12-15 SEPTEMBER 2019

WELCOME TO HAWARDEN AND THE GOOD LIFE EXPERIENCE.

Thank you so much for putting your faith in us and joining us this weekend.

This is our sixth edition. We hope it’s the best yet; more fascinating, more fun, more friendly, more beautiful and more intimate than those that came before it.

This is a labour of love that requires constant work and attention to detail. We think we’re getting better with each year and that The Good Life Experience is becoming what we dreamt it might, Britain’s best and most intimate festival of fun and discovery.

We hope that The Good Life Experience doesn’t just last for the weekend. We want it to be something you carry with you for the rest of the year; that what you experience and learn and feel this weekend will travel with you when you leave us. And that maybe you’ll share your new skills and discoveries with your family and friends.

We hope that you have a magical few days.

Love Caroline, Cerys, Steve, Charlie and The Good Life Experience Team x

NORMAN JAY MBE The ‘Emperor of the Decks’ returns to bring his Good Times setlist to the Good Life! Expect the unexpected: Oasis mixed with Gilberto Gil, , Stax, , Marley, Sly and the Family Stone and so much more… and all of it wrapped in the effortless cool of this legendary DJ. As far as we’re concerned nobody does it better.

JNR. WILLIAMS Jaws dropped at BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music alike when JNR. Williams first broke through. Cerys is stoked to welcome him to TGLE 2019 as one of his earliest forays in his career. You’ll be able to say you were there from the beginning. Think Nina Simone and James Blake and you’ll be getting close.

DAVE HASLAM Ever wondered what it would feel like to be at the Hacienda at its peak? Or with The Stone Roses playing Spike Island? DJ and writer Dave Haslam will afford us a good peak at The Good Life in 2019. Dave plays “the best records ever made one after the other”. Don’t miss this.

GUY CHAMBERS Go Gentle, Angels, Millennium, I Don’t Want to Hurt You, Rock DJ, Kids. Just some of the songs written by Guy with his writing partner Robbie Williams. Other chart smashing collaborations had Guy working with Kylie, Beverly Knight, Mel C, Katie Melua and Rufus Wainwright. Across two performances, Guy will allow us insight into the brains and soul behind these mega hits and melodies.

TANKUS THE HENGE Cerys loves their funk-fuelled repertoire, their channeling of New Orleans, Tudor England, ratty Soho alleyway, Shakespeare, 20th Century American Literature, Oliver Twist and Tom Waits. A psychedelic, rock ’n’ roll octopus (with four more legs).

ERROL LINTON Simply one of the best live acts in the world and nominated this year for best blues act by Jazz FM. There’s a buzz growing around this blues band that you don’t want to miss. Think Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson, bring them into the twenty first century by combining ‘50s Chicago blues with Jamaican reggae rhythms. Let the rafters shake.

THE TURBANS International musical adventurers The Turbans bind together music from ‘manywhere’, igniting their audiences with the bacchanalian spirit of the Eastern Mediterranean. Drawing on the rich cultural heritage of both the Levantine and Balkan regions, they create original music for the 21st century, inspired by ancient melodies.

HAVANA NIGHTS WITH THE RENE ALVAREZ QUARTET Their compadres Los Revolutionaries blew the roof off the Main Stage in 2016, and we’re smoking hand-rolled cigars with relish at the return of the new set up. The Rene Alvarez Quartet promise to bring musical ammunition to tackle even the most reluctant dancer... Havana and Hawarden collide on Thursday night!

A TRIBUTE TO HER’S Hear songs from ‘Invitation to Her’s’ and ‘Songs of Her’s’ as TGLE pays tribute to a great band that were due to perform on the Main Stage in 2019. Duo Stephen Fitzpatrick and Audun Laading met at the University of Liverpool and lived in the city before being killed in a car accident en route to a gig in California in March 2019. They were -and still are- great.

WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR , Pearl Jam and The Lemonheads are just some of the diverse influences for this indie-rock three piece recently praised for their grit and authenticity by , NPR’s Ann Powers and on Cerys’ BBC Radio 2 music show.

ESE AND THE VOODOO PEOPLE Born and raised in South London, Ese is no stage school product but the real, streetwise thing and another talent to catch early at TGLE 2019. The band were nominated by the Guardian as ‘one of the acts to look out for in 2019’.

