This curriculum is published in Hong Kong and provides weekly Sunday School lessons to teach children. The CBL curriculum provides detailed lesson outlines and printed visual aids. The product of this thesis were 26 PowerPoint presentations to complement the lessons of one volume of the CBL curriculum. The material used was the original artwork owned by the publisher in Hong Kong. The different pictures and figures were prepared for digital use, arranged and animated according to the narrations in the respective volume. The presentations are intended to be used either in addition to or instead of the printed visual aids. The 26 multimedia files were designed as prototypes for the publisher to prepare an avenue for further exploration into this field, as educational technology is an increasing tool in children’s spiritual formation. The product was developed based on the literature review in the three areas of the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework by Punya Mishra and Matthew J. Koehler. To validate the product, a test group of twenty churches in the Philippines were provided with hardcopies of the CBL curriculum and asked to implement the lessons. For the period of six months the churches received the developed multimedia on a weekly basis. The researcher used observations, interviews and questionnaires to collect feedback concerning the implementation of the curriculum and the thesis product over a period of three months. Based on the findings, the product was evaluated and amended according to the Eternal, Synergistic Design Model by Caroline Crawford. It is recommended that the publisher should initiate further research to explore the effectiveness of the multimedia for the spiritual formation of children. iii COPYRIGHT STATEMENT (1) The author of this thesis (excluding the appendices) owns any copyright in it (the “Copyright”) and she has given Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary the right to use such Copyright for any administrative, promotional, educational and/or teaching purposes. Kathrin Woehrle _________________ (Author) (Date) iv ACKNOWLEDGMENT I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my co-worker, Susanne Döttling, who supported me faithfully during my studies at Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary, keeping up the workload in the office in Hong Kong for months. She made great sacrifices so that I could study abroad. I thank my parents and my other family members for all their support during my studies. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Clark G. Armstrong for his valuable teaching, thorough advice and continuous encouragement towards the completion of this thesis and my studies in general. He willingly accepted being my thesis advisor although it was beyond his academic duties. I thank the panelists, Dr. Carol Bestre, Dr. Daniel Behr, Dr. Floyd Cunningham, Dr. Clair Budd, and Dr. Nativity Petallar for their helpful suggestions and comments. I want to include Dr. Phillip Davis whose provoking teaching challenged my own spiritual formation. My highest regards go to Anni Dyck and Ruth Läufer who developed the Creative Bible Lessons curriculum over many years of consecrated labor. Personally, I have learned so much from them and through teaching this curriculum. I deeply thank the board of our organization, Brücke der Freundschaft e.V., for granting me the opportunity to study again, and all those who prayed for me during this time. Most importantly I owe my deep gratitude to God for guiding us to Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary and enriching my life and work significantly through these studies. v CONTENTS ABSTRACT ................................................................................................................................... iii COPYRIGHT STATEMENT ......................................................................................................... iv ACKNOWLEDGMENT .................................................................................................................. v CONTENTS .................................................................................................................................... vi LIST OF TABLES .......................................................................................................................... ix LIST OF FIGURES .......................................................................................................................... x LIST OF SHEETS ........................................................................................................................... xi CHAPTER ONE .............................................................................................................................. 1 INTRODUCTION ............................................................................................................................ 1 Background of the Study ...................................................................................................... 1 Theoretical Framework ........................................................................................................ 4 Conceptual Framework ........................................................................................................ 7 Purpose Statement ................................................................................................................ 9 Significance of the Study ................................................................................................... 10 Definition of Terms ............................................................................................................ 11 Scope and Delimitations of the Study ................................................................................ 12 CHAPTER TWO ............................................................................................................................ 14 SURVEY OF RELATED LITERATURE, STUDIES, AND WORKS ........................................ 14 Children’s Spiritual Formation in the Church .................................................................... 14 The Creative Bible Lessons Authors’ Assumptions .......................................................... 17 Bible Story Telling ............................................................................................................. 21 Pedagogical Considerations Regarding Technology .......................................................... 22 vi Educational Technology in the Church .............................................................................. 25 The Design of Multimedia ................................................................................................. 31 Educational Technology Acceptance ................................................................................. 32 Guidelines for the Use of Educational Technology ........................................................... 33 The Thesis Writer’s Technological Assumptions .............................................................. 35 CHAPTER THREE .......................................................................................................................
