Toni Carellas Deputy Principal ATSI STUDENT FORUM On Friday 17 March our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, along with special guests and teachers, gathered in the Dame Roma Mitchell lecture theatre to listen to some of their distinguished elders tell “their personal story” and share the journey they have taken to achieve their dreams and celebrate their success. Our guests were Rhian Miller, AIME Institute manager who is currently studying teaching at Uni SA, Mr Shane Tongerie who works within the Department for Youth Justice, Mrs Glennis Warrior, DECD Northern Area Manager, Ms Allysia Weetra, Mr Luke Booth and Mr Travis Perry- Quantas. The students were attentive listeners and provided some valuable feedback about what their take home messages were: “You have to work hard for what you want.” “Be what YOU want to be, not what others are.” “Enjoy the small moments.” “With willpower and determination you can succeed.” “Get an education and you will have the life you want.” Some excellent questions and answers wrapped up the forum and of course a lovely shared recess spread of cakes and fruit was enjoyed by all. We strongly encourage family members to join us at our next Student Forum. Many thanks to our special guests for sharing their time and experiences with us so generously. Vikki Walkom Richard Thomas Maryanne Hill Assistant Principal Aboriginal Education Aboriginal Education Worker FAREWELL TO MATSUMOTO HIGH SCHOOL At our school assembly we welcomed 13 students and a staff member from Matsumoto High School in on Tuesday 14 March. The group were hosted by GGHS families and from all accounts very close bonds were developed with the students and their host families. The students spent 8 school days at GGHS and undertook a program comprising of English lessons, cultural excursions as well as a school experience program including Aboriginal Art, Australian Cuisine and Sports classes. Students also made their own souvenir during a Design and Technologies class, where they used advanced technologies to design and make a glass memento of their stay in and our school. Our staff, as always, willingly gave their time to ensure that our international visitors had a special Golden Grove High School Experience. We especially thank Ms Deb Baker, who worked with the Matsumoto students each day on further developing their English skills. After two weeks of action packed schedule of activities, lessons and excursions, the Matsumoto High School students and staff safely returned to Japan. They took with them many wonderful memories and new friendships. We are delighted to know that Matsumoto High School will be sending another tour group this time next year. Once again, a very sincere thank you to all the host families, staff and students who provided Matsumoto students with an authentic Australian Experience. Carlos Gallardo Toni Carellas International Education Coordinator Deputy Principal NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE Friday 17 March saw GGHS turn orange for an important national event. More than 840,000 students from over 1,810 schools across Australia are standing united to send a clear message that bullying and violence are NEVER OKAY! GGHS started the day with our Peer Support leaders running a small session for all of our Year 8 students on bullying. Showing small clips on how to respond to bullies and who can help you if you or someone else is experiencing bullying at school or online. A free smart phone app ‘Take a Stand together’ was promoted during the session which has some fantastic advice and support options. At lunchtime our students stamped their pledge by drawing their handprints on two huge banners to demonstrate that we will take a stand together. Students who marked the banner received a free orange cupcake made by Mr Muzyka’s Year 8 Home Economics class – a big thank you to 8G17. Thank you to all involved in the day. HARMONY WEEK 2017 Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live. GGHS students reflected on this by participating in a range of activities in which they could celebrate cultural diversity. The message of Harmony Day is ‘Everyone Belongs’. On Monday 20 March we officially launched Harmony Week with a special ‘Acknowledgement to Country’ and we spoke about what belonging means and why it’s important to respect and appreciate people’s differences. To celebrate our diversity, Mr Rusby and Ms Carrington developed play lists of international and cultural music. Students sang and danced during the week and a few staff and students participated in an impromptu ‘Zorba’ in the quadrangle. There was aboriginal face painting on the oval and then we enjoyed a Colour Run on the oval, where students were covered in orange dust. All classes played a part in contributing to our Harmony Week. Thanks to Ms Hazebroek and Mr Muzyka who used our state of the art laser cutter to develop a World Map puzzle where each student was able to put their finger print on part of a map. We will be putting that puzzle together and displaying it in a prominent place in the school, where each year we can add to it. Acknowledgement must go to Student Voice who were instrumental in ensuring that there was something for everyone during our Harmony Week. Toni Carellas Kelly Hendeson & Shane Matei Deputy Principal Student Voice Leaders VISTA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONS 2017 Congratulations to all students who participated in the 2017 Vista