Soc. Wash. 46(2), 1979, pp. 165-170 Polypocephalus sp. (Cestoda; Lecanicephalidae): A Description of Tentaculo-Plerocercoids from Bay Scallops of the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico EDWIN W. CAKE, JR. Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, Ocean Springs, Mississippi 39564 ABSTRACT: Tentaculo-plerocercoids of Polypocephalus Braun are described from digestive gland tissues of the Atlantic bay scallop, Argopecten irradians concentricus (Say), from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. Forty-two of 55 scallops (76%) collected from four Florida bays adjacent to the Apalachicola River delta exhibited a mean infection intensity of 18.5 ± 5.5 plerocercoids/scallop. Bay scallops appear to be intermediate hosts in the life cycle of this cestode. Nine species of Polypocephalus Braun (Cestoda; Lecanicephalidae) are known worldwide (Subhapradha, 1951). Although there are no published reports of Po- lypocephalus adults in elasmobranchs from the Gulf of Mexico, their presence has been confirmed (Tom Mattis, Gulf Coast Research Laboratory Parasitology Section, personal communication). I reported tentaculo-plerocercoids of Poly- pocephalus sp. from digestive gland tissues of the Atlantic bay scallop, Argo- pecten irradians concentricus (Say) (Mollusca; Pectinidae), at St. Teresa Beach, Florida (Cake, 1972). Six additional species of larval cestodes infect bay scallops in the eastern Gulf (Cake, 1976, 1977) including three tetraphyllideans, two try- panorhynchs, and one other lecanicephaloidean, Tylocephalum sp. sensu Burton (1963). This report, which presents descriptive and infection data and proposes life cycle pathways, was derived, in part, from my doctoral research on larval ces- todes of coastal, benthic mollusks of the eastern Gulf of Mexico (Cake, 1975). Materials and Methods Bay scallops were collected while skin diving over marine grassflats in shallow coastal bays adjacent to the Apalachicola River delta in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The stomach, intestine, digestive gland, digestive diverticula, and mes- enteries of each scallop were examined with the aid of a stereo-zoom, dissection microscope. After the initial examination, all visceral tissues were held in petri dishes containing filtered seawater (ca. 30%0) and permitted to putrefy. Complete recovery of the plerocercoids required partial decomposition of visceral tissues and examination of the supernatant saline. Examinations were repeated every few hours until no plerocercoids were recovered during two or more consecutive examinations. Excysted plerocercoids were counted and either fixed, preserved, and stained using standard helminthological techniques, or maintained in glucose-enriched, artificial elasmobranch saline (vide Read et al., 1960; Hamilton and Byram, 1974) for futher study. Plerocercoids were stained with Ehrlich's acid hematoxylin and mounted in Permount. Illustrations were made with the aid of a microprojector and measurements were made with an ocular micrometer. CCB Project Design Document – July 4, 2011 Executive Summary Colombia is home to over 10% of the world’s plant and animal species despite covering just 0.7% of the planet’s surface, and has more registered species of birds and amphibians than any other country in the world. Along Colombia’s northwest border with Panama lies the Darién region, one of the most diverse ecosystems of the American tropics, a recognized biodiversity hotspot, and home to two UNESCO Natural World Heritage sites. The spectacular rainforests of the Darien shelter populations of endangered species such as the jaguar, spider monkey, wild dog, and peregrine falcon, as well as numerous rare species that exist nowhere else on the planet. The Darién is also home to a diverse group of Afro-Colombian, indigenous, and mestizo communities who depend on these natural resources. On August 1, 2005, the Council of Afro-Colombian Communities of the Tolo River Basin (COCOMASUR) was awarded collective land title to over 13,465 hectares of rainforest in the Serranía del Darién in the municipality of Acandí, Chocó in recognition of their traditional lifestyles and longstanding presence in the region. If they are to preserve the forests and their traditional way of life, these communities must overcome considerable challenges. During 2001- 2010 alone, over 10% of the natural forest cover of the surrounding region was converted to pasture for cattle ranching or cleared to support unsustainable agricultural practices.

