The Northern Cardinal was officially named the State of in 1943. Male cardinals are easy to spot because of their feathers, while females are reddish-gray. Just leave some sunflower seeds in the bird feeder all year long to attract this backyard favorite!

Like the Northern Cardinal, the Blue Jay has a pointed crest on the top of its head. They are easy to spot because of their bright blue . Blue Jays love to drink from bird baths!

The American Robin is one of North Carolina’s most common birds. It arrives in late winter to let us know spring is on the way! They can often be seen pulling worms out of the ground for food. They’ll eat out of backyard bird feeders, too!

Red-bellied woodpeckers love to climb on tree trunks and peck out bugs from the bark with their pointed beaks. They also have very long tongues that can grab insects inside dead trees. Their bright red heads make them easy to spot!

Hummingbirds are very tiny and only measure about three to five inches long. They feed on the nectar found in flowers. Hummingbirds can flap their little wings over 50 times a second, and fly VERY fast!

Bluebirds are among the most colorful of North Carolina’s common birds. They like to live in open fields and meadows, but will nest in special boxes made just for them that can be placed on a pole.
