  • Annuals for Your Xeriscape
ANNUALS FOR YOUR XERISCAPE Craig R. Miller Parks & Open Space Manager www.cpnmd.org Characteristics of the Best-Drought Tolerant Annuals An annual is a plant that completes its life cycle, from germination to the production of seeds, within one year, and then dies. The best-drought tolerant annuals tend to have smaller leaves, which minimize moisture evaporation. The leaves may be waxy to retain moisture, or they may be covered with silvery or white hairs to reflect light. Drought-tolerant annuals often have long roots so they can reach for moisture deep in the soil. How to Grow Drought-Tolerant Annuals Even drought tolerant plants need a little extra water when they're getting established, so don't just plant and run. Water well while your annuals are settling in, then watch for signs of wilt as the summer progresses. Typically, drought-tolerant annuals require very little care. Most are happy with a deep watering whenever the soil is relatively dry. Most don’t tolerate bone dry soil. Check container plants often! Fertilize regularly throughout the blooming season to support continued flowering. Pinch seedlings at least once or twice to promote bushy growth and deadhead wilted blooms regularly to prevent plants from going to seed early. As a general rule, plants that are suitable for sun or shade are also well suited for containers. Just be sure the plants that share a container have similar needs. Don’t plant sun-loving plants in the same pots as annuals that need shade, or very drought-tolerant annuals with water loving plants.

  • Organic Paint(Ing)S: from Representation to Collaboration
Journal of the International Colour Association (2021): 26, 30-40 Lotut Organic paint(ing)s: from representation to collaboration Zoriana Lotut Institute of English Studies, University of Warsaw, Poland Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, École des Arts de la Sorbonne, France Emails: [email protected]; [email protected] Due to the multifaceted nature of colour phenomena, it is important to specify that the artistic practice described in this paper focuses on the materiality of colour, or the notion of colour-materials, i.e., material substances capable of creating chromatic effects. This artistic project aims to present colour- material as an autonomous and self-sufficient subject of artworks. For the purpose of demonstrating this, the organic pigment anthocyanin is chosen. Anthocyanins are organic pigments that are found in the leaves, petals, and fruits of a variety of plants. Together with carotenoids and flavonoids, the anthocyanins constitute the ‘palette’ of flora, and their function is to attract pollinators, protect the plants from ultraviolet light and repel predators. Previously, anthocyanins were used as paint; they have been mentioned in numerous historic colour recipes as a source of purple dyes or inks. However, this fragile, organic colourant could not withstand the rivalry of the constantly evolving and improving dyes and pigments. Anthocyanins were ousted from the domain of arts and textile dyeing because they could not provide sufficient colour stability, which is one of the most sought-after qualities in colours. On the contrary, nowadays, due to the growing concerns about the environmental threats from the extensive use of synthetic dyes, many are looking for alternative organic and environmentally friendly colours, even if they are impermanent.

PINK-TO-RED CORAL: AGUIDE TO DETERMINING ORIGIN OF COLOR Christopher P. Smith, Shane F. McClure, Sally Eaton-Magaña, and David M. Kondo Pink-to-red coral has a long history as an ornamental gem material in jewelry, carvings, and sculptures. However, due to a variety of environmental and legal factors, the supply of high- quality, natural-color coral in this color range has dramatically decreased in recent years— and the quantity of dyed coral on the market has increased. From a study of more than 1,000 natural- and treated-color samples, this article summarizes the procedures that are useful to identify the color origin of pink-to-red coral. A variety of techniques—including magnifica- tion, exposure to acetone, and Raman analysis—can determine if the color of a piece of such coral is dyed. Although there are limitations to the use of magnification and acetone, Raman analysis can establish conclusively that the color is natural. oral is an organic gem material that has been This limitation has led to the practice of dyeing used for ornamental purposes (figure 1) for pale-colored and white coral into the more highly C several thousand years (see, e.g., Walton, valued shades of pink to red.
