HERPETOLOGICAL JOURNAL 17: 269–272, 2007 digenean Mesocoelium monas in Prionodactylus Short Note eigenmanni, also from Brazil. The purpose of this paper is to present an initial helminth list for Alopoglossus angulatus and A. atriventris. Parasite communities of two Nineteen Alopoglossus angulatus (mean snout–vent length [SVL] = 42.1±13.4 mm, range 24–60 mm) and 16 A. lizard species, Alopoglossus atriventris (SVL = 36.9±9.2 mm, range 21–48 mm) were angulatus and Alopoglossus borrowed from the herpetology collection of the Sam No- ble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History (OMNH) and atriventris, from Brazil and examined for helminths. Stomachs from these lizards had previously been removed and were not available for this Ecuador study. Collection localities are as follows. A New Species of Riama from Ecuador Previously Referred to As Riama Hyposticta (Boulenger, 1902) (Squamata: Gymnophthalmidae)
AMERICAN MUSEUM NOVITATES Number 3719, 15 pp. June 3, 2011 A New Species of Riama from Ecuador Previously Referred to as Riama hyposticta (Boulenger, 1902) (Squamata: Gymnophthalmidae) SANTIAGO J. SANCHEZ-PACHECO,1 DAVID A. KIZIRIAN,2 AND PEDRO M. SALES NUNES3 ABSTRACT We describe Riama crypta, new species, from the western slopes of the Cordillera Occi¬ dental, Ecuador. This taxon was formerly referred to as Riama hyposticta, a rare species described on the basis of an adult male from northern Ecuador and here recorded from southwestern Colombia. The new species differs principally from Riama hyposticta by an incomplete super¬ ciliary series, formed just by the anteriormost superciliary scale (superciliary series complete in R. hyposticta, formed by five or six scales), no nasoloreal suture [= loreal absent] (complete [= loreal present] in R. hyposticta), distinct dorsolateral stripes at least anteriorly (scattered brown spots dorsally without dorsolateral stripes in R. hyposticta), and ventral coloration com¬ posed of small cream or brown spots or longitudinal stripes (dark brown with conspicuous transverse white bars and spots). Additionally, we document the presence of distal filiform appendages on the hemipenial lobes of both species. Named as part of the Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena ‘biodiversity hotspot’ (Conservation International 2006) for its combination of great biodiversity as well as conservation threats, these forests are less than 10% intact (Dodson and Gentry 1991). The coastal deciduous and semi-deciduous forests in particular are only represented by 2% of the original intact forest cover (Dodson and Gentry 1991). Indeed, the coastal forests of all of Latin America are in peril (Murphy and Lugo 1986, Bullock et al. 1995). Once comprising at least 60% of the forested tropics, only a few percent remain. One of the biggest challenges in tropical biodiversity conservation today is to explore and protect those neotropical coastal forests in most peril of disappearing, the remaining dry forest fragments. Biodiversity The climate and geography of western Ecuador presents a unique scenario for biodiversity. Based on patterns of upwelling in the Pacific Ocean and the Humbolt Current off the coast of Ecuador, the climate of the region exhibits extreme clinal variation in climate (Cañadas 1983). More southern parts of the Ecuadorian coast are primarily influenced by the cold upwelling of the Humbolt current, which sheds little moisture to the coastline, resulting in dry climates. -