SUB ATOMIC SOULS A chance to get out of our minds on the groove with old school rhythm & blues and funk. All soul powered, originals and classics: Albert King, James Brown, Pee Wee Ellis and all in between. Bring your Blues Brothers Ray Bans.

SNAPPED ANKLES They came from the Trees. Fight or flight. Primal motorik rhythms, the rush of white noise and post-punk angles; an aural onslaught played out on homemade log synths, electrified and sticks beating hell on taut animal skin. The woodwose have discovered electricity and they’re not afraid to use it.

INTERNATIONAL TEACHERS OF POP Lead singer Leonore Wheatley describes the group as “Grace Slick on the raz with Donna Summer and the , legging it over to ’s gaff for a quick synth-sesh before getting a cab round to All Saints gaff to sing at the telly til the sun comes up!” WORKING MEN’S CLUB Todmorden-by-way-of-Europe trio Syd, Jake and Giulia are about to fling open the doors of their own millennial social hub, fusing the ‘70s post-punk start-stop sound of Talking Heads, Gang of Four and Television with the stomp of Parquet Courts’ positivity. Half-spoken words jab through Strokes lines with Mark E. Smith drawl…

SEATBELTS Seatbelts are comprised of James Madden, Ryan Murphy, Abigail Woods and Alex Quinn. James and Ryan - known for their work in Hooton Tennis Club - wanted an alternate name for The Beatles, and while jumbling the letters around over a drunken phone call Seatbelts poured forth. Singles include ‘Content Crush’ and upbeat, ‘Spanish Songs’.

DJ78 He’s back! We love him. You love him. DJ78 provides a unique audio experience using a pair of 1930s HMV wind-up Gramophones and a staggering collection of vintage 78rpm shellac records. Looking dapper in his antique suits, DJ78 delights in unearthing vintage tunes and dropping (really) old-skool beats from his extensive archive of rare discs.

MODERN NATURE Modern Nature is the new project of Jack Cooper, ex of Ultimate Painting / Mazes and Will Young of Beak, featuring Aaron Neveu of Woods and Sunwatchers’ Jeff Tobias on saxophone.

KATY J PEARSON Combining a unique voice with a knack for melodies that lodge themselves in your brain, Katy writes songs coming from her time growing up in the rolling hills of the West Country. Her songs convey a glorious nostalgia, refreshingly at odds with the rush and fury of modern life.

TOBY JAY & JIM GHEDI Jim and Toby’s duets for the 6 and 12 string guitar are a collaboration exploring connection to landscape and place through composition, improvisation and folk song. Expect songs from 2018s ‘The Hawksworth Grove Sessions’ as well as new material.

TREVOR MOSS & HANNAH-LOU Trevor & Hannah-Lou met as teenagers in 2003 at Goldsmiths College. They would go on to become influential figures in the Brit-Folk revival. Their fifth Fair Lady London, recorded on their 4-track cassette recorder in a quiet corner of a castle in the rolling valleys of East Sussex, was released in 2018 on the Maiden Voyage Recording Co. Label.

VINTAGE MOBILE DISCO AKA Donna Somerset. This diminutive, artisan soundsystem, was lovingly assembled within a rickety old laundry truck by friends Russ and Rich. Its ethos is very much back to basics, and in reserving the old ways it has two rules; 7” vinyl only, and recorded at least 30 years ago. WILD ATLANTIC SALMON: SMOKING AND CONSERVATION WITH MAX JONES. SUN 10am-12pm  Food Workshop Tent

Join a remarkable tasting with itinerant artisan/food conservationist Max Jones as he brings a side of extremely precious fish from the last remaining artisan of exclusively wild Atlantic Salmon left in the world, Sally Barnes. With nobody to continue the tradition of smoking Wild Atlantic Salmon from Irish waters after her, Max moved from London to West Cork in Ireland, in an effort to glean as much knowledge of the dying craft as possible. Expect a tale of sustainability, integrity, nature, wild food, millennia - old fishing methods, the revelation of ancient smoke - curing craft techniques and the story of Sally, bastion of real food, swimming against the current of farmed fish and bureaucracy with as much fight as the wild fish itself. Tasting will include a side of remarkable fish from potentially the last Wild Atlantic Salmon season we will see for many years, served on traditional soda bread, unpasteurised mountain butter and cured wild salmon bottarga (roe), all paired with loose leaf tea. Revel in the knowledge that attendees will be the only ones on the planet eating that particular food! FEASTS Good food and living The Good Life go hand-in-hand.
