Inscription: lower right: John Sloan Corcoran Collection (Museum Purchase, Gallery Fund) 2014.136.54 ENTRY In August 1910 the realist painter John Sloan began this group portrait of regulars at Petitpas’, a French restaurant and boardinghouse in the Chelsea district of Manhattan. The work joined other Ashcan school artists’ depictions of casual dining experiences in urban eateries that focused on portraiture and narrative, such as At Mouquin’s by William Glackens (American, 1870 - 1938) [fig. 1]. [1] The Ashcan school, informally led by Robert Henri (American, 1865 - 1929), generally focused on the everyday life of the working classes rather than idealized views of the city. George Luks (American, 1866 - 1933) and George Bellows (American, 1882 - 1925) completed a watercolor and a print, respectively, featuring Petitpas’ as well [fig. 2], but Sloan’s large image in oil is the most ambitious of the three. [2] The scene takes place in the enclosed backyard of the restaurant, where the dining room was located in the hot summer months. The party gathers around a table placed under an awning decorated with a French flag. [3] At the head sits John Butler Yeats, smoking and sketching. Yeats, the Irish portrait painter and father of the poet William Butler Yeats, lived at Petitpas’ from 1909 until his death in 1922.

Collection of the Art Fund, Inc. at the Birmingham Museum of Art; Gift of Roy Curtis Green Produced between two of Rockwell Kent’s several extended stays in Greenland, Starlight and its austere landscape suggests such Arctic climes. Because we cannot see the central figure’s face, we are encouraged to place ourselves in his position, and thus to follow his gaze off into the starry night sky and contemplate the vastness and sublime beauty of the universe. This device hints at Kent’s interest in capturing states or conditions that transcend the individual. He once stated, “I don’t want petty self-expression. I want the elemental, infinite thing; I want to paint the rhythm of eternity.” Richard Danielpour found inspiration for First Light, composed in 1988, from Robert Duncan’s poem Four Pictures of the Real Universe. It captures the same reverence for the infinity of the night sky, broken only by the dawn: “…chords that hold the stars in their courses / outfoldings of sound from the seed of first light.” 1 Abraham Rattner (American, 1893 – 1978), Design for the Memory, 1943. U ranim danima pokazuje umjetničku vještinu crtajući karikature. Pejzažist Eugene Boudoin mu predstavlja slikanje na otvorenom, te Monet prihvaća takav izričaj. 1873. godine održana je prva izložba impresionista, na kojoj su sudjelovali, od poznatijih slikara, Monet, Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro i Alfred Sisley, ali i mnogi drugi. Iako nije polučila željeni uspjeh, na toj izložbi su dobili, ispočetka pogrdan, naziv impresioniosti, koji su naposljetku i zadržali. 1880.-tih godina Monet napokon biva prihvaćen od publike, te kasnije I kritike, a u tome mu je dosta pomogao organiziranjem mnogih izložaba kolekcionar Durand-Ruel. Počinje slikati serije slika po kojima je poznat, primjerice pročelje katedrale u Rouenu. Na tim serijama se usredotočuje na pojedini motiv kroz različita doba dana, istražujući tako svjetlosne efekte. U zadnjem djelu svoga života u Givernyu, slika posljednji i njegov najpoznatiji motiv, lopoče. 3 UVOD 19. stoljeće, vrijeme akademskog slikarstva, čvrstih formi i oštrine prikaza.

It is the century that witnessed the greatest expression of the Academic tradition and it is the era that launched modernism through the developments of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. * * * * * * * * * * * * Academic: Realism. It is best defined as an artist’s mastery of a variety of painting techniques, including the depiction of atmosphere and natural light, intended to produce a picture that mimicked reality. This style reached its height in the latter part of the 19th century. Major artists of this period include: William Bouguereau, Jean-Léon Gérome, Alexandre Cabanel, Briton Riviere, and Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Modern: Impressionism and Post-Impressionism; the commencement of modern painting. This period is the beginning of experimentation with form, color, brushwork, and subject matter leading to modern art. These artists experimented with depicting the effects of light and using expressive color and brushwork to portray both figures and landscapes. Founding members include: Claude Monet, Eugène Boudin, Camille Pissarro, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Albert Guillaumin—and their contemporaries—Edmond Petitjean, Henri Lebasque, Henri Martin, and Georges d’Espagnat. Guillaumin has recently been “rediscovered” and acknowledged for his importance within the Impressionist movement and as a major influence on Post-Impressionists including van Gogh, Paul Signac, and Henri Matisse. Here, Guillaumin creates an intimate portrait of his wife in pastel. This paper describes a demonstration of the Discovery Hub exploratory search system. The demonstration focuses on the exploration of topics through several perspectives. 1 Introduction Exploratory search refers to cognitive-consuming search tasks like learning or investigation. There is a need to develop systems optimized for supporting exploratory search as the today widely-used search engines fail to efficiently support exploratory search [1]. Linked data offers exciting perspectives in this context and several systems were already published. We want to reach a new level in linked data based exploration by allowing the users to unveil knowl- edge nuances corresponding to specific facets of interest of the topic explored. In this demonstration paper we first give a brief overview of linked data based exploratory search systems. Then we present the Discovery Hub web applica- tion and focus more particularly on its multi-perspectives exploration capacity. Finally we present the demonstration scenario we propose. 2 Linked data based exploratory search The amount of contributions at the crossroad of semantic search and exploratory search is increasing today. The linked data knowledge, and especially DBpedia, allows to design new information retrieval approaches and interaction models that efficiently support exploratory search tasks. L’enjeu est de faire de ces deux régions « la » Destination Impressionniste d’excellence pour le tourisme international. Cette ambition implique notamment de travailler sur la qualité de l’ofre et la promotion touristiques, autour d’un récit partagé par l’ensemble des acteurs. L’excellence de la Destination Impressionniste repose en efet sur des professionnels du tourisme sensibilisés pour parler avec justesse du lien entre leur territoire et ce grand mouvement d’histoire de l’art. elle est la vocation de ce document : proposer un récit de l’impression- nisme sur ses territoires auquel tous les acteurs peuvent se référer.
