The Maturation of Russell Westbrook
The Maturation of Russell Westbrook Khris Matthews-Marion Contributing Writer, Sports Radio America “I think Russell’s demeanor and his aggression is what the DNA of a team should be. He’s aggressive and he’s unapologetic about the way he plays. “I believe Russell has the same mentality that I have had, which is that criticism doesn’t matter.” -- Kobe Bryant on Russell Westbrook’s development. Oklahoma City – When he was drafted fourth overall by the Seattle Supersonics in the 2008 NBA draft, analysts struggled to come up with a player comparison for him. Marc Jackson compared him to Gary Payton and because of his rebounding ability; the media tabbed Rajon Rondo as the best example of what he could turn into. Still, others thought he was built in the Steve Francis mold. However, it may be the Black Mamba, in terms of intensity and eye- popping athletic ability, who may be the closest and best equivalent when looking at the future of Russell Westbrook. Kobe Bryant is arguably the greatest player the NBA has seen in the last thirty years not named Michael Jordan. He has been the heartbeat of LA's most historic team for almost two decades and has hoisted the Larry O'Brien trophy five separate times. His comments during ESPN Grantland's Basketball Hour were revealing about the level of respect he has for a man who is walking down a similar path. His experience, success, basketball acumen and specifically his relationship with Shaquille O'Neal made him a perfect candidate to judge the maturation of man who is escaping the shadow of an established star. -

Tolliver Calls Game-Winning Rebound in Hawks Win Over Bucks
Tolliver calls game-winning rebound in Hawks win over Bucks By Chris Vivlamore The Atlanta Journal-Constitution MILWAUKEE — Anthony Tolliver called it. Not a game-winning shot but a game-winning rebound. Tolliver’s rebound of a missed free throw by teammate Dahntay Jones with 22.4 seconds remaining preserved the Hawks’ 104-99 come-from-behind victory over the Bucks Sunday afternoon. With a one-point lead, 100-99 after Jones’ first free throw, Tolliver looked at Jeff Teague and told his teammate a missed shot would be all his. “Yeah, I told him right before it happened, ‘I am going to get this rebound,’” Tolliver said. “I just tried to analyze the situation. I knew he has missed a few free throws earlier so I just wanted to be aggressive toward the rebound. I saw an opportunity. They didn’t box me out and I jumped and it came to me.” Tolliver called timeout after gathering the loose ball forcing the Bucks to foul. Al Horford and Teague each made two free throws in the closing seconds for the final margin. The rebound may not have been the biggest play of the game by Tolliver. He set up Jones’ free throws with a steal seconds earlier. With the game tied at 99-99 after the Hawks erased a five- point deficit with 2:45 remaining and a Bradley Center crowd cheering wildly, Tolliver tipped a pass intended for J.J. Redick that Jones gathered before being fouled. “I was face guarding, being up, on J.J. Redick,” Tolliver said. -

HAWKS’ TRIO HEADLINES RESERVES FOR 2015 NBA ALL-STAR GAME -- Duncan Earns 15 th Selection, Tied for Third Most in All-Star History -- NEW YORK, Jan. 29, 2015 – Three members of the Eastern Conference-leading Atlanta Hawks -- Al Horford , Paul Millsap and Jeff Teague -- headline the list of 14 players selected by the coaches as reserves for the 2015 NBA All-Star Game, the NBA announced today. Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors earned his first All-Star selection, joining teammate and starter Stephen Curry to give the Western Conference-leading Warriors two All-Stars for the first time since Chris Mullin and Tim Hardaway in 1993. The 64 th NBA All-Star Game will tip off Sunday, Feb. 15, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The game will be seen by fans in 215 countries and territories and will be heard in 47 languages. The Hawks’ trio is joined in the East by Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat, the Chicago Bulls’ Jimmy Butler and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kyrie Irving . This is the 11 th consecutive All-Star selection for Wade and the 10 th straight nod for Bosh, who becomes only the third player in NBA history to earn five trips to the All-Star Game with two different teams (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kevin Garnett). Butler, who leads the NBA in minutes (39.5 per game) and has raised his scoring average from 13.1 points in 2013-14 to 20.1 points this season, makes his first All-Star appearance. -

Administration of Barack Obama, 2016 Remarks Honoring the 2016
Administration of Barack Obama, 2016 Remarks Honoring the 2016 National Basketball Association Champion Cleveland Cavaliers November 10, 2016 The President. Hello, everybody! Welcome to the White House, and give it up for the World Champion Cleveland Cavaliers! That's right, I said "World Champion" and "Cleveland" in the same sentence. [Laughter] That's what we're talking about when we talk about hope and change. [Laughter] We've got a lot of big Cavs fans here in the house, including Ohio's Governor, John Kasich, and his daughters Emma and Reese. We've got some outstanding Members of Congress that are here. And obviously we want to recognize Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, who put so much of himself into trying to make sure this thing worked. One of the great general managers of the game, David Griffin. And the pride and joy of Mexico, Missouri—[laughter]— Coach Tyronn Lue. I also, before I go any further, want to give a special thanks to J.R. Smith's shirt for showing up. [Laughter] I wasn't sure if it was going to make an appearance today. I'm glad you came. You're a very nice shirt. [Laughter] Now, last season, the Cavs were the favorites in the East all along, but the road was anything but stable. And I'm not even talking about what happened on the court. There were rumors about who was getting along with who, and why somebody wasn't in a picture, and LeBron is tweeting—[laughter]—and this was all big news. But somehow Coach Lue comes in and everything starts getting a little smoother, and they hit their stride in the playoffs. -