Athletics Carnival. A fantastic result was achieved with Golden Grove High School being crowned Champions once again! Please see photos on this page. Stay tuned for the full write-up on both the Vista and SSSSA Athletics carnivals in the next newsletter! Matt Sharpe Sports Coordinator SPORTS DAY 2017 The annual school Sports Day was held on Friday 10 March and was very well supported with over 800 students attending the day. The weather was near perfect with a mix of cloud, bright sun and light winds. The House System has continued to be well received by staff and students and resulted in great colour and a fantastic atmosphere. The students approached their House areas to “Chariots of Fire”. The day was officially opened with the Welcome to Country, followed by a rousing cheer from the 800 plus students and staff. As the first events started, Gleeson oval was awash in a sea of blue, green, red and gold! Sports Day is the only “whole school” event on our school calendar and staff work hard to make the day as enjoyable as possible. The colourful costumes add to the excitement of the day. This year was no different with various superheroes, a range of “Onesies” and several celebrities! The climax is always the tug-of-war and relays and this year was no different. The standard of athletics competition was strong, with several new records being set on the day. The team games were also very well supported, with the tug-of-war grand finals being the highlight of this event and well led by Mr Stan Heeps. CRICKET ACHIEVEMENT I would like to acknowledge the support of all staff that contributed to the day and make FOR GGHS STUDENT special mention of the fantastic work undertaken by the 32 House Captains, both during House meetings and on the day itself. Golden Grove High School Year 10 student Zac, was recently selected The final placing for the House Shield was the closest we have ever experienced at to represent the state in cricket at Golden Grove High School. Our speaker for this topic was Joy Anasta. Joy, (Psychotherapist, Counsellor & Parent Coach) who has her own private practice working with children and their families, addressed an eager audience of over 85 community members including parents and teachers. Joy shared insights and strategies on how to handle some of the most challenging issues facing parents today, while building and maintaining a healthy relationship with our children. Joy’s main message throughout the evening was “Children flourish in an environment with structure and established boundaries, where agreement to ‘house rules’ (non- negotiables) is expected, in order for our children to reach their full potential”. Joy spent time ‘unpacking’ different parenting styles, prompting many of us to consider the impact these approaches may have on the behaviours and attitudes in our children. Joy also explored the new phenomenon of over-indulgence, the difference between what our children need and what they want to balance the teaching of compassion, love, patience and responsibility. Joy spoke further about including chores for children from as young as 3 years old so that they develop a resilience to give and receive. As is common practice in our forums, people from the audience were able to raise questions at the presentation providing an opportunity for specific parenting issues to be addressed. Following every presentation offered by the Golden Way Partnership Parenting forums, there is an opportunity for people to attend a follow up group. (Day/Night groups available.) This opportunity provides a ‘safe’ place for parents/caregivers to explore and consider ways to apply this parenting information into their day-to-day relationships with their families. Our next speaker at GGHS is Mark Le Messurier. The date and topic of this presentation is yet to be advised (Term 2 2017). If you were unable to attend Joy Anasta’s presentation but would like to be on the email list for further presentations or parent group involvement please contact Sandy Rawlings (GGHS) on 8282 6400. Congratulations to all our World Cup Scholars! Mrs Sue Lyons EXCEL Coordinator INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY “Educated girls are so transformative. Educated girls grow up to be educated women, educated mothers, and grow up to have educated children.” - Former Prime Minister, Julia Gillard (International Women’s Day Breakfast, Adelaide, 2017) Did you know that 130 million girls, globally, are unable to access education? 130 million! This year, the Adelaide International Women’s Day breakfast hosted over 2,700 people at the Adelaide Convention Centre; the largest single event for this day. Our own young leaders, Lana (Student Voice President) and Amber (Student Voice Representative) attended the event along with Ms Sarah Zwarts and Ms Kelly Henderson. Every year this event sees inspirational speakers and women of exceptional calibre address the audience to promote equality and celebrate International Women’s Day. This year saw Australia’s first female Prime Minister, Ms Julia Gillard as the key note speaker. Her now infamous misogyny speech even garnered a mention from host, SA Senator Penny Wong. Julie Gillard herself then discussed our responsibility in ensuring young women are able to access education both here and globally, where many girls are often unable to attend primary, let alone secondary school. One of the most prominent ideas to take away from the morning however, was to promote the importance