wrote it and asked members of the quiz club why they enjoy having a club run by other children, they directed our acting. It was lots of fun said that their club leaders write out a lot of questions and get very organised before club begins, to make sure we have a good time. They also like it that they get to earn bronze dressing up in our various costumes. The and silver awards as their general knowledge increases. There is an Adventure club which Glorious Mothers in the show (who were the Year 4 children run for the younger children who are in Year 1 and they have been actually boys) had the audience in stitches of making art out of natural materials they can find in the Squirrel Garden. She said that it was very good, which made us feel proud.

We have spoken to the younger children about what they think we could do at St Lawrence Primary School to make it even better. Even though they all said it is the best Primary School in the Island, they still had some good ideas. One of the children we asked said that it would be good if we could get some new play equipment. Fortunately, we have a brilliant PTA who have said they will raise money so we can get a brand new Trim Trail, which is a bit like an obstacle course. We can hardly wait until this is built and our amazing caretaker has already made a good start on getting the garden ready for it. We always try our hardest to do well in our lessons at St Lawrence and one of the ways the teachers help us to do our best is to think of fun ways we can learn new things. We interviewed some of the children in Year 5, who especially like the way they get to learn their Maths by singing rhymes to help them remember about prime numbers, the properties of tricky shapes and times tables. It has been really great fun going on our school trips which have helped us understand our new projects better. The Year 3 children have recently been finding out about Fair Trade Products. They went to Grande March supermarket in town to complete a Fair Trade Treasure hunt. They were impressed by the number of Fair Trade products they Las laurentins-ED59 SPRING-2018-Q1.qxp_Layout 1 26/02/2018 15:40 Page 19

Peter Blake My role on the Committee is in charge of building our floats. I joined St Lawrence Battle of Flowers four years ago and continue to be involved because it's great fun and there is a good community atmosphere. For me, the best float so far was last year's ‘Nuns with Bad Habits’ as everyone was having fun that is what Battle is all about. I would encourage people to get involved as it is part of Jersey’s heritage and you will make a lot of new friends. My funniest Battle moment has to be when we did the ‘Tiki Hut’ float in 2016 - I was guiding and everyone on the float was jumping up and down to the music, causing the float to bounce and at times the tyres left the road surface. Our poor driver! Kevin Smyrk I am on the Committee from a building perspective along with Peter. My main Above: Brian Harcoil, na HeathTi responsibi lities this year are rear guider, electrics, music and building one of the main pieces on the float. I have always taken an active role in the building and I sometimes think that people do not realise just how much goes on in the background throughout the year to get the float to the flowering stage. Whether that is Committee meetings, building both floats, fundraising, member events, sourcing products and costumes, mixing the music, lighting, marquee repairs and preparation… the list goes on and on, hundreds of hours go into getting to the point where the float is ready for flowering and then Battle week hits us and what an amazing experience that is! I first got involved in 2007 with my family - it was the ‘Red Arrows’ float and we loved it. That first year, I said I would just do the building, but a few days before the parade I got roped into walking behind the float “to make up the numbers”, this ended up with me dancing (if that’s what you call it) to the Dambusters theme tune with my wife Jo, and we had such a good day and night parade. Life in those days was very different - we were building in Les Marais Riding School and had just over 30 days to build and flower a float, so the pressures wa really on. The worst part was having to break the float back to the bare chassis 2 days after finishing it and then driving it to a field near Hamptonne where it had to reside for the next 10 months. That was heart breaking! I do Battle for the way it makes me feel. As a guider/driver on Battle day, we get up at 4am to move the float and get home at 10pm after the Battle meal. The following morning, we have to prepare the float for the night parade and eventually get home at about midnight. Taking all that into account, we must all be bonkers but the things that make it all worthwhile are the friends I have made, the teamwork involved, the thrill of the parade and the sense of achievement at Above: Elizabeth Pallot, Susan Parker, Ellen Lusby, creditJersey Evening Post helping to produce a great parish float. I loved the ‘Red Arrows’ float as it was our first and Treasure Island as this was our float and a labour of love, but I think my favourite was ‘Down Under’. That year we won the Most Humorous Award and the float had everything. It was funny, great shapes, good music, Dame Edna with Ant & Dec and I built the 7ft kangaroo on the front. For the night parade, it looked stunning and really came alive with the fire and rope lights running along Sydney Opera House. I think people should get involved as it is like nothing else you will ever do - it shows you what can be achieved with teamwork. You meet new people, you all create something amazing and both Battle parades are very different but both make you feel proud and happy, what more could you ask for? There have been lots of funny moments, such as crashing Red1 (the lead Red Arrow) coming out of Les Marais, the float catching fire, dancing with Peter at the front of the Tiki float, the banter that goes on down the microphone between driver and guiders and realising that I was more colour blind than I realised, so don’t ever ask for my opinion on colours. But the funniest thing must be when I fell off the float when I was trying to break up the kangaroo – it was obviously rather Above: Red Arrows 2007 with pilot Bethany Smyrk attached to me!u Continued on page32 Las laurentins-ED59 SPRING-2018-Q1.qxp_Layout 1 26/02/2018 15:41 Page 32

Skeet Home International By Chris Settle Team Captain A team of Jersey clay target shooters from the Lecq Clay Target Club, captained by local parishioner, Chris Settle, recently travelled to Dungannon in Northern Ireland to compete in the GKth English Skeet Home International competition.

This clay shooting competition is held annually between the home nations; This was Jerseys best showing at a Home International for many England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Isle of Man and Jersey. years.
