Trifluoride Product Stewardship Summary June 2008

BF3

Chemical Name: Chemical Category (if applicable): Inorganic Lewis Synonyms: BF3; Boron Fluoride; Trifluoroborane CAS Number: Boron trifluoride CAS Name: 7637-07-2 EC (EINECS) Number: 231-569-5 Document Number: GPS0015 V1.0

• Honeywell is the sole manufacturer of boron trifluoride (BF3) in North America. We are committed to making the use of BF3 safer by providing specialized product knowledge and expertise to help our customers in all aspects of safe handling and use of BF3.

• BF3 is a vital catalyst for organic synthesis reactions such as: polymerization, , and isomerization. Other important uses include nucleonics, brazing fluxes for metals and alloys, manufacture of lube oil additives, production of a high purity boron isotope, a source of boron for manufacture of boranes and fluoroborates, preparation of triphenyl and tetraphenyl borates, and P-type doping in the manufacture of semiconductors.

• Due to the hazardous properties of BF3, the product should only be handled by users who have received appropriate training. For more information on BF3 and available training, please visit our website.

• BF3 is a nonflammable, colorless compressed gas with a pungent odor. If accidentally released to the air, BF3 reacts immediately with moisture to form a dense white cloud containing BF3- hydrate(s), which can be further hydrolyzed upon water contact to form strong , e.g., , fluoroboric acid and hydroxyfluoroboric acid.

• Exposure to BF3 must be avoided because the vapor is highly suffocating and irritating to the respiratory tract and exposure to liquid or vapor can produce severe irritation and possibly burns. Workplace exposure limits have been established for use in worksite safety programs. Please see the MSDS for additional information.

• Repeated exposures may cause damage to the kidneys and lungs, dental fluorosis (mottling of teeth), and low levels of calcium in blood.