of equality. And whilst we must remember to not just view the issue from the bottom still fighting upwards, we must also take time to stand on the mountain top and celebrate how far women’s rights and interests have come in developed nations such as Australia. In particular, the morning served as a beacon for our own young female leaders here at Golden Grove High School. Soroptimist International (Torrens branch) supports the event and generously donated two tickets for our young leaders to be able to attend; an act of generosity which Lana and Amber will certainly remember. Throughout the course of the morning our Golden Grove ambassadors were able to not only listen to powerful Australian leaders but also discuss with the women of Soroptimist International Torrens how times have changed. One even recounted how her only option after getting married was simply to “leave her profession.” The idea of a choice to continue her education or career was never even considered 50 years ago; how times have changed indeed. Yet, if there is one thing our girls learned on the morning, it’s that fighting for our girls’ rights to education, to excel and to lead isn’t necessarily to be at the cost of another. Rather, promoting equality in education is a way for us all to support each other, raise our standards higher and ensure that competition, collaboration and commitment lead to choice and transformation. PLP COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT As part of the PLP course in Year 10, students are required to undertake a community activity for 5 hours. On 30 March, two classes spent some of their class time planting seeds to grow trees. They have taken the seeds home and will look after them by watering them twice a day for two months. They will then return them to school and they will be planted in a variety of places. We hope they enjoy the experience and know they have made a contribution to the environment. Mimi Cavuoto Teacher, PLP YEAR 8 JAPANESE RECITAL COMPETITION On Monday 27 March four GGHS students entered the annual Year 8 Japanese Recital Competition presented by the Japanese Language Teachers’ Association of South Australia. Calvin, Enya, Jade and Jordan spent a lot of time preparing and did their best on the night. Participants were judged on pronunciation, fluency, intonation, presentation and memorisation. Well done to everyone involved and congratulations to Enya who was awarded third place. We are proud of you. Hayley Moat & Laura Carrington Teachers of Japanese GGHS 2 Volleyball Team YEAR 11 LUNCHTIME VOLLEYBALL COMPETITION Over the course of the term, two Year 11 Golden Grove High School and two Pedare Christian College volleyball teams have been doing battle in the Lunchtime Volleyball Championship, held in the Rec and Arts Centre every Wednesday. After some great matches throughout the term the two GGHS teams won their semi finals to then face off in the final against each other. The first set was all GGHS 2 taking it out 15/10 however the second set was a close battle going point for point until finally GGHS 2 were able to secure the set 19/17 and, hence, the Championship. Players who deserve a mention are Lachlan and Michael (pictured with the cup). The competition will run again in Term 2 with the Year 10’s having their turn. Interested players should speak with their PE teacher. PE Faculty STUDENT SUCCESS IN KARATE Year 11 student, Abbey, was recently selected to represent her state and club in Karate in the Nationals. Her first time attending competitions, Abbey was extremely nervous about the trip and matching it up against interstate competitors. Pushing through the worries of being prepared, Abbey’s rigorous training, hard work and dedication shone through. She achieved GOLD medals in Kumute/Combat Fighting and Karta Form Routine. This is a fantastic reward for the amount of time and discipline she has put towards her art. We look forward to Abbey’s future events and assured continuing progress in such a demanding sport. YEAR 11 MATHS EXPERIENCE Year 11 students studying Mathematical Methods participated in a program facilitated by University of South Australia (Mawson Lakes). This was a wonderful opportunity for the students to work together to problem solve as well as display their communication, creativity and teamwork skills. The students were also able to listen to the insights offered by a Mathematics graduate student who is currently working on her doctorate. Some comments from the students who attended: “The Year 11 Maths experience to the University of South Australia was an enjoyable experience. It allowed us to apply Mathematics to a real world situation. Our task was to bring back Sky Show, a fireworks show that ran from 1985 until 2006 in Bonython Park. We applied Mathematics to determine where and how the event would be run. This included determining a crowd size (of different age groups) and then finding a sizeable area (using Google maps) to seat the crowd. We then had to work out transport to the location (including if extra bus services were required) and finally cost the event. It was a long day, working in teams to problem solve and finally, presenting our report in a powerpoint to the others in the group. The tasks were met with enthusiasm. It was a wonderful experience and would have a lot of interest if it was to run again.” Branson, Mitchell and Phillipa Mali Naheswaran Leader, Mathematics Free parenting seminar Understanding the ‘boy code’
