Eisenhower and approved by action of the Uni- versity Board of Trustees on May 1, 1967. The Society— the first of its kind in the nation—inducts former postdoctoral fellows at Johns Hopkins who have gained marked distinction in their fields of physical, biological, medical, social or engineering sciences, or the humanities, and for whom at least five years have elapsed since their postdoctoral work. The Committee of the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars, whose members are equally distributed among the academic divisions, elects the Scholars from the candidates nominated by the academic divisions having programs for postdoctoral fellows. Each division has the privilege of nominating up to three candidates for each election year. The Scholars are invested during the Commencement ceremony, the Commemoration Day ceremony, or on some similar occasion and are presented with a diploma and a medallion with black and gold ribbon to be worn around the neck with their academic costumes. Today we honor twelve new members who have been elected this year to the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars: Dr. Erwin H. Ackerknecht, professor emeritus of the history of medicine and of biology at the University of Zurich, is one of the world's most distin- guished historians of medicine. In addition to the histories for which he is most noted, he wrote " Medicine and Ethnology " in connection with his work during 1945-46 as a curator of anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Dr. Ackerknecht received his M. D. from the University of Leipzig and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins during 1912-1 1, working with Dr. Henry Sigerist and Dr. Owsei Temkin. He taught at the University of Wisconsin from 1947 to 1957, when he joined the Eacultj at the University of Zurich. He retired in 1971. Dr. Henry T. Bahnson, professor and chairman ol the Department of Surgery at the University ol Pittsburgh, was a pioneer in vascular ami cardio- thoracu surgery and has made significant contributions to surgery in both acquired and congenital heart disease. A graduate ol the Harvard University Medical School, he did postdoctoral work in the- Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins for five years during the period 1944-51, working with Dr. Allied Blalock. He was on the- surgerj faculty at fohns Hopkins from 1951 to 1962, and in 1963 he assumed his present post at the University ol Pittsburgh. s Dr. Bahnson is i S coordinatoi ol the I U.S.S.R Health Exchange Program on Management ol Congenital Heart Disease. Dr. Genevieve Comte-Bcllot, professor at the Ecole Centrale de Lyon and the Universite de Lyon, is a leading experimentalist in fluid mechanics and acoustics. In addition to her research in turbulence and her development of experimental methods, she has assumed national administrative responsibilities in Fiance related to engineering education and research. Dr. Comte-Bellot, who received her doctoral degree from the University of Grenoble, was a post- doctoral fellow in mechanics at Johns Hopkins during 1963-65, working with Dr. Stanley Corrsin and Dr. Leslie Kovasznay. Dr. Wilbur G. Downs, clinical professor of epidemiology at the Yale University School of Medicine, has pursued an extremely productive career in tropical medicine, working in both the field and laboratory as an epidemiologist and experimentalist. He has particularly contributed to understanding of malaria and arboviruses. A graduate of the Cornell University Medical College, Dr. Downs did postdoctoral work in the Department of Parasitology at Johns Hopkins during 1910-41, working with Dr. \V. W. Cort and receiving a master's degree in public health. He was a field staff member of the Rockefeller Founda- tion from 1941 to 1963, when he joined the faculty at Yale. Dr. Leon Eisenberg, professor and chairman of the Department of Social Medicine and Health Policy at the Harvard University Medical School, has contributed significantly to establishing child psychiatry in its important position in American clinical medicine. He has worked mainly on the issues of minimal brain dysfunction, accurate diagnosis, and hyperkinetic children in bringing attention to this special field. Dr. Eisenberg, who received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, was a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Child Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins during 1952-54, working with Dr. Leo Kanner. He taught psychiatry and child psychiatry at Johns Hopkins from 1953 to 1967, when he joined the faculty at Harvard. Dr. Clarence V. Hodges, professor of surgery and chief of the Division of Urology at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine, has contributed significantly to research on the prostate gland. He was a coauthor with Charles Huggins of the first paper describing the profound effects of hormonal mani- pulation on patients suffering from disseminated prostatic cancer. A graduate of the University of Chicago School of Medicine, Dr. Hodges did postdoctoral work at Johns Hopkins with William Scott in the Department of Urology during 1947-48. He was head of the Division of Urology at the University of Oregon Medical School for 30 years before assuming his present post at the University of Hawaii in 1979. Dr. Theodor Roller, professor of cell biology at Eidgenossische Technische Hochshule in Zurich, did pioneering work to develop new procedures that permit the direct electron microscopic study of the interaction of DNA with various protein molecules.