ST.AUBIN Department of Pathology Ontario Veterinary College University of Guefph Guelph, Ontario Canada INTRODUCTION Parasites of marine mammals have been the focus of numerous reports dealing with taxonomy, distribution and ecology (Defyamure, 1955). Descriptions of associated tissue damage are also available, with attempts to link severity of disease with morbidity and mortality of individuals and populations. This paper is not intended to duplicate that Iiterature. Instead we focus on those organisms which we perceive to be pathogenic, while tempering some of the more exaggerated int~~retations. We deal with life cycles by emphasizing unusual adap~t~ons of selected organisms, and have neces- sarily limited our selection of the literature to highlight that theme. For this discussion we address the parasites of cetaceans---baleen whales (mysticetes), and toothed whales, dolphins and porpoises (odon- tocetes): pinnipeds-true seals (phocidsf, fur seals and sea Iions (otariidsf and walruses (adobenids); sirenians~anatees and dugongs, and the djminutive sea otter. ECTOPARASITES We use the term “ectoparasite’” loosely, when referring to organisms ranging from algae to fish which somehow cling to the surface of a marine mammal, and whose mode of attachment, feeding behavior, and relationship with the host or transport animal are sufficiently obscure that the term parasite cannot be excluded. What is clear is that these organisms damage the integument in some way. For example: a whale entering the coid waters of the Antarctic can acquire a yelIow film over its body. Blue whales so discoiored are known as “sulfur bottoms”.

Title: Karl Jordan: A Life in Systematics Abstract approved: Paul Lawrence Farber Karl Jordan (1861-1959) was an extraordinarily productive entomologist who influenced the development of systematics, entomology, and naturalists' theoretical framework as well as their practice. He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modem evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 193 Os and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research programs, institutional contexts, and disciplinary homes, for the sake of synthesis narratives. This dissertation redresses this picture by examining a naturalist, who, although often cited as important in the synthesis, is more accurately viewed as a man working on the problems of an earlier period. This study examines the specific problems that concerned Jordan, as well as the dynamic institutional, international, theoretical and methodological context of entomology and natural history during his lifetime. It focuses upon how the context in which natural history has been done changed greatly during Jordan's life time, and discusses the role of these changes in both placing naturalists on the defensive among an array of new disciplines and attitudes in science, and providing them with new tools and justifications for doing natural history. One of the primary intents of this study is to demonstrate the many different motives and conditions through which naturalists came to and worked in natural history.

Diphyllobothriosis caused by adults of the genera Dibothriocephalus, Adenocephalus and Diphyllobothrium is usually not a life-threatening disease. Sparganosis, in contrast, is caused by larvae (plerocercoids) of species of Spirometra and can have serious health consequences, exceptionally leading to host's death in the case of generalised sparganosis caused by ‘Sparganum proliferum’. While most of the definitive wildlife hosts of broad tapeworms are recruited from marine and terrestrial mammal taxa (mainly carnivores and cetaceans), only a few diphyllobothriideans mature in fish-eating birds. In this review, we provide an overview the recent progress in our understanding of the diversity, phylogenetic relationships and distribution of broad tapeworms achieved over the last decade and outline the prospects of future research. The multigene family-wide phylogeny of the order published in 2017 allowed to propose an updated classi- fication of the group, including new generic assignment of the most important causative agents of human diphyllobothriosis, i.e., Dibothriocephalus latus and D.

Eom* Department of Parasitology, Medical Research Institute and Parasite Resource Bank, Chungbuk National University School of Medicine, Cheongju 28644, Korea Abstract: Morphological and molecular characteristics of spirometrid tapeworms, Spirometra decipiens, were studied, which were recovered from a heavily infected stray cat road-killed in Eumseong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do (Province), the Republic of Korea (= Korea). A total of 134 scolices and many broken immature and mature proglottids of Spirometra tapeworms were collected from the small intestine of the cat. Morphological observations were based on 116 specimens. The scolex was 22.8-32.6 mm (27.4 mm in average) in length and small spoon-shape with 2 distinct bothria. The uterus was coiled 3-4 times, the end of the uterus was ball-shaped, and the vaginal aperture shaped as a crescent moon was closer to the cirrus aperture than to the uterine aperture. PCR amplification and direct sequencing of the cox1 target frag- ment (377 bp in length and corresponding to positions 769-1,146 bp of the cox1 gene) were performed using total ge- nomic DNA extracted from 134 specimens. The cox1 sequences (377 bp) of the specimens showed 99.0% similarity to the reference sequence of S. decipiens and 89.3% similarity to the reference sequence of S.
